@@SkittlesInYourHand Whats confusing though is based on dark souls 3 it seems like we have a decent understanding of how the world ends up, and there isnt really a place he could have come from in all that time. @@lenkagamine4145 i mean the implication in ds3 is that by the time of the events of the game, a borderline countless number of 'worlds' have risen and fallen. It's not at all hard to imagine that at some point in between ds1 and ds3, in some far forgotten past, the culture of the ds world developed to a point which reflected Chester's aesthetic. Then inevitably the flame linking cycle had to be repeated and that civilization was lost to ancient history, like countless others.
@@HeavyMetalMonk888 Maybe, but none really demonstrate much in terms of technological progression, everything we see largely sticks to the 'medieval' aesthetic. Theres a reason that Chester stands out so much more than relics of other lands, after all. He doesn't look like he fits in with all the other kingdoms that rise and fall in the dark souls world.
Another oddly interesting thing about Chester is that in April 2012 FROMSOFTWARE showed an early build of the DLC behind closed doors, they showed Oolacile gameplay with two characters, one had full Artorias gear, the other one was a full Chester cosplay, armor set, crossbow and...Four pronged Plow. Not too look to much into it, I just find it funny, you can still find the character datas in the DS1 Debug Menu. It really has nothing to do with Chester's design, it's more of a funny fact.
@@jarrarwinks8470 A Yharnamite on the night of the hunt? Much simpler to think that they were showing off new dlc equipment and the plow is dlc stuff, also not very easy to do a gameplay presentation with no melee options, especially in dark souls 1.

