Builder here. I don't wear eye protection much, but I definitely do when taking ceramic tiles off the wall. A small piece of ceramic could cause a lot of problems in your eye holeeeeee

Personally I would have kept a very slim small window over the toilet. I would not want a bathroom without a window for light and ventilation. You would have had space over the toilet. My parents just did the same for their bathroom they put a wide shower on the back wall where the window was but left a very narrow window over the toilet.
Good luck with this project - you are both good at this! I have to say that if it was me, I would have bricked two-thirds of the bathroom window and put in a small vertical opening window, with clear glass. Natural light, ventilation and a view of what’s going to be a fabulous garden as you head in for a shower in the morning. Maybe it’s not too late…

Personally I would go with grey grout as if you go for white then it can dirty easily and you would have to clean more. I just recently renovated our bathroom in our house and was advised by that. Also love watching your videos for inspiration.
Think really carefully about getting your cavity walls filled with insulation. I’m renovating a 1930s house- and have the same issue- had contractors quote no problem- but then had a damp consultant to advise and said unless the cavities are 100% clear of rubble, it can cause damp. So I’ve opted for insulating from the inside instead!

Dark grout 100%. I put white in my kitchen and I am steaming it every week to keep it clean. I second the comment around eye protection, a tiny little fragment can cause a lot of damage. What are you doing air vent wise in the bathroom now you have blocked off the window?

Cavity insulation is more or less a thing of the past(atleast in the way you'd have it done for these walls). The insulation ends up "bridging" the damp course(sucking moisture through from outside) and getting stuck in the cavity with nowhere to go, so you end up with it leaching through and damp and mould on your internal walls.
Exactly what happened to the house I bought a few months ago and we are getting the insulation removed in the next couple of months hoping we can get rid of damp issues. The insulation was pumped in 20 years ago and removing few bricks we saw how much damage it has done.
The floor tiles & vanity look gorgeous. I can't wait for next weeks episode. Having a beautiful bathroom to shower in at the end of every hard-working day will help you get through this renovation. I must admit, I was feeling itchy watching all those bugs & dirt getting vacuumed in the kitchen. Great job of cleaning that up Nicky. Brilliant video. Take care ❤x

Ventilation? Defo rat mice if your cupboards have gaps they will come back once food is put in we had them get in from the garage Now we have moved we had kitchen cupboards completely enclosed somthing to think over x
Think you said about rendering at some point, if thats correct then look at external wall insulation instead, if done right there's less risk of causing issues down the line than cavity wall and not as much limitation on thickness.
My morning smile when seeing you have uploaded. Use bleach product in that kitchen to clean what you cannot see - like Weils disease, etc. Shredded paper is rats making nests. Go around and fill where you think the rats have been getting in as they will return, moreso when there is something to eat in there. Use wire wool to plug the holes and expandable foam - rats and mice dont like either of them and it puts them off. Dark grout. Read up on insulation in cavity as it has caused big problems in a lot of houses. Sick house I think the Americans call it - we still haven't caught on to this over here. If you ever fancy doing a mid-week upload, I won't complain ;)

@@NickyandHarri They hate the wire wool on their whiskers and there is something in expandable foam they dont like, so wont chew through it (used to work in pest control and this is what they used )
Keep marching on guys, looks to be a great project. Done all of our downstairs, now working up the stairs.... Bath replacement this weekend with some plumbing, then tiling to do (I hate tiling). Then over to en-suite for a complete refresh with new shower etc, then when that is done back to finish the bathroom basin, toilet etc. Juggling so either room can be used whilst one is in progress. Chaos!! I don't envy your big project, but I do get inspired and I love doing DIY myself, so keep on with it no matter what challenges you face on the way!
The paper is where mice are busy making a bed. I have renovated countless properties and currently building 4 newbuilds so if you have any questions on your current scheme feel free to shout - all the best
I do find it kind of bonkers that you've removed the window in a bathroom, all that work and you're now going to have to install an extractor fan to do the job the window was doing. You could've just put the shower as you walk in on the left. I assume it's because the extension will be the other side of that window long term?(may have missed this part)

