The main problem with the one tool concept is that it is often pushed by people who seem to have a vested interest in knife sales. People who often never leave their suburban back yards yet speak at great length on wilderness survival. Much better to have a slim sharp knife for knife stuff and a hatchet for all the walloping and brutality. Kudos for you for your honesty.

This is not a chopping knife it can also chop!It is a survival situation knife, it has to do the works of a cutting knife, chopping knife, carving knife etc........ So apart from its price!! the knife is perfect!!

Dude your video is right on point. D2 isn't what people think it is. So is some Damascus. This knife I don't believe should be carried by itself. I'd definitely still have a big chopper on me for sure.

Noticed that David now has a newer design out. Looks like a more conventional fixed blade knife. Similar to the Cold Steel SRK (which itself is a basic clip-point knife with a comfortable handle). And quite frankly, if I could only grab one knife to bug-out with or survive in the woods, yeah I'm grabbing my SRK or my Ka-bar/Becker BK7.... Another conventional clip-point knife with a comfortable handle.
I get it. David's design works best for him. And, it does have quite a lot to recommend it to others. But, it doesn't do fine cutting chores nearly as well as David claims. And, it is definitely not a replacement for a small axe/hatchet. For him to having said that it is, was just disingenuous. Before he started this project, David's channel was educational and even fun to tune into. His smile in every video was warm and felt genuine. Without David looking goofy. By the time he was done with this project, smile was gone and he clearly was just angry. Who knows, maybe because that first run of his knife didn't sell well. Too expensive. He did better when he later released the Primitive version at half the price of the original, which made it competitive with other survival knives on the market.

I saw the new model and am still considering purchasing it.
Really my only wish with the rollout of this msk1 was that his marketing was more honest- thats what did it for me.
He seems to be marketing the new knife MUCH better which i am glad to see.

Mato Luta Hi Mato! How’s it going? Please see my response to Jacob’s review. It’s the “rest of the story” and addresses Jacob’s 4 main issues: D2 Steel, Chopping, Fine Detail Work, Hollow Grind

