I have several Red Wing boots, including the Chelsea, and I have to say that they are on a whole different level. They are union made by hand and last forever because the leather is much thicker and they can be resoled in perpetuity. They are also extremely comfortable. I also think highly of the Birks, but the shape of the insole doesn’t work with my foot width. Currently, the Red Wings are only a bit more than Blundstones, and will last for decades rather than a year or two. The TPU soles of the Blundstones don’t last through extreme cold we have here…

You can actually resole the Blundstones. You just grind the old sole flat and cement a new Vibram or whatever on. My local cobbler had a contract with Berghaus who's boots have cup soles and that's what they do. Looks good as well
True. I did the same with my 8 years old Blundstone here in Italy - now they're not lightweight as they used to be, but they are still very comfy, warm, and good-looking. I suggest trying the Blundstone 550 Classic over the 500 Original - so much better for a few bucks more. Cheers!! Ciao
I've worn both Blundstone and Redbacks. If you have a high volume foot like high arches or just the top of your foot is high vertically, don't buy Redbacsk. It'll be extremely painful and it won't fit. Blundstones can accommodate big, high volume feet and are very comfy.

@@CeeAreDee id say the big bonuses with blundstones are that you can stand all day on hard surfaces with no foot pain, and you never have to worry about a wet foot. Ive used them for everything from entire days working on cars to standing at check in booths for 10+ hours straight. my feet have never hurt and have never been wet, even in downpours and snow.
What type 2 are you wearing? Been looking for a decent type 2 with hand warmer pockets... Also a couple of video ideas: 1. Top 5 best available Type 2's (could also do a type 3 video and just update each year🤔) 2. Top 5 white tees with a neck line that dosen't stretch like a rubber band after the first wash 😅 (I know you've already done this a few years ago but possible an updated list?)
I highly recommend Grant Stone boots. For just over $300 their moctoes and Chelseas are outstanding. Unbeatable craftsmanship. I’m not sure though if they can be purchased in Europe
I work as a builder, all of the people who work for our company wear Blundstones. They last really well, the sole lasts a really long time. They are great in the wet and cold. They are re-soleable. There are loads of places that resolve them. About £80 for the resole.
So, probably outside the direct premise of the video, but I got a pair of used r m Williams comfort craftsmans in my size in great condition, for a hundred twenty, I feel like used boots are a thing more people should talk about. Great way to get resole-able boots for a nice price.
I watched a video of the Birkenstocks cut in half to reveal not as much value as one might expect. Not to say that they're a bad boot but possibly somewhat overpriced. Unless the features appeal to you regardless of construction.
I’m very surprised by the Blundstone quality. I’ve been wearing the same pair almost everyday for about 2 years and the only thing wearing down is the foam insole. They’re very comfortable and work in all seasons… even wear em with shorts in the garden in the summer. I believe they are completely waterproof as well since I was just shovelling for a few hours in 40cm of snow and was still dry despite ice freezing on my jeans hem. The outsole is still in perfect condition. Recommend the rustic brown colour as it seems to age better
My Blunstones seem to last 3 or 4 years in fairly heavy rotation. I've completely worn out several pairs, and I can assure you they're not waterproof if submerged for any period of time, especially if you reach the stretch material on the sides. Unless they offer waterproof models I don't know about.
Good review. The only ‘defence’ I cab think of is that one should see the Birkenstock boots as fashion product, to be thrown away when a new model comes out.
Great video comparison. Really like that you give us some Euro knowledge as well despite America/Japan leading the whole hertiage fashion thing. I got super lucky getting some RM Williams on sale a few years ago so put then at about €300. I keep them as my "nice" boots though as you described your Vibergs. Also have the Blundstones and I love them. I use them in my garage workshop because they easy to dust off and surprisingly resistant to sparks, but they also became my go-to boot because they're just so damn comfortable and are still going after all the abuse I've put them though. Raining? Get the Blundstones. Travelling? Blundstones are wide and easy to slip on and off. Could be muddy/dusty/dirty? Get the Blundstones. I was looking at the Red Wings to replace them because I love chealseas, but I didn't pull the trigger yet because the Bluntstones are still so comfortable. I might have to get on it now if they're being discontinued, that colour is amazing!
