It really depends on the weather I have found. I usually say around 4 weeks seems typical but this year my boy has been all over the place as we have had some monsoonal weather conditions. Make sure they are getting 12+ hours sleep a night and be careful of 'cuddles' that lead to mating behaviour. Also be sure to read body language when attempting to pick them up as it is the most likely time they will lunge and bite. If they display warning signs of bobbing head and hissing etc but you 'need' to move them, entice with a treat and distract. :) Good Luck! This stage requires patience. hahaa
@@plutoquaker thank you for getting back to me on this! Our weather here just started heating up in the eastern us. So this makes sense. I will follow your good advice!😊 I knew something was off cause he is usually so sweet and lovey! He just seems so irritated right now!!
yup they sure can get cranky with their cages. I do make a habit of putting my hand in and moving his toys around BUT one does have to read the body language before doing so! hahaa
do quakers go to the bottom of the cage and scream when hormonal ? i just got one a week ago and it goes to the bottom of the cage and does a fire alarm sound , the other day i seen him trying to hump a pill bottle ... i think my chicken is just hormonal but i been told bottom of cage is bad sign ? so im confused
Hi Andy, as I mentioned in my previous response. If I use any cleaning products that I think might be harmful to Pluto, I’ll typically place him in his cage outside for the day and allow house to air out. I don’t have recommendations on which products you could use. :)
How long does the hormonal stage last and how often per year? My Pickles is almost 2yrs old he does act like this sometimes but we have not been able to time it properly.
I would say typically twice a year and usually around 4 weeks with the peak crazies around the 2 week mark. Some days are definitely tougher than others where he can be such a turd that I end up putting my head phones in and escaping to another world. hahha
@@plutoquaker LoL! Wow, 4 weeks! That’s a long time. I bet you miss the camaraderie when you can’t play with him like usual. I’ve been carefully considering getting a bird for about a year now. That’s why I’m asking. I don’t know what kind of bird, I want to go to our avian rescue in the summer and see who I connect with. I’ve only had budgies in the past.
That’s a wonderful idea and I’m sure will be appreciated. Just be sure to understand their background and be prepared for learning about how to deal with any behavioural issues. E.g: they may have been given up due to screaming or biting. This can be overcome but will require patience. I recommend viewing ‘bird tricks’ on RUclips. They are amazing.
Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I don't speak English very well and maybe still mistakes. I have another question: at what age did he start speaking? I also have a quaker parrot,he is 5 months old and that is why I ask you. Thank you very much. By the way,Pluto is wonderful and adorable bird. 😍😍😍
Pluto had already begun saying hello when we got him from the breeder at 3 months. In their first year they spend a lot of time chattering and practicing words before they become clear to us. Just keep repeating words excitedly and they will pick it up. :)
My quaker, Pollie, flew away when I was 12 during that hormonal season (There were/are a lot of wild quaker parrots in Queens, NYC). Do you think it would help if you got Pluto a girlfriend?
Oh I’m so sorry your little munchkin flew away. Unfortunately getting Pluto a friend now would likely make things worse for him. He’s 16 years old and has been the centre of attention his whole life so bringing another bird into the house would likely cause more issues.
ah yes it is very diificult to change birds from a seed diet to another type of diet. I highly recommend taking a look at @birdtricks here on RUclips. They have a lot of amazing information on bird diets. :)
Just looking for information on hormonal Quaker! How long does this last? My Quaker just started this a few days ago

plutoquaker- Pluto's showing you who wears the feathers in this relationship, for want of a better choice of words, isn't he???...
Poor little lad! So funny how he goes 'Bye bye!' just to make sure you get the idea!
Haha yep he knows what bye bye is

You've done a great job with Pluto!! My quaker and I enjoy watching him🤭
Yep, my 2 are currently acting like this. The cat and dog are on the hit list too lol. Headphones definitely help!😂
😂😆🤣
I have a baby budgie and he feeds my finger
My bird gets the same way sometimes. Lol
plutoquaker- Pluto needs to keep it in his feathers, for want of a better choice of words...

Hi please can you tell me what we should use to. Cleaner your living room instead of furniture polish .thank you andy

please let me know where you got those chains! i got some but they’re tiny, do you know what size the links are? thanks
Hi Danika, I got them from my local hardware store. I’d say the links are about 3cm long.
Poor Pluto... Those horniness seem rough on the little guy!
they sure do upset the little guy. :(
@@plutoquaker How long do the hormonal phases typically last?
It can last 4 weeks and typically peaks around 2 weeks for us. Every bird is different though and it can also depend on the climate you live in.
how often does he get hormonal and how long does it last? how old was he when he started becoming hormonal?
About twice a year and can last 4 weeks with the peak around 2 weeks. It was a long time ago but I seem to remember it starting around age 2.

Can be 4-6 weeks, depending on the weather. :)

Good to see Pluto. How long is he usually hormonal for? Thanks.
It usually lasts about 4 weeks or so. Depends on the weather
Pluto doesn't fly? Did you cut his wings?
His wings were clipped when he was young and although he hasn’t had his wings clipped since he was two he rarely chooses to fly on his own. 😢

I use to feed my Quaker sunflower seeds for 6 years I change his food to some premium food for him and he won’t eat it
