This is one of the best examples of Roger's combined snare/hi hat technique. Until I got the 24 tracks for this and was able to listen to the isolated drums, i could never figure out for the life of me how he got such powerful snare sounds, and how he was able to differentiate the backbeats from the ghost notes so clearly. Genius at work.
Hello Canaveral305 ! No it's not double tracked, man. Roger, God bless him, is an old school drummer relying more on drumming techniques rather than technical equppment ;-) He's actually alternating between the bass drum and the snare to get this "double" effect, besides playing in a rather fast tempo. That''s it. Cheers!
@DiegusIcarus I don't think its just about technical ability, its also about how well a drummer can be imaginative and actually play to complement a song. I guarantee 99% of the so called drum experts commenting here could not nail this track without serious practice and creativity if Freddy and the band were ready to record in the studio. Its so easy sitting here making comments but get in the throne and show Queen what you got, thats where the talent is.
Wow. Roger is a very impressive drummer. I love this song (obviously!) and with the guitar and vocals so prominent, it's hard to hear just how great Roger was on drums!
He was very under-rated. Not for technique as he was a very good meat and potastoes drummer, but his cymbal playing. I also remember as a 8-9 year old listening to 'Live Killers' and looking at thsoe roto-toms and the sounds that he got from them. Just a solid, rooted drummer who never went beyond what he knew he could do. And that's a compliment.
I adore the drums in Brighton Rock... Actually, everything is perfect in that song, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals! Thanks for the upload, it's cool to see how one can follow along the song by just listening to the drums: it proves how crucial Roger was for Queen's sound and feel. Even someone who doesn't play drums (like me) can see that.
Yessss. What I love so much about it is. For me, I have to practice that fill every time before I want to play the song, but obviously these fills at 0:10 and 0:42 were literally just one take, in the moment, feel and groove type of fill. He just pulled it out of his ass because thats what the song felt like to him. And I love that because its such a weird fill but its so Roger, since it just came out of him improvised instead of practicing, going over it one more time before the take, trying and thinking ''what kind of fill do I want here''. He just did it. And it sounds absolutely sick.
Think it proves that the 'feel' of drumming is more important than ridiculous technique.Roger had technique in spades but his feel is what really makes it for me.The distinctive hi-hat opening on the back-beat etc. You'll see a million punks on youtube blasting out 300 double-bass beats per second but do you really want to listen to that? No? Roger got the balance of feel/technique spot on. And only used a single bass pedal till the 2005 tour. Getting old by then & probably helped the old legs!
Can you please do this with some other Queen songs? Roger Taylor is so underrated! Great King Rat, Keep Yourself Alive, Sweet Lady etc. are all great drum songs!
well that just blew me away......I knew the drums were epic on this track but when you hear them isolated , well what can I say.....fking amazeballs....
I have heard this over and over, and i think i will redo my cover of this (which i set as a response here, if you wanna hear) because, i now know exactly how the fills are. Sweeeet kind of crossed paraddidles in the first one, and beautifully placed cowbell on the second one. I HAVE to do that.
@Xcorgi I absolutely, totally, utterly, and completely agree with you, but Roger Taylor did say even he regarded John Henry as just simply better than anyone else. I should also say that Queen are one of my 3 favorite bands along with Zep (obviously!) and Deep Purple:-)))))))))))))))))))
Roger Taylor was a great drummer but even he admitted in the BBC documentary " I want to be in a rock and roll band" in the episode about drummers he said John "Bonzo" Bonham was the best. In Roger's own words he said John Bonham could do things no other drummer could do he was just simply better than everyone else:-))))))))))))
Man, I've been looking for the 24-track master of this EVERYWHERE and can't find it. I found Bohemian Rhapsody and Killer Queen, but this one's impossible to find.
Roger did use to be very much against double-bass as he saw it as "cheating" almost. He was a bit of a purist in that sense, which is strange when you consider that Keith Moon was one of his favourite drummers. On the 2005 tours onwards he did experiment with it and also chimes too. He's over 60 now so maybe it takes the burden off of the old legs too. Whatever Rog, love your style of drumming, keep going.
@maccagrabme I would reply your comment... but i honestly cannot remember what i wrote, haha. I swear!! This new YT comment page is so ..just wrong!! Isn't it? What i would be able to answer is that technique makes it soooo much easier to make your ideas true, in fact, along with technical growth come a whole bunch of ideas. If i can remember anything else, i will let you know, haha. Roger FTW
Some parts of the song (most of the guitar solo to be specific) have no drums so that's why they're removed from this version making it shorter that the actual version
TheRaakku ah thanks. Yeah I listened to the full track the other day and I noticed the super long guitar solo in the middle which I realised they probably cut out. Thanks tho
Taylor Mayed07: nitpicking would be the word I'd use there but there we go. Typical Queen fans really. Arguing amongst themselves. You know what I mean don't you?

what a great drummer
*best
absolutly one of the top 10 drummers of all time and along with nigel olsson and the late mick tucker the three most underrated drummers ever
Am I the only one who loves it when he brings in the ride cymbal? -> 0:20
no its absolutely beautiful. You are not alone.
0:44 the random cowbell :D
I love the sounding of Roger's drums. So meaningful Toms.
When you hear Brighton rock the first to notice is the crazy drum.