Re: Ousourcing Blundstones made in "China" (Vietnam mostly I think, ut some in china) that was a cost saving measure when they stopped being made in Australia. Outsourcing for cost cutting and volume is always a bad sign! As an australian I wouldn't really trust Australian goods (RM Williams are fine but nothing compared to Trickers and other UK makers). Red Backs are pretty well regarded I guess. Probably the best 'Australian' brand is Thomas George collection - who simply commission and sell batches from Fugashin (a Vietnamese artisan shoe shop part of the thriving handmade shoemaking scene in SE asia - supporting your point that made in asian does not mean bad) Portugal is not always a 'good' sign - it has some of the cheapest labour in europe and underpays immigrant workers (though not to the extent of "Made in Italy" sweatshops). HOWEVER Birkenstock still make all their sandals in Germany which is not the most cost effective. Portugal has a lot more access to bootmaking machinery and is the largest producer of quality cork. So in this case it is probably as much a decision about quality and logistics.
The Redwing Classic Chelsea’s are so comfortable and tough looking. I stopped wearing all my other Redwings because I love them so much. I had to get all 3 colors.
good comparison. I bought a pair of the Blundstone Chelsea about a year ago. Very comfortable. Wore them all the time. Until a year later they look (not great) and the sole is worn out. Knew that going in but defn not worth it. Did however really like the Chelsea for the reasons you gave and have been wanting to pick up another pair (Redwing this time.)
I want to reiterate that the Birkenstocks are not goodyear welted. Once again Roseanvil did a video on it. Why didn't you look at Thursday chelsea Legend? Or if you go above your price point, Grant Stone?
Both the Thursday boots and the Grant stones are too similar to what I have. More on that “fancy” side of things. I’m looking for something a bit more beater.
Timing could not have been better for this video I have been looking for a pair of Chelsea style boots for a while now and this was very helpful. Happy Trails
If the redwings had the mini lug sole, and were leather lined, I would have a pair for sure. To me all the man made lining around the toe, and foot bed seems like a cost saver. Which, they are not passing on to the customer. It will put off some for sure. Oh and that sole wears quite quick, it did on my 875's. Gone in 18months.
The previous Red Wing Chelsea’s have a mini-lug (Red Wing Roccacia sole i think it’s called). It’s a leather outsole but with a mini lug half sole stitched on. I don’t have mine near me, but i think i recall it still has a canvas lining round the toe box/vamp area (which is similar to the iron rangers).
So, this is what I did......... I went to Red Wing. I ordered a 6" Chelsea women's boot, I wear a 9 or a 9.5 D so I ordered an 11 B (largest available and only width option) and preyed. They look like a blacksmith be it a little more pointy yet not as much as a cowboy boot. Fit like a glove, they do have the poron between the insole but the upper is traditionally built without synthetics. (people hate on synthetic parts but in a boot without laces you have to have some way of keeping the boot tight over time.) irregardless, my shoe options just opened up big time, as long as companies cater to women with size 11 feet!
I know you set a budget and their overall aesthetic might not be up your alley, but last year I was searching for a rugged Chelsea alternative to Blundstone and I couldn’t find RM Williams Gardener or Paraboot in my size….Ended up getting some waxed horse Chelsea’s from the Last Conspiracy. Might check them out because they go on sale a lot and are very well made
I cant find any review of ROSSI, also an Australian boot. Im most interested in their simpson boot, similar look to that of blundstone & redback, but this rugged chelsea has stitchdown construction so i think it can be resoled. It also looks sleeker because of the sole but has tread. Its a hybrid of their regular rugged chelsea and their “bushwalking” boots.
My two cents. I think the chelsea boot you might be looking for is a Canada West Romeo. Made in Canada, cheaper than Redwing, high quality, Goodyear welted boots.
Another two brands that worth checking out is Our Legacy and Lemaire. At the right sales season, they should be around the same price range. Plus they look really good.
Guess if I was going for a waterproof boot I’d get something a little higher. They can only be waterproof up to the elastic, no? I want something at least ankle height.