  • @UltimateSurvivalTips
    @UltimateSurvivalTips 6 лет назад +70

Hi Jacob - this is David. Thank you for your review. However, I wish you would have contacted me prior to your post... you did quite a bit of character assignation here that I felt was inappropriate (see below). FOR "the OTHER Side of the Story" - I would like to briefly address and clarify the FOUR of your major points in your review: D2 Steel / Chopping / Hollow Grind of Knife and Fine Detail Work.
    1 - D2 STEEL
Metallurgy is a complicated science. You are not the first to bring concerns about D2 (or frankly many other steels) - as Knife Steel (in general) seems to be a hotly debated topic.
With regards to the MSK-1 and my final decision to use D2 - I consulted with Jeff Freeman on steel selection based on my VERY unique criteria did my due diligence / research and testing during the prototype process of over 2 years...
I wanted a tough, knife that retained its edge and returned easily to sharp in the field.
Through the process of testing Knife steels - I had come appreciate the properties and benefits of (properly heat-treated) D2 as per Jeff’s specs as I received in prototypes 3-5.
It would be a long, complicated and quite boring debate to get into the science of this. But the heat treat is key and makes all the difference In the world for any Blade steel, including MSK-1 D2.
In the end, when I decided on the steel, my experience (testing MSK-1) and consultation with Jeff (with his, training, experience and science) proved out that D2 was a great choice. Which I stand by.
As far as sharpening... did you happen to go to the MSK-1 user guide where I show you how to return your MKS-1s edge? If not, you really should check it out. It will
help you. Here’s the link: ultimatesurvivaltips.com/msk1-guide/
There are may helpful video tutorials on the page above. Let me know what if you think I need any additional ones.
But (in short) SHARPENING a properly used MSK-1 knife can usually be done without sharpening at all - by simply stropping. Beyond this, a few strokes on a ceramic rod usually does the trick.
Although I did use my MKS-1 Mini improperly once (driving the blade into nails) and damaged the Blade BAD. I restored the edge in the field in about 45 minutes.
As far as D2 strength, I have not heard of any broken MSK-1s, nor have I broken one.
Please have your friend contact me immediately so I can assess any issue with the knife and determine the cause. And SO I can place his knife if needed and honor my MSK-1 guarantee.
On a side note... I don’t know many knives beyond 1/4” thick. So my claim that the MSK-1 is - one of the thickest knives you can buy - stands.
    2 - CHOPPING
On Chopping... Two things of note... my story is true. I no longer carry a hatchet.. because the MSK-1 performs so well processing reasonably sized wood.
I believe your test could have been better. There was a significant height difference between when you chopped with the hatchet and the MSK-1. Having these at the same height would have been a better baseline. Generally there would be a disadvantage for the blade chopping material that is higher. Also... being further out on the limb chopping would lend itself to more vibration from the wood... and be a less stable platform.
Chopping a small tree, batoning wood, a more level test vs. the hatchet... I think you would have been more pleased with the results. There is a bit of technique to chopping with MSK-1 also. I could not tell from your video anything on technique. But I will be rolling out more tutorial videos this year.
I'm not saying the MSK-1 would have out performed the hatchet, but MKS-1 does serve as a good chopping tool. WAY better than you showed or gave it credit for... and makes is unnecessary to carry two tools IMO.
So - does MSK-1 replace / eliminate a need for a hatchet? In my opinion yes!
Is it better than every hatchet for every hatchetable task. Probably not. But for a one tool option, it’s WAY better than you showed.
Does MSK-1 replace and axe? No. This was a mistaken comment I made in an interview after a long day at a show. My bad. But I would NEVER carry an axe.
However I do carry a Silky Saw for larger and various camp tasks...
BUT - in a pinch - with only ONE tool, can MSK-1 perform a wide variety of slicing, cutting, chopping and baton tasks? YES.
But obviously other single tools may be better. If the MSK-1 was a hatchet. I'd be a hatchet. However in many situations it does chop like a hatchet. If that makes sense.
    3 - FINE DETAIL WORK
MSK-1 is not a carving knife. But it can do a surprisingly good job at tip carving and other fine detail work. The carved branch face you see in the MSK-1 video was done by me with only the MSK-1 in about an hour or so. It can work like a fine carving tool if you have some skill and keep it sharp.
    4 - HOLLOW GRIND
You must have an MSK-1 from our first production run. MSK-1 was NEVER Intended to have a Hollow Grind. This was done by our (now fired) original company who did that part of the grinding process.
NO MSK-1s beyond this original small first batch are hollow ground. Once we realized this - I got one in here for testing and found it to be just as reliable and capable as the previous prototypes... with the bonus of being a slightly better tool for fine work.
My challenge to your complaint is that it’s based on the pre-judgment of dynamics hollow grinds - not based on the capabilities or your experience with the MSK-1 Knife at least not in THIS video). In this case... because of the other aspects of the MSK-1 design - hollow grind just happens to work on the MSK-1.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of hollow grinds most of the time... but - for several reasons, it worked really well in the first production run so I went with it. However, the Hollow grind is gone forever on MSK-1.
So, You ACTUALLY have a collectors edition model... because there will NEVER be another Hollow Ground MSK-1 made. But, I’d gladly trade a new MSK-1 (from my next batch) for the one you have. And if you are REALLY dissatisfied with your MSK-1 I will gladly take it back and give you a full refund. MSK-1 is NOT for everyone. And I'm good with that. That's why there are THOUSANDS or knives to choose from.
Jacob, I hope this all helps. MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH YOUR REVIEW was the OPINION-BASED, subjective nature of the review and how you tied it to vilifying me and concluding that I was not telling the truth. You called me a liar bro!
You could have looked at the knife and choosing to share your OPINIONS of its performance and how it worked for you or NOT... This is COOL!
However, you chose to go after my integrity. This saddens me. And is NOT COOL!
I APPRECIATE YOUR PASSION... just maybe next time consider not assigning / judging motive or questioning character. This is always dangerous and usually leads to hurt.
Since you say you are a Christian, I would challenge you also to consider whether this is the way we as believers should approach others we critique in a public forum.
And is this sort of review model (where you defame the name of someone else) worth a few pats on the back and some views on RUclips? We all that to make these decisions.
Just know I am always here AND HAVE BEEN here, willing to speak with you (or anyone) if you have any questions, comments or concerns about what I do and say. I am probably one of the easiest folks to approach and work through issues you might have with me. I will certainly listen and say I am wrong when I am wrong.
Please do reach out and at least give me and (in the future) others - the opportunity at least share our story so that your information and / or perspective / understanding is balanced.
And please watch assigning motive without knowledge of a person. Reaping and sowing is a powerful thing.
You will have to choose for yourself what you want to reap and sow brother. Think about this.
Last thing... HERE ARE - MSK-1 STORIES - from MSK-1 users who have opinions contrary to yours: the-ultimate-all-purpose-knife-that-could-save-you.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders/project_updates#preorder-nav
LAST NOTE: I literally have had NO COMPLAINTS about MSK-1 until your video. Not a single one from hundreds and hundreds of users in the field. I have had a few suggestions on the Mini sheath and the handle strap. But as far as I know - I have 99.5% happy customers (you are the .5% percent).
MSK-1s are deployed all around the world and are performing well... even on battle fields.
    Thanks brother!
    -David