The 'thematic sense' is shoehorned in, in my opinion. The game could have easily been more unique, instead of re-using many of the themes and locations from DS1.
you didnt mention a very important thing, the sniper's crossbow specifically mentions its from carim. its unlikely chester just found it, and he seems extremely well trained with it. he also fits the creepy vibe of carim. i think he's from carim in a distant future, most likely during the age of dark. this is why he's also so nonchalant about trying to steal your humanity, it just becomes a normality in his era.
I like to think that they use a design philosophy in which there will be one standout character who is (to the player character) just some other person inhabiting their world. Thinking of the full clad knight in Sekiro and the hunter with the eastern referenced garb in bloodborne. Each lending to a future title in Elden Ring and Sekiro respectively.
Wow, that is actually a really interesting theory. Dark souls 1 has Chester, Bloodborne has Yamamura, and Sekiro has the armoured knight. Only exceptions to this rule is Dark souls 2 and 3, but seeing as their continuations of the dark souls games it could be said these standout NPC's are more so references towards future IP's, not just future titles
@@RenegadeShepard69 Given the absolute mountain of cash that Elden Ring has made, I can't imagine that they're going to pursue anything other than a direct sequel to it anytime soon. If they do toss in a cute reference to an in-dev project then they'd probably do it in a DLC.
I definitely agree that the original design of Chester calls back a lot more towards Demons Souls. It makes me curious as to what specific decisions were made at From to switch to his "Bloodborne"esque design.
Originally in early development bloodeborne was supposed to be connected to demon souls, or be a direct sequel, as one of the voice lines that were cut from the game says "umbasa" also with bloodeborne continuing demon souls locecrafts influence
@@timelessdust3001 Yeah I do remember hearing about that, I believe it was Father Gascoigne who had that line. Well, in my own headcanon at least, I consider the 2 games as sharing a universe, with the Old One being the original Great One on the Earth.
An interesting implication, at the time of the first game at least, was that no matter if the Chosen Undead chose to link the flame or not, the world would still go on. Chester is from a future where people still exist, and culture went on.
Its because the fire will extinguish no matter what. In fact, in ds3 we never truly sacrificed ourselves to the fire. We were marely ashes and its impossible to be fuel for it. This means that if bloodborne is the same universe but in the future, it means the fire already has extinguished
Alternatively, Chester could be wrong, seeing the swords and sorcery as being the past when we might actually be after Yharnam. It seems incredibly likely that the first flame is the core of the great old one, and that the lord souls are what the player dropped off in DeS. Bloodborne was supposed to be a sequel to DeS at one point, so maybe the hunter helps to consolidate more souls in the form of blood echoes, and is eventually able to deposit them alongside the demon souls. Maybe other games will allow us to gather light and death in some way to create four powerful souls... And thus, Chester was in fact, pulled to the future...
I find it interesting that his finalized redesign shares many details with his original design, except that the colors are more muted and some of the decorations on his clothing and hat are missing, leaving an impression where you can tell they were supposed to go. It's almost like they're worn out from age. I do think that the other details of his redesign might have connections to Bloodborne, especially since Bloodborne itself seems to have been based on the earlier aristocratic/Victorianesque NPCs that went unused in Demon's Souls. To me it looks like From's development process is just as intricately interwoven as the settings of their games.
Chester is probably the only NPC I’ve deliberately murdered for their armor set. …DUDE HIS SET HAS A TOP HAT, TRENCH COAT AND MANIACALLY GRINNING MASK, WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO??
What about his moveset? It's one of the most unique movesets in DS1, almost feeling unrealistic/fighting game-y than the grimly practical (or at best believably fantastical) movesets of most of the DS1 weapons (excluding boss weapons and dragon weapons and the like, most weapons do not have fancy animations but still are quite effective in combat).
I’d like to add that most weapon animations in dark souls do have exaggerated, innefficient movements (too much wind-up, too much follow-through, too slow etc.). But I think your point does still stand - DS movesets mostly just reflect how someone with little training would use said weapons (with exception to many boss weapons just being crazy)
Wow! Now THIS was eye-opening. I too used to share the simple mindset that Chester was a simple easter egg for the upcoming Bloodborne. But your video enlightens me to a much more complex reality that I would've completely ignored! Thank you so much for this kind of content, Zullie! I imagine it must be tough as nails digging out all these secrets and then creating this fun but complex presentation for us viewers. All I can say is thank you for your hard work and the amazing and even educational content that you share with us!
The fact he's based off cut content from Demon's Souls and not Bloodborne itself, just shows just how far back in time the concept of BB was looming over Miyazaki's head.
Chester doesn't really match any other style, and I'm sure that's on purpose. They went to great pains to make him seem as out of place as possible without making it obvious where he's actually meant to be from.
Which becomes rather annoying in DS2 and DS3 when this is never revisted ever again. Like what, are we supposed to believe that somehow I between DS1 and DS2, or DS2 and DS3, à Victorian styled civilization sprung out of nowhere then disappeared without leaving any traces at all ? Like seriously, why not at least alter civilian clothing in that direction ? Heck, I'd say even Beatrice had an outfit that looked a bit like his, which I never see anyone reference weirdly enough, so why not have more people like them ?

Fun fact: The corpse with the Wolf Ring in Dark Souls 1 is in the same spot Marvellous Chester stands in Oolacile during the Artorias of the Abyss DLC. One of Ciaran's cut lines of dialogue has her remark upon the player's possession of the Wolf Ring, stating that it had been stolen by a man in a long coat - asking that the player relinquish it for Artorias' grave, much like his soul. One of the reasons they might have removed the line is because of how Demon's Souls and Dark Souls' quest systems usually worked out: players would often stumble on a request (implied or stated,) or accidentally fulfill conditions. Things like saving Ostrava in Demon's Souls or following through on Siegmeyer's story are very incidental and easy to miss if a player missed a step - or didn't realise there WERE steps. It stands to reason that even if a player has the ring already, they might think there's an implicit quest that involves killing Chester on Ciaran's behalf - or, on a technical level assume they could get another Wolf Ring from him, what with the time-travel aspect. This means killing the only merchant in Oolacile, and the devs likely decided it wasn't a good idea to compel players to do so.
The mini art book that came with the pre-order of Dark Souls included artwork of both Chester and the Sanctuary guardian, but I can't remember how closely his final design matched the concept art. By the time I played the DLC I had forgotten about him, so it was a surprise to see characters I had seen before my first time in Oolacile
It's incredibly poetic that Chester is suitably displaced in time in both his visuals, and in his design inspirations/sources. You can tell Victorian-era stylization was on Miyazaki's mind, it's not a wonder he would spearhead Bloodborne just years later. Bloodborne is definitely my favorite game of all time, likely to be eclipsed by Elden Ring when it launches, but ultimately, FROM has a distinct style that comes from the evolution of its titles. Bloodborne likely would not have existed had the others before it not come to fruition. Every game is important in their canon, and while I heavily dislike Demon's Souls, I still respect it as a title of great influence and genesis to the series.