@@CeeAreDee i was a little surprised when watching the iron snail’s review of the boot and found out the elastic band is kinda waterproof as well, also I think it fits your tapered jeans very well. This got me thinking about what boot goes well with which cut of jeans
The Red Wing are the best of the bunch. But if I were you I’d have gotten the Chelsea Rancher with mini lug soles instead of the traction tred. I’ve owned my pair since 2014 and still going strong!
I cant stand those ugly crepe wedge soles. You saying I can get them with an actual heel and better tread? I'm gonna look them up now. I've been a Blundstone guy for years but I like my other Redwings and the fact their still made in the USA.
Great video! I was in the same place of having really nice lace up boots but trying to get twin babies in snowsuits and out the door AND put on my boots..no thanks. Had to go with some Chelseas. As much as I might hate to admit it but the new winterized blundstones are incredible. They’ve performed really well during a strong Canadian winter. Don’t have experience with those birks but although RWs are great that sole will have you slip and sliding on snow/ice.
Purchase the Red Wings, and a set of Birkenstock insoles. That way...once you wear the sole out on the Red Wings, you can have it re-soled on the cheap...and just slide your old Birkenstock insoles, into the newly re-soled Red Wings.
I think the future is in barefoot / zero drop shoes. Since they don't restrict our feet and fingers from moving the way the want to move. Currently in regular shoes the fingers are squashed and the for can't bend naturally. I've been reading a lot of very positive comments, people saying that transitioning from that shoes to barefoot / zero drop shoes made a big difference, their feet hurting much less and such. I am considering trying a pair of running shoes or boots like those, and I would suggest you try it too. And so you could compare them to these regular boots, and maybe make a video on it in the future.
Ooft. Honestly I think those things are the worst thing to happen in footwear in decades. They are terrible for the feet. Vibram lost a huge class action lawsuits a few years back when all their claims were shown to be false and they had to refund thousands of customers. I fell for the whole hype a few years back. And I tried. I really tried to get used to them. Did all the things that were recommended. Then the lawsuit news hit and they went in the bin.
@@CeeAreDee It's an interesting take on the subject. Although I do believe barefoot shoes are objectively better for the feet than the ones we use currently as shoes. The main thing I'm questioning about them is their disability (because if a shoe will die very quickly, that's definitely not good. But at the same time I'm thinking that depending on how quickly a barefoot shoe will die, who knows maybe it is still worth it to buy them even if more times, but if it's better for the feet, then it's ok). There are many brands, by the way. That one that you mentioned is just one of them. I'm researching this topic for the last few days, and, as I said, I read a lot of positive feedback on them, and the videos I find on them, I don't necessarily see some dum strange hipsters talking about them, but rather normal rational people seems to me, that seem as genuine in their opinions on them as one can be. I believe you just you never appreciated the idea enough to actually try and stick/transition to such shoes, so you just didn't bother and left the idea. But as I said, it's an interesting take, it's useful to me, since it will help me to be more skeptical about what the people say about them in their videos, to keep me alert and figuring out how genuine one is vs maybe one just tries to make money through affiliate links etc .
Need lightning. Showing all black/ dark Chelsea etc I need to rewind from the start to follow each your holding ( lol this , that , nice if you mention each brand every time you switched what your holding ) oh well. Overall. Cool. Thanks
Should've considered the Thursday Legend Chelsea Boot. Rugged and Resilient. Much better Materials than most boots, and much more stylish. Although less clunky, which much not be what you're looking for.
I bought two pairs of the Thursday Chelsea boot in multiple sizes, firstly they ran to long. Bought a half size smaller and they were so tight they were painful to wear with a very thin sock around the house. So disappointed because they were so stylist, had great leather but the fit was horrible! I can’t imagine what breaking them in would be like. Definitley made for more narrow feet
Moin, also du musst unbedingt mal ein Auge auf dei Schuhe von Meermin werfen. Die haben rahmengenähnte Stiefel für um und bei 200-240 Euro. I would consider the Red Wings if werent for the ugly crepe wedge sole. I've worn Blundstones for years and while not perfect, they are serviceable hiking boots. The tread and lack of heel tell me the Red Wings are not geared towards hikers. The beauty of my Blundstones is their versatilty.