If someone ever asked me, "How is Roger Taylor one of the best drummers of all time?", I would show them this video.
@DiegusIcarus I don't think its just about technical ability, its also about how well a drummer can be imaginative and actually play to complement a song. Love the sound of his Ludwigs !!! Hit toms sound so huge and i love the hi hat work... just fantastic !!!
I can hear the vocals, guitar and bassline in my head! Brilliant, Roger!
I adore the drums in Brighton Rock... Actually, everything is perfect in that song, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals!

Damn 0:10 seconds in and that's like one of the coolest fills I've heard
its sooooo satisfying

True but I believe the Brighton Rock track was one where Roger gave John Bonham a run for his money!
Can you please do this with some other Queen songs? Roger Taylor is so underrated! Great King Rat, Keep Yourself Alive, Sweet Lady etc. are all great drum songs!

I absolutely, totally, utterly, and completely agree with you, but Roger Taylor did say even he regarded John Henry as just simply better than anyone else. I should also say that Queen are one of my 3 favorite bands along with Zep (obviously!) and Deep Purple:-)))))))))))))))))))
capt picard he was just being humble ))))

@raqa Rog uses fowuble bass drum in IWIA - not only video, but audio, but only in one fragment.
LOOOL.
Love the random cowbell around 0:42 .
Please make more DRUM-ONLY Queen song!!!
But roger was in a rock and roll band
0:19 LOL the best photo
드럼소리만 있는데 진짜 존나 멋있네...
Man, I've been looking for the 24-track master of this EVERYWHERE and can't find it. I found Bohemian Rhapsody and Killer Queen, but this one's impossible to find.
yeah, and some other songs on that album
I think I'm half of the views since 2008
wow this is great!!
isnt roger just fantastic?!
LOVE ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
sweeeeeeeet!!!

C de ouff !
Listen to the night comes down
Subtle but no less imoressive
@diamantinadavina And Mitch Mitchell too!
yeah the drums were great till i saw queen in his mini :X sick!!
raqa, Do more instruments, I wanna request a bass track for this one (and Radio Ga Ga if possible).
@newc1531 Point of the video with just drums: To see how skilled Roger is? Or do u mean the point of him recording just drums?
can you make another song please!??!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like death on time or princes of the universe or liar!!
akedem1: No, the double bass isn't even fast. It's probably the ghost notes on snare drum that confuse you and you mistake them for bass drum strokes.
Very John Bonham style
Two bass kicks.
Nope!
@maccagrabme I would reply your comment... but i honestly cannot remember what i wrote, haha. I swear!! This new YT comment page is so ..just wrong!! Isn't it?

Roger FTW
@Canaveral305 Roger only played with a single bass pedal. Double bass is shite.
in which songs in the return of the champions he played with double bass?
I want it all .the fast part
9.5
@TheYahara and One Vision and Now I'm Here
He played a double bass on I want it all i think
Zach Uminski It only appears in the video, but in the sound it soesn't appear a double bass pedal
In the fast parte he play double strokes with single pedal
OK, this might be me being stupid but Brighton Rock is 5:10 long and this is 3:33
Can someone explain this please. I'm probably just being dumb
Thanks tho
Ever recognized th BR guitar solo?
its also possible to heel and toe it.
a question to the video publisher:
did you edit the song?
if you did, can you do the same to "great king rat"??
1:59 I can hear John
hey same here an i too wanna be a drummer look roger =-)
Happy Birthday Roger Taylor
Good looking bloke, great on drums, was in Queen.. i really should hate this guy, i really should. but I love him. lol
then how the hell he played it??
only with the tom dreums??, ther's a part wich i really think it's double bass at 0:20.
toms from hell
ideš mali :-))
Taylor Mayed07: nitpicking would be the word I'd use there but there we go. Typical Queen fans really. Arguing amongst themselves. You know what I mean don't you?
did he use double bass??
No
No...if he use double bass...then how did rog use his hi hat technique?...
what is the point of just the drums????
are/were you stupid
is not real
If you think he's great, listen to Neil Peart. You'll have a rethink.
no i won't
Neil Peart is amazing, but Roger is still a great drummer. I'm pretty sure that Neil would share the same opinion.
It's not hard at all man...it's only two consecutive hits...i think you're hearing things that are not bass drums...
Rogers drumming has never impressed me.
Amazing!