With how much he sticks out, I think it's more to sell the scope of Manus' grasp. Able to reach so far into space and time that he's pulled something entirely different, someone who looks and behaves so differently. The added reference to Bloodborne was probably a happy coincidence on From's part, one that they wholeheartedly took advantage of. Considering it seems like there was a good deal planned for the DLC that never made the cut, (Artorias' dialogue giving a good indication to it) I wonder if Chester had more of a role than just being an exposition dump for the DLC's story. All in all, it seems like a lot of effort went into him just for him to lore-kake all over you and be a one-time invader, even if his outfit is cool.
I don't know if it's intentional but Chester and Old Hunter Yamamura fit a theme of DLC foreshadowing new IPs. MC was grabbed by a giant hand and pulled through a portal (fits in Dark Souls and Bloodborne). Yamamura chased a red eyed beast from an Eastern land into Yharnam, which could also fit in Sekiro or Bloodborne.
@@noatrope we'll have to wait for the full game, I reckon. I doubt it, though, since the other two are dlc characters and Sekiro didn't have DLC. I've seen people suggest maybe the knight on the temple bridge, but I think if there is anyone the rat assassins are more likely.

He truly is the most marvelous character ever.
Looks like someone who would fit perfectly into Bloodborne
I would have like to see him in a unique area of the Dreg Heap in DS3 only for his story to end with a portal to the past like some kind of reverse Samurai Jack.
If only he was MAJESTIC Chester
He probably has the most majestic face under that marvelous mask of his
There’s a theory on that, someone said the dark hand that grabbed him was amygdala, not Manus. He also wears a top hat similar to the one found on the body in cathedral ward where you get grabbed for the dlc
Ohhh marvelous! A hunter is a hunter, even in Lordran.
Chester has always enthralled me as a character, from his mysterious past to his mysterious future. I've always wanted a solid explanation from Miyazaki or someone from the design team. Doubt it will ever happen, but the prospect of never knowing the true story of his origin will always infuriate me. Thanks for the extra info though Zullie, have not clicked on a Souls video so fast in a while.
I imagine they just added a rando dude from a different time period to fit with the funky time displacement shenanigans of the dlc
@@SkittlesInYourHand Whats confusing though is based on dark souls 3 it seems like we have a decent understanding of how the world ends up, and there isnt really a place he could have come from in all that time. How did this victorian-esque land come to be? is he from after the age of dark, or did that realm somehow just slip in between the games without any mention?
The way he speaks is also completely different from any other NPC. I wonder if this distinct speech pattern is replicated in other languages?
Another oddly interesting thing about Chester is that in April 2012 FROMSOFTWARE showed an early build of the DLC behind closed doors, they showed Oolacile gameplay with two characters, one had full Artorias gear, the other one was a full Chester cosplay, armor set, crossbow and...Four pronged Plow.
Not too look to much into it, I just find it funny, you can still find the character datas in the DS1 Debug Menu.
It really has nothing to do with Chester's design, it's more of a funny fact.
Four pronged plow also matches Bloodborne. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!!!
@@jarrarwinks8470 A Yharnamite on the night of the hunt?
Much simpler to think that they were showing off new dlc equipment and the plow is dlc stuff, also not very easy to do a gameplay presentation with no melee options, especially in dark souls 1.