I was looking at the Grant Stones but they are just a little too close to being ‘fancy’. Basically quite similar to my vibergs.
That’s true, they’re very sleek! They released a roughout version with lug soles some months ago
Take a look at Jim Green chelseas. Might also be up your alley for these purposes and even cheaper!
I work as a builder, all of the people who work for our company wear Blundstones. They last really well, the sole lasts a really long time. They are great in the wet and cold.
They are re-soleable. There are loads of places that resolve them. About £80 for the resole.
Love your videos. What model eyeglasses do you have on here?
So, probably outside the direct premise of the video, but I got a pair of used r m Williams comfort craftsmans in my size in great condition, for a hundred twenty, I feel like used boots are a thing more people should talk about. Great way to get resole-able boots for a nice price.
I watched a video of the Birkenstocks cut in half to reveal not as much value as one might expect. Not to say that they're a bad boot but possibly somewhat overpriced. Unless the features appeal to you regardless of construction.
Hello gringo, do the Red Wing boots fit more or less like the Allen Edmonds? Thank you
Red Wing Hawthorne Chelsea, look fantastic and are super comfortable!
I know they're a bit rugged, but Jim Green does a solid Chelsea.
I like my Danner Chelsea boots which were $170, very comfortable.
What were those first boots you were lacing up?
Viberg hikers. Nice boots. When they are on 😂
where did you find red wings for just 300 here in Germany? Because all I can see is 350
Was it just me or was the lighting a little dim? Couldn't really see the details of the boots on the 'across the table' shots.
Probably the best 'Australian' brand is Thomas George collection - who simply commission and sell batches from Fugashin (a Vietnamese artisan shoe shop part of the thriving handmade shoemaking scene in SE asia - supporting your point that made in asian does not mean bad)
Portugal is not always a 'good' sign - it has some of the cheapest labour in europe and underpays immigrant workers (though not to the extent of "Made in Italy" sweatshops). HOWEVER Birkenstock still make all their sandals in Germany which is not the most cost effective. Portugal has a lot more access to bootmaking machinery and is the largest producer of quality cork. So in this case it is probably as much a decision about quality and logistics.
Rossi and Baxter are making some great boots as well. It's not all bad in Australia
The Redwing Classic Chelsea’s are so comfortable and tough looking. I stopped wearing all my other Redwings because I love them so much. I had to get all 3 colors.
hi there, i live outside the USA and want to know if they fit similar to the moc toes?? what´s been your experience? thanks in advance
good comparison.
Ah ok. So they only lasted a year with you? Yeah. Seems a little short for that price.
Check out Sendra boots by the way. They're Spanish gooldyear welted boots with cork lined boots, shank, leather lining and so on.
The cowboy boots you see at the start, they are Sendra. Really nice pair of boots!
Any thoughts on Grant Stones chelsea boots? They would be within the price range you specified.
Look beautiful but they were a little too fancy for what I was looking for.
What model was the red wing
The previous versions were called Chelsea Ranchers. Mine are in the Briar Oil Slick leather.
Those crepe wedge soles are hideous, and impractical for what I need.
What pair of black ropers are at the start of the vid??!
where are those ropers with wedge soles from mate?
They’re from Viberg.
Redbacks is the way to go
So, this is what I did......... (people hate on synthetic parts but in a boot without laces you have to have some way of keeping the boot tight over time.) irregardless, my shoe options just opened up big time, as long as companies cater to women with size 11 feet!
lateral thinking and gutsy, I like it!
Looking for exactly the same 👌🏻😎
Wait a little longer. Got something in the work’s 😉
Really creative intro! Love it thank you keep it up :)
Thanks buddy. I appreciate it.
My two cents. I think the chelsea boot you might be looking for is a Canada West Romeo. Made in Canada, cheaper than Redwing, high quality, Goodyear welted boots.
Oh nice. Wish they were simpler to get over here in Europe.
Is his jacket too short or is this just the style now?
I’m just all torso
Blunstone comfort with Doc Marten soles would be the ultimate!
Another two brands that worth checking out is Our Legacy and Lemaire. At the right sales season, they should be around the same price range. Plus they look really good.
Thank you for the great video. I have a pair of Red Wing 875, are these RW Chelsea boots just as heavy and hard to break in?