Ultimate Survival Tips , I don’t mean to speak for Jacob, but I doubt that he would have had an issue if this was a $100 knife.
Also, what you described in your first paragraph is exactly what is wrong with this community because it’s almost impossible to find a unbiased knife review on RUclips. That’s because people get paid or get free stuff to do reviews and if they have an issue, they contact the manufacturer instead of telling the truth. The end user suffers from this and legitimately can’t trust anyone who says “look how good this knife is” because they made a feather stick with it.
Jacob is giving his honest opinion on your knife, and I for one, am so very glad that someone finally is stating their honest opinion. Just because you don’t agree, doesn’t mean he did something wrong.
I am very curious as to how you arrived at the price point though. I’ve never seen a D2 production knife that costs $300. Especially when you can get a full custom CMP-S30 V for less.

Rockcastle Training Hi Justin. Thanks for the comment. And for reaching back.
My only concern is that what is said and done when it is attached personally to my character and reputation is done fairly and accurately. Jacob made some damaging assertions and implications in his video. He applied opinion that is inaccurate (or at least subjective) with regards to the materials used and performed a poorly executed chopping test of the knife. He implied that I made false claims (essentially calling me a liar) but never reached out
To me personally for clarity before publishing this. That’s all. He could have been even more balanced had he gotten my perspective. Now I need to respond... which I would not normally do.
On knife cost... Good question. It’s crazy expensive to manufacture the knife, custom milled bolts, handles and sheath components 100% in the USA. A quick trip to Blade Show will reset anyone’s perspective on quality knife cost. MSK-1 being a really great value as a very unique knife system. Hope this helps brother. Thanks for the questions...

So you can honestly say that you believe that knife is worth the money? Solely based on the knife quality and it’s “survival knife” features?
I just watched your video on this knife and it really sounds like a gimmick honestly. I don’t know you or your motives, but things just really don’t seem to add up.

    • @UltimateSurvivalTips
      @UltimateSurvivalTips 6 лет назад +5

Rockcastle Training :) It’s NOT worth the money to everyone bro. If it was $100 some people would still complain. Not everyone has $300+ dollars for a knife. I get that. But for those who want a great knife and can afford it... it’s certainly worth it and the claims are true. Dude it works. Jacob is one opinion.... here is a link to an update where you can read and see stories of others who have a different opinion than Jacob... the-ultimate-all-purpose-knife-that-could-save-you.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders/project_updates#preorder-nav

