- ABOUT THE SCORE: A British period drama directed by "Gladiator" screenwriter William Nicholson, the story concerns a woman who agrees to bear the child of an anonymous English landowner in return for payment to resolve her father's debts. When the child is born, the woman gives up the child; years later, the woman is hired as a governess to a girl on a remote Sussex estate, whose father is the anonymous landowner. Drama ensues, and underrated British composer Christopher Gunning responds with a gorgeously bittersweet score rooted in the English pastoral tradition, chiefly invoked through Vaughn Williams-esque violin solos performed gorgeously by Mike De Saulles. For those who find themselves arrested by the tragic-yet-bucolic air of British scoring in this vein, "Firelight" is a must.
The painting is "February Fill Dyke" by english artist Benjamin Williams Leader (1881).
As usual, no copyright infringement is intended and I claim no ownership over anything herein.
Yes, exactly, I find myself totally arrested by the beauty of Sophie Marceau, this lovely music and such enchanting romantic film. The music perfectly completes the pictures.
I ask: 'Can you hear it?'
Again I ask: 'Can you hear it?'
For the last time I ask: 'Can you hear it?'
What do you hear?
Perfection!
This is the best song I love it so much. I can listen to it all day
Me too. Simply magical.
Me too I always get chills, the violin is so beautiful.
I have listened to it all day. It will haunt you in your dreams it’s so beautiful.
Simply Beautiful! He is right up there with other movie composer greats like John Williams, Ennis Morricone, and John Barry!
I adored this music during the movie. I think it's so emotional.
Blissful music from a lovely composer I was lucky to call a friend
Breathtakingly beautiful, evocative music that perfectly fits this beautiful film which is one of my very favorite films. Unforgettable.
So glad to have found this. Firelight is one of my favorite films and I’ve seen it several times. The soundtrack is so beautiful and haunting.
Amante sfegatata di cinema il film Firelight, interpretato magistralmente, trama che strappa il cuore dal petto e poi questa colonna sonora... Lo rende in assoluto il miglior film che abbia mai visto ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Magnifique ! Sublime ! J'adore.
Great stuff! Massively under-rated composer. Thanks for uploading.
Une œuvre magnifique pleine de délicatesse et de romantisme qui s'oppose à des climats plus sombres et inquiétants. A découvrir !
Oh my, thank you for posting this, I have searched for this soundtrack since I saw the movie. There have been times I have ached to hear the main theme.
First time I've heard this beautiful piece of music and it compliments the fine movie
too. At first I thought it was composed by Ennio Morricone, Have to admit I've not
heard of Christopher Gunning at all, all the same it made for very pleasant listening.
His score for a 1989 film "WHEN THE WHALES CAME" is also stunningly beautiful. He's a very gifted musician. I would encourage you to explore his filmography; he has also written many symphonies and concerti as well.
I thought it was Morricone too, but got all Gunning’s sound tracks when I discovered him!
This soundtrack and movie is exquisite!
It fills my heart and almost cry with the beauty of the sound.
Have listened to it for decades. Have the cd and movie.
@@dcensoni Yes I have to agree with you
that the soundtrack to "Firelight" is simply
exquisite, but I'd like to give a mention to
the fine acting performances of Sophie
Marceau & Stephen Dillane. Very seldom
do I watch period dramas mainly because
they only seem to portray the privileged
lives of the elite rich, however I am totally
in awe of the outstandingly French beauty
Sophie Marceau. I am mesmerised by her
face and of course her wonderful acting
ability here in this amazing film which I felt
had a controversial yet romantic story line
for that period in time. I'd say that would be
a popular means of summing-up this film
as well as it's directors brilliance in making it all worthwhile and supremely enchanting.
Christopher Gunning also composed the music for the BBC series POIROT.
Powerfully and classy
Egy gyönyörű film még gyönyörűbb zenéje
Qué delicadeza de musica!!! El mundo necesita tanto la sanación a través de la belleza!! Si tan sólo pudieran entenderlo los corazones duros!!
Muchas gracias!
Immensely emotional and powerful. So much variation and suttlety. Well crafted and composed. Hats off to Christopher Gunning.
Such beautiful music, thanks,,,,
It's a shame the CD is out of print. Thanks for the share, sounds wonderful.
The sound quality is exceptional. This is by far one of my favorite scores. I humbly thank you for sharing.
Wow - That's my Dad playing the violin Solo! I'd never heard this before- Thank You. I'd be really grateful if you could tell me how you know or any information that would help confirm that it was Mike De Saulles performing the solos??
Yes it’s him, he’s given credit in the drop down description under the video. What an amazing piece of music this is, I listen to it several times a week.
You tell your dad that i am driven to tears every time i hear it, it's that powerful, it's beautiful, be very proud of him.
You must be so proud of him.
If it is your dad, lucky you,I hope you have inherited some of his talent, something beautiful to be proud of,unlike what George W. Bush learnt from his old man.
I've listened to many versions. No way....your father is the best. He has golden fingers. You must and may be very proud. Thank you .
Thank you for good sound quality Bob …
10:14 when time stands still
merci de partager ce chef d'oeuvre, introuvable nul part
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for uploading.
Thank You, bobbengan. Please somebody upload Christopher Gunning's music for the film "Rogue Male" (1976).
I agree! "Rogue Male", having been made fot TV, is a seriously underated film starring Peter O'Toole. Gunning's score for this film has some of the loveliest music he's written, very redolent of the English countryside, pastoral. It's not available on CD, never has been.
Noted. Will add to our release plans. Svitlana Gunning
Beautiful movie! Now it becomes one of my favorites. The music with the violin solo in the movie is beautiful. I have been trying to search for the sheet music but not successful. Does anyone of you know where I can find it?
**DO U HAV, HANDS OF THE RIPPER? HAMMER FILMS** BY GUNNING.
Could you tell us where this recording is from? (CD details, etc) It's not from the soundtrack CD. I've searched via Google and cannot find this particular recording. Thank you!
There was an original CD Firelight many years ago. It has been deleted but we will be trying to rerelease it soon
I've never seen the film,it can sometimes ruin the music for me. The violin gets a bit lost in the swirl, still a great piece to listen to.
Painting anyone? Thanks!!
The painting is "February Fill Dyke" by english artist Benjamin Williams Leader (1881).
