  • "The Invaders" is the definition of a classic Twilight Zone episode. It utilizes components of horror in combination with small-scale elements to give us a one of a kind story starring just a single actor on screen; the ending twist is one of the more memorable in the shows history, and several production pieces are among the most recognizable this series has ever produced. Yes, Douglas Heyes' last, and substantially better than his penultimate "Dust" episode. It's a fallacy that the robot creatures were too innocuously sized, they fought with the dark power of a zeppelin! That they lost in the end was how it was meant to be, and not due in any context to their size as opposed to their gigantic opponent, where Agnes Moorehead fought blood, sweat, tears, and excruciating ray gun burns in this, an elephant's stampeding fight to the finish! Jerry Goldsmith, the series' legendary composer, made his grand slam a final time, and is noted for the finest scores of the series; "Nightmare As a Child", and "Nervous Man In a Four Dollar Room". A classic triumph for Heyes, and Goldsmith. And we share this triumph as fans of the Zone.

Moorehead started in radio, joined Orson Welles' Mercury Players in 1937 and made her film debut in Citizen Kane. Extraordinary actress brought her full talent into focus for this Twilight Zone episode. Her portrayal of a woman being harassed by little spacemen is priceless. One of the best ironic endings of the series. Written by Richard Matheson, one of sixteen he wrote for the Zone.

If you take a one-way trip to the stars, but be careful where you land. You could wind up in... The Twilight Zone!
"The Invaders" is easily one of the most intense episodes of the series. On the first watch, it seems like an innocent old lady is trying to defend herself and her home form aliens that want to do her harm. However, in the end and upon rewatch, it's not what it seems.

This was one of those episodes where I accurately guessed the twist very early on.

This is one of those episodes that takes on a completely different context when you know the twist. Kind of like The Usual Suspects.

I've said I always applaud a Twilight Zone episode that does something different, and this takes the cake. At the very least, this was certainly is an achievement in acting. In a more macro scale, this is an unparalleled example of genre mixing: a sci-fi Slasher film! I didn't notice it at first, but it soon became apparent how unnerving it is that we didn't hear our protagonist speak; no sounds from her until about the 7 minute mark! I get why, any attempts at communication would've exposed the twist.
Still, I have issues. I consider the appearance of the "invaders" (their suit, not their height) to be cheating. We know what an astronaut's space suit look like, 1960s TV viewers knew what it looked like. Even in episodes set in the far future, like "Elegy," the design didn't deviate too much from the recognizable. So for this episode to create a being with such an alien look with the obese body, the rotating antenna, and the rebreather hose seemed deliberately deceptive. And for creatures that very clearly waddle as they move their squat bodies around, they sure take large, quick strides when not onscreen; the sound effect they picked for them running could've been chosen with more consideration.
Another issue is the lighting. I loved it, especially the chiaroscuro effect created with those pronounced shadows, but boy does that single candle really brighten a room. One other lighting problem: the upper rim of the saucer is clearly illuminated early on and nowhere is "US Air Force" printed on it; just a plain old continuity error that could've been rectified if they were more conscientious with how they framed the craft. Maybe attaching a little jetpack to their suit would've helped explain how they could traverse so much distance so fast.
Agnes Moorehead is a legendary actress and I salute her body work and expressions. Her silence is essential to the episode's twist, even if it doesn't exactly make sense. It's frustrating that neither she nor the invaders attempt to communicate with each other when that'd be a very natural thing to do (I know, I know... this is a commentary about the inherent bestial/barbaric nature of mankind that we assume the worst and attack first, ask questions later, blah, blah, blah). But even later when she's being attacked, she never screams. She pants, she moans, she makes noises, but never screams... even after being slashed. I kind of get Walter's point about her being an alien so her behavior is meant to seem different from our expectations, but even still that seemed stilted to me.
Lastly is Rod's introduction. With the revelation that the miniature men are Earthlings and the woman is a gigantic (by comparison) alien, it further seems like cheating to have Serling walk in during the intro and be her height. I can hear the reply, "but if he'd walked in tiny at the beginning, then it would've spoiled the twist." Then don't have him share a scene with her! This opens with a long shot with her house being seen in the distance. Have him appear there and then cut to the next shot of her in the kitchen. That way the perspective would be maintained.
All these gripes may sound like I disliked the episode, but I really loved it. It was tense, unnerving, and surprising. It's without a doubt unlike any other episode in the series, and I can admit that while still raising the issues I mentioned.

Didn’t regonized Agnes Moorhead in this even after seeing bewitched due to the fact she was not wearing makeup and outfit and hairdo I usually saw her in

I wonder if the Volus from Mass Effect were based around these designs, they're very similar looking.

The Twilight Zone was never in reruns on channels available to me, so I only watched episodes one or two at a time on occasion. This is one I've never seen.
