  • Here are six places with spectacular autumn leaves in colorful Iwate Prefecture!
Because Iwate Prefecture is located in the northern part of the Tohoku region, the autumn leaves season begins slightly earlier, from early October to early November. When you see the majestic Mt. Iwate from Hachimantai, which straddles Akita Prefecture, or Takamatsu-no-ike Pond near Morioka, you will realize that you have come to Iwate Prefecture! Enjoy the autumn leaves viewing spots in the northern part of Iwate Prefecture, including Kuji Stream, which has been selected as one of the "100 best autumn leaves viewing spots in Japan!

    ■Hachimantai ( Late September to mid-October )
Hachimantai is a plateau volcano straddling Iwate and Akita Prefectures, and is one of the "100 greatest mountains in Japan".
The 27-km long "Hachimantai Aspite Line" has opened in Hachimantai, and visitors can enjoy a drive from the foot of the mountain to the summit area with spectacular views. The magnificent Mt. Iwate can be seen from many places along the Aspite Line. Mt. Iwate is the highest mountain in Iwate Prefecture, at 2,038 meters above sea level, and is one of Japan's 100 greatest mountains".
The 1,000-meter-high plateau on the Iwate side of the mountain is called "Gozaisho," and is home to hot springs, ski resorts, and other leisure activities. If you walk down the promenade from the back of Hachimantai Lodge, you will find Gozaisho Marsh, Gozaishonuma, Akanuma, and a rest pavilion.
■Basenkyo Gorge ( mid to late October )
Basenkyo is a gorge located in the northern part of Iwate Prefecture and is designated as a national "scenic beauty spot. The two giant rocks, Ogami-iwa and Megami-iwa, are the symbols of the Basenkyo Gorge, and are the largest couple of rocks in Japan. Behind Ogami-iwa is the "Basenkyo Observatory," which offers a magnificent view of the entire gorge.
    ■Kuji Keiryu ( Late October - Early November )
Kuji Keiryu (Kuji Stream) is a ravine and mountain stream located in northeastern Iwate Prefecture, and has been selected as one of the "100 best autumn leaves in Japan". The valley was formed by the erosion of the Kuji River, which originates in the Kitakami Mountains, and is a sight to behold with its precipitous cliffs, huge rocks, and oddly shaped rocks that approach the water's edge.
    ■Takamatsu Pond ( Late October - Early November )
Takamatsu Pond is a large pond located on the outskirts of Morioka City. Takamatsu Pond is also known for its magnificent view of Mt. Iwate, which rises 2,038 meters and is one of the "100 greatest mountains in Japan". On days when the wind is calm, Mt. Iwate can be seen reflected in the water.
■Morioka Castle Ruins Park ( Late October - Early November )
Morioka Castle Ruins Park, located in the center of Morioka City, was built on the site of Morioka Castle and is one of the "100 Best Castles in Japan".
The castle buildings were dismantled in the early Meiji period, but the stone walls built of granite still exist.
    ■Ishiwari-zakura ( Late October - Early November )
Ishiwari-zakura is a giant cherry tree located in the center of Morioka City. It is a rare cherry tree that grows out of a crack in a huge rock. Located on the grounds of Morioka District Court, the tree is approximately 360 years old and is designated as a "natural monument" by the Japanese government.