Ultimate Survival Tips, just looked at your page. I don’t watch much on RUclips, so I had no idea who you were. I get it, we all have to make a living and markup because of popularity is a real thing for sure. Capitalism at it’s finest, and I have no issue with that at all.
Again, I’m not trying to speak for Jacob in any way, but we have had multiple, in depth conversations about this stuff. I believe that there’s a moral responsibility in marketing. However, things are worth exactly what people will pay for them. So if you have people buying this for $300, then I guess it’s worth that.
I personally wouldn’t spend that kind of money on it, but that’s my prerogative. Way back when the TOPS tracker first came out, I had to have one. I purchased it and very quickly realized that it was basically a sharpened crow bar and almost completely worthless. I wish someone would have been honest and saved me some money. I believe that is the spirit of what Jacob is trying to accomplish in his videos.

    • @patbiggin644
      @patbiggin644 5 лет назад +2

@@jimmygrey6848 sorry, I didn't see this reply sooner. 80crv2 grinds pretty much like any other 80point carbon steel. Trick is it does not heat treat like 5160. It's very similar to 1080+ from years back but is it's own alloy with the vanadium added to it for grain refining and toughness. If you normalize it like 5160 you'll form carbide in the steel and burn up a shit ton of drill bits, normalize at your final heat being a dull red and it'll drill better. I still suggest carbide bits to save time though. 80crv2 needs soak times at your normalizing temps and also at your quench temp.

It looks like they came up with the better, cheaper, MSK1 Black and MSK1 Primitive, mainly from comments like yours and the community. In Dave’s defense, he does say, “If you had to pick one knife”. I wouldn’t, personally, choose a hatchet as my one and only tool forever, and some might. I’m buying the Primitive, first chance I get. Thanks for the video!

Skill set is where the real one tool option is at IMHO.I just think that if people really practiced & used axe/hatchets like they use to, they would understand that a knife just can’t do what a Axe/hatchet can do as efficiently. Then again I’m an AXE JUNKIE!!!😁

I agreed with you on most counts, however, I would not want a longer knife. the versatility of the knife is awesome, however, the scrape pummel should not include a fero-rod striker. it is awkward to use in this location and subtracts from the pummel in a very unnecessary way.

I was in shock! Well the center of gravity is perfect! Thecenter of pressure is perfect! The balance is perfect! The grip is fantastic! The choir is largely a greater grip then most knives have!!! It's 154 cm steel ! Razor sharp! The survival kit is No gimmick! The stuff will work and save your butt! The finish is unbelievable!
Sheath is a work of art! Double edge makes awesome arrowhead look! And is deadly ! The sedation/ saw is great! Very very strong!
The knife was indeed very well thought out! I paid 340 bucks I'd gladly pay 500 and no I'm no rich ! I have a few hundred knifes in my life time
This thing is really phenomenal! Jumping is great and plenty of it! I believe the micarta is canvas is a little course great grip !
The bow screw looks perfect the Chicago screw are great this guy left no stone un turned! Honest! And it is beautiful to look at and hold!
The ferro rod cut is fine no problems! Non look its not a axe ok but it can chop great! You need to go to position 2 move way back on the grip to get real good leverage
The blades mass is dead center! It batons great and man for very fine work it's great!
I dont know this guy and the pommel crusher is jimped too ! and can to nasty nasty stuff ! Look I didn't like the guy either lol ok!
I never dreamed it was so good. Bottom line the man did his research this idea a long time! And it shows!

Good review. I like people that are honest about what they see. I agree about 2 things the steel D2 in general pain to sharpen I hate knifes that are hard to sharpen because you can never keep them sharp as you like. It just take way to much time. Second hollow grind on a thick knife is just bad news because when you split wood it is not helping at all. High saber or full flat grind will be ideal. About chopping it is simple physics that a short knife can't really chop because there is no mechanical advantage.