I like the Birkenstock and red wings the most. I would keep both
Great video, would be great to have you compare our boots out one day💪
Drop me a mail at matt@ceearedee.com we’ll sort something out for sure.
Solovair also has chelsea boots
Yeah. I don’t know why. Totally forgot about them.
@@CeeAreDee oh well
Blondstones looks good, and it’s waterproof
Guess if I was going for a waterproof boot I’d get something a little higher. They can only be waterproof up to the elastic, no? I want something at least ankle height.
@@CeeAreDee i was a little surprised when watching the iron snail’s review of the boot and found out the elastic band is kinda waterproof as well, also I think it fits your tapered jeans very well. This got me thinking about what boot goes well with which cut of jeans
Another sweet video but I can’t help but stare at the Evisu S506XX style jacket, we need to see a video about that!
Good point. I think I say a little bit about it I’m my denim collection video. Maybe should go a little more in depth.
My fav boots and sandals.
Are?
@@CeeAreDee Blundstone chelsea, red wing chukka, birkenstock gizeh.
How can you leave out redback?
Great video! I was in the same place of having really nice lace up boots but trying to get twin babies in snowsuits and out the door AND put on my boots..no thanks. Had to go with some Chelseas. As much as I might hate to admit it but the new winterized blundstones are incredible. They’ve performed really well during a strong Canadian winter. Don’t have experience with those birks but although RWs are great that sole will have you slip and sliding on snow/ice.
Good video, thorough.
Thank you 😊
Purchase the Red Wings, and a set of Birkenstock insoles. That way...once you wear the sole out on the Red Wings, you can have it re-soled on the cheap...and just slide your old Birkenstock insoles, into the newly re-soled Red Wings.
You should watch Rose Anvil cutting Birkenstock boots in half. Fake welt and also the cork layer is just fake.
The only reason why I'm saying this, is because this video is great. Would be interesting to maybe hear your take on barefoot shoes in the future.
Ooft. Sorry if that sounded unfriendly. I’m just very against barefoot footwear
@@CeeAreDee
It's an interesting take on the subject.
Throw Danner and Jim Greens Chelseas in the mix.
There are other Australian alternatives to RM Williams which are cheaper and Goodyear welted. Check out the Rossi Kidman and the Baxter Goulburn.
I love my rustic Blundstone 585's.
Redback makes the best.
I bought Blundstone #491 for work in the automotive field and for the future when I get a bike. Hopefully I like them in person.
I think you did a great job of covering the features, but you need better lighting.
Yeah. Fixed that in future vids
Also etwas raffiniert. Ich suche ein Paar "robuste" Chelsea-Stiefel.
Good 👍 video
I got Rossi boots really made in 🇦🇺
And redback och Blundstone (winter series)
I am a person who are very interested and complicated when is regarding a shoes.
BUT I can promise you after I tried all those 3 fantastic boots my foot was perfect only in Blundstone ,,but I would clarify that I am talking about Blundstone winter ❄️ série
Cool vid… one suggestion tho… at the table not a big deal but for the on body clips your lighting is horrible lol like u can see the silhouette and thats about it! And yes yes i know… my brightness is turned all the way up. None the less as i said informative vid. 🍻
Yeah. That was a bit dark. Was going for moody. Ended up with creepy. 😂
I think the blundstone are more elegant and classier looking that the other pair you compaired with
True. The Jim greens are anything but elegant.
I can wear them to work in the building trades, on a hike and out on the town later. I need all three in a Chelsea.
I would have tried the Jim green.
My Boii used the word dandy. I’ma like the vid. 🎉
The Rossi’s have better soles than the Blundstone. You can resole both, seen it done.
Can't speak for the Birks but the Blundstones are a full grain chrome tanned leather. They're not a split.
You get what you pay for. My RM Williams have lasted for years on the mean streets of NYC.
Thinking of going for those if I can’t find the red wings.
red backs are the best. hands down.
Heard good things I’m just not a fan of the Syke.
Blundstones are definitely resoleable. My cobbler here in Tokyo has resoled mine twice.
You should check out something like Andres Sendra in that pricerange, plenty good alternatives that are Goodyear welted for €300
