Lake Goygol - the pearl of Azerbaijan

Lake Goygol in the Goygol National Reserve is known for its crystal clear water. Goygol, which means “Blue Lake”: it received this name for its crystal clear water. Located at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, it is surrounded by dense forests of the Lesser Caucasus and is recognized as one of the most beautiful lakes in Azerbaijan.
The history of the lake is also interesting: it was formed after a strong earthquake in 1139, which brought down huge stones from the top of Mount Kapaz into the gorge of the Akhsu River. Kapaz still majestically rises above the lake today, creating a stunning picture. The charm of Lake Goygol has inspired Azerbaijani artists, musicians and poets for centuries, including the great poet Nizami Ganjavi, who lived in this region in the 12th century.