"Best" is super subjective, especially when a price point isnt given. For production knives that i can afford, the best bang for the buck is a mora companion, because its $8. My favorite 2 bushcraft knives are the esee pr4 and the casstrom sfk. My favorite mini bushcraft knife is an esee cr2.5, and my favorite edc bushcraft knife is an esee jg3. @@coltonbenirschke7944 no, for the quality vs price i dont think this blade in better steel is a good option.
So in wisconsin fire prep could be a huge, brutal deal- and freezing temps can be HARD on a blade.
A thick edge will be tough, but wont cut as well as a thinner blade, and will feel duller than it actually is much more quickly.
So, with that being said, here is my recommendation without knowing too much or asking a ton more questions-
#1- mora kansbol- this isnt your survival blade, but its a good blade to practice with at about $30. If in the process of practicing you ruin it... oh well. The experience you had gained in ruining the knife is WELL worth the price, and if you dont ruin it, its still a DANG good knife!
#2- a silky saw- up in wisconsin a good saw can save your life. If you havent practiced much with a pocket saw (only using pressure on the draw stroke) get an extra blade. These are REALLY good saws.
#3- the survival knife itself- This is the hardest one, your budget concept is a good one. I would probably save up and order a good 6-8" bladed, 3/16"- 1/4" custom knife in 1080, 1084, 80crv2, or 8670 from Bear Forest Knives, Papa Bear Knives, or Dry Creek Forge. I am guessing the expected price would be somewhere around $300, which is MUCH better a price and value than that might sounds.
Other steel options i would consider would be aebl, cpm3v, carpenter cd1, and ztuff. All these custom makers make a beef cake blade with PRACTICAL edge geometry with a great heat treat at a great price- these guys USE knives and sell TOOLS, not just pretty things with gimmicks. Most could offer you a model that they think best suited to your budget, taste, and use.
As for an axe i would recommend any axe from council tools premium line in the size that you need. They have everything from tiny belt hatchets to bigger swinging axes, and everything in their premium line is amazing.

I'm fine with my knives. My favorite is my SXB, but even if it is a proven survival knife, I think it's foolish to believe in a one tool option. I don't get lost or survive out in the woods, but when my family and I go camping, we go on state land and pretty deep in the woods, for a real, relaxing, and nature enjoying experience. That said, most areas only have so much dead fall and even some of it sucks for firewood, there is a lot of wood processing required to have enough wood for a week, especially if one is winter camping. I'm not stupid enough to rely on just a knife or one tool, I'm willing to carry the extra weight in tools if needed if it means I can harvest the resources I need or makes the job that much easier. The whole survival thing, especially the knives, it's been marketed so heavily, it's sick, lol.
I know the limitations on my SXB, and thus I still carry as at least a hawk, but to say this knife could be a one tool option? foolish. The steel? Price? Size? I'm sorry but it's all ridiculous! I'd much rather get a Bark River, preferably something from dark Timber, and buy my "survival" stuff from Walmart and I would have a bigger, better materials and geometry, more capable, and more gear cheaper than what these knives with its survival kits are going for.

Just wondering if you've done a review of the Tops Tom brown tracker, I like the concept and idea of the Tracker being a heavy knife that's capable of a variety of uses , because over the years in the UK , Europe and Philippines I've used a variety of knives made from different materials but all of the same sort of shape and design , some capable and some about as much use as a chocolate fire guard , the only two I wish I still had was my Cold steel SRK and my Bolo made by a local Blacksmith in the Philippines from an old leaf spring.

I had at one point, but it was deleted at some point.
I dont think the design is well executed by Tops, and i dont like the tracker design anyways because i dont like a primary edge that is broken.

I've been waiting for more reviews over his own. It's been almost a year but should be getting mine in another week or two. Can't wait.

dfcvda "best" is incredibly subjective. But any carbon or simple stainless should be fine. I have a "choosing a survival knife for beginners" that you might want to check out.

Thanks for the honest review it is a nice knife with some great ideas really high price range but if you can afford it why not I have a pretty extensive knife collection and my most expensive knife is around $111. Great knife though. Me personally a knife could never replace a great Hatchet
