Pursuit & Roll-Over Crash - CHP Chase Suspects L.A. to San Diego

- May 06, 2005 @ 4:45pm - Temecula and Oceanside Area CHP officers in hot pursuit of a white truck that was car-jacked at knifepoint. This chase originated in the Antelope Valley, came down from Lancaster, and crossed the length of Los Angeles. 100 miles later, it enters northern San Diego County with the truck riding on two of it's rims. San Bernardino Sheriff's Deputies initiated this pursuit, then California Highway Patrol officers took over. They were assisted by U.S. Border Patrol Officers.
One thing I've learned from listening to scanners and hearing first-hand how things actually went down, is how incorrect or incomplete media reports can be. If they can report this type of story incorrectly, then what about stories that are much more important than a chase on a local freeway?
And they deliberately lie and embellish about the facts
Too bad the truck didn't explode when it was rolling over like on TV, then you wouldn't have one running.

When i used to live in So Cal. I'll turn on my police scanners and turn down the TV audio. Almost like your there riding with the police.

It was apparent the suspect wasn't going too much further with only two tires on the vehicle. As with some others, I find it odd in how the media tends to exaggerate certain things like the number of times the truck rolled.

I'm sorry but there was never any follow-up to the story. I would only assume the ejected suspect died of his injuries because they were so severe, but I have no confirmation of that.

The pickup rolled a total of FOUR times and yet one of the announcers said it rolled "at least six or seven times"!
Happen to know how they got thatt truck out of there, dont think a tow truck would have cable(s) long enough to reach it from where it is, only other , is Helicopter, but dont think they would go as far as that to retreive a vehicle......
Most tow companies usually have at least one vehicle that's equipped for pulls like that, if not then they'll use a regular tow truck with several lengths of cable connected together.

Well, definitely can say they weren't quitters. How come the cops don't do anything? He's missing two wheels, not going very fast, there's no other traffic. Why not use that PIT maneuver the media are always drooling about. Seems the only times I see cops try that is in crowded residential areas.
The PIT was not as widely used when this incident took place as it is today. Additionally, policies surrounding the use of the PIT vary drastically across departments. In this case, the CHP guidelines do not permit the use of a PIT over 35 mph (just one of many considerations). Therefore, it was not an option in this pursuit.

The perp couldn't go that fast on rims, and he sure couldn't control the truck if he had been PITted. Oh, well, I suppose the cops know their business much better than I do. And why do these chuckleheads always try to run away on the freeways or in town? Ya can't escape there, cos ya can't outrun a radio signal.

Would you still call all cops pigs if they're chasing after a truck your wife and child are in? Call off the chase because you don't need them in your life? There are plenty of legitimate and understandable reasons why people don't like them, but many would turn hypocritical on a dime given the right situation.