@@kayqueelson1761 all the “fanservice” serves a narrative purpose. They’re not just out-of-place references for the sake of it, and they actually make a lot of thematic sense, so I don’t see the problem

If that is the case I wonder who'll be that standout NPC in Elden Ring.
@@RenegadeShepard69 Given the absolute mountain of cash that Elden Ring has made, I can't imagine that they're going to pursue anything other than a direct sequel to it anytime soon. If they do toss in a cute reference to an in-dev project then they'd probably do it in a DLC.

@@RenegadeShepard69 almost seems like it's not an npc, but one of the pc options that's the standout- Samurai from the Land of Reeds.
@@bigenemy000 I'd say it's either the DS1 dark ending, or the painted world of blood.
@@bigenemy000 We are the vessel for the Lord Souls so we can _become_ fuel.
That melee variant looks like it may have been Chester's hollow state at one point. Like he was driven mad and decided to just outright kill you irl
Amazing chester ahead
I wish BB had a set similar to his that had a description say "This garb was worn by a truly marvellous individual"
Chester is probably the only NPC I’ve deliberately murdered for their armor set.
…DUDE HIS SET HAS A TOP HAT, TRENCH COAT AND MANIACALLY GRINNING MASK, WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO??
I am right there with ya on that.
The first time I interacted with him I knew what I had to do, and I would always wear Chester's garb forever more.
I killed Gough for his armor set. By throwing poo at him until he died. That I bought from him.
Same bro, i use his chest piece with giants helm and leggings!

Chester doesn't really match any other style, and I'm sure that's on purpose. They went to great pains to make him seem as out of place as possible without making it obvious where he's actually meant to be from.
Which becomes rather annoying in DS2 and DS3 when this is never revisted ever again.
Like what, are we supposed to believe that somehow I between DS1 and DS2, or DS2 and DS3, à Victorian styled civilization sprung out of nowhere then disappeared without leaving any traces at all ?

your bg music choice is phenomenal, i keep finding new samples to toy around with. thanks for that!
Chester is from the alternate timeline where Demon's Souls became a commercial success and spanned it's own sequels
That prototype chester wouldnt be out of place as a set for bloodborne. Shame they didnt even tried to make a similar one.

By the time I played the DLC I had forgotten about him, so it was a surprise to see characters I had seen before my first time in Oolacile
so basically the Batman Who Laughs but without his violent and sadistic tendencies......to some degree
You always manage to find the most fitting music for your videos. Well done honestly.
I haven't played Demons Souls, what's not to like?
Personally hollow knight is my favorite game followed by the soulsborne series. Blood borne is definitely the best of those games but I prefer ds1 just because it was my first game but totally expect elden ring to surpass it
@@kevinbeck8836 It's clearly the first game of it's type. The Souls gameplay is there but the Souls approach to level design isn't. It feels like a Dark Souls clone in that regard. It's a fine game but it doesn't have that magic "something", and Dark Souls does.
@@kevinbeck8836 It's all personal preference. The game has plenty of merits to stand on, and I do not think less of it. I love its lore, I love its artistic direction and design, I just simply don't enjoy playing it as much as I do Bloodborne or Dark Souls III.

It's hard not to see Chester as a foreshadowing of Bloodborne and in the same way Old Hunter Yamamura as a foreshadowing of Sekiro, even if that's not actually what they are meant to be. It's convenient which makes it tempting to believe.

That Swoosh around them at 2:00 was great!
Marvelous Chester is just Chester Bloodborne famous protagonist of the Bloodborne game.
Chester joins the hunt
That final line, about him being more from past and future games, rather than the one he's in is super dope.
Wait, he throws roses?! Then he's not a Bloodborne foreshadow. He's a Tuxedo Mask reference.
All i know is he sells the green stuff.🚬
I don't know if it's intentional but Chester and Old Hunter Yamamura fit a theme of DLC foreshadowing new IPs. MC was grabbed by a giant hand and pulled through a portal (fits in Dark Souls and Bloodborne). Yamamura chased a red eyed beast from an Eastern land into Yharnam, which could also fit in Sekiro or Bloodborne.