No problem with bricking up the bathroom window, but I don't like seeing grey brick where there was red brick before. I really love brick exteriors, so something to revisit when you get round to that extension next Spring/Summer I guess. But yeah, not surprised about the lack of insulation. Gotta love all these old houses not bothering to insulate. Who needs insulation when you have forever-cheap, plentiful gas! Uh oh! 😅
Heyyy 👋🏻👋🏻 we are rendering the whole of the outside of the house, which is why why used blocks 🤣 we would never leave it looking so dodgey!! Yeh the insulation is a bummer, but kind of expected, hey 🤣
I hope those floor tiles are none slip for getting out of the shower. Grey grout to hide the dirt. Grout also makes a floor less slippery, so smaller tiles would have been better. Yeah, that was a mouse nest - invest in a cat. Not sure how much of the work I'm going to do in my latest house, but I need to re-open the door to the lounge, block off entrance to dining/family/kitchen area, re-open original kitchen door, block off the dining door, convert the conservatory to an extension (if foundations deep enough), remove end of kitchen and install downstairs loo with utility area (venting it will be challenging but not impossible), move the loo upstairs to a less restricted area of the bathroom, sort out the wiring (have one switch on the fuse box labelled "?" and some light switches that do nothing, and change 4 windows to ensure that there are fire escape size openings. In 2 minds to remove chimney, as that would involve next door. Front needs repointing in areas, and drive relaid. Possibly build a porch after changing the ugly, trip hazard front door.
Wow- sounds like you have a hell of a lot of work on your hands, good luck with all of that- take it one step at a time! We’ll be installing a bathroom rated extractor fan into the bathroom to give it adequate ventilation! 😅👍🏻
100% grey grout. I’ve just had a windowless bathroom done and went for white/grey and the grey grout looks great and I’m so happy I did it. Advice the plumber gave me too when I was on the fence (especially with the floor) white grout shows certain misses 😂
We've just got an offer excepted on our first home and very much a fixer upper! Advise on living in the house as you do it up, do we start at the top and work down? We will be moving the downstairs family bathroom upstairs to make room for a longer galley kitchen downstairs. Is it best to start with that from upstairs to downstairs? If it were me I wouldn’t look at it as upstairs & downstairs, prioritise rooms you are going to use first & leave the rooms you don’t use much until last. Like Nicky & Harri here doing a bathroom first as they know that will be used every day.
When bonding out a bricked up window like that, invest in a feather edge(6 foot is generally enough for most walls). Slap on more bonding than required, thicker than the existing wall, as quickly as possible, don't worry AT ALL about being neat. That's where the feather edge comes in, you rule off the excess bonding bringing it flush with the existing walls around the window. Take's less than half the time and gets a much better job. No more fiddling about trying to fill little misses, get it perfectly flat etc, just fill whatever the feather edge "misses"(should be nothing if you did step 1 - "more than required" properly). Also - there's a product called "extra time" which gives you much more working time with gypsum based plasters (there's also "half time" which drys it quicker). Added benefit - you'll use your straight edge loads in the future, cutting plasterboard etc. Faithful is the one i've had for about 15 years.
Overnight Oats easy to make ( 2/3 days batch) and as a breakfast keeps you easily full all morning! Great Vlog and great to see the progress best of luck with it all.
Guys invest in an SDS drill - watching Nikki use that hammer drill to drill those wallplugs was painful(as i've been there hundreds of times and know what she's going through). An SDS drill would drill each hole in less than a second and take 1% the amount of effort to do so.
That looks like mouse droppings to me and the little bits of paper are probably where the little fella has been chewing it up to make a nest. I would pull all the drawers out and take the kick boards off the base units and check underneath just to make sure he's not there, otherwise you will only be cleaning up after him again. Great to see Nicky the Bricky is back!! I didn't comment last week and meant to say I would keep the silver birch tree, BUT have it cut right back. We have fresh white bathrooms and have white grout which looks stunning. I think grey grout looks office-y. People have been mentioning that they get dirty, but not if you clean your bathroom thoroughly at least once a week, which you're supposed to do, right? I don't want to hide dirt and bacteria - I need to see it to make sure it's clean! I love the style of bathroom you've chosen, and can't wait to see your progress next week. xxxx
Great start to the renovation guys! I’d definitely go with white grout to keep the room nice and light but I’d use epoxy grout as it doesn’t discolour like traditional grout. Also I’d consider getting an SDS drill, it will make light work of drilling holes. Looking forward to the next one!
Love the videos and enjoying following along the new renovation so far. Just as a heads up for next time I know you've meant well at 12:50 by putting the wall ties in joining the inner and outer leafs but what you've actually done is bridged the cavity which isn't ideal as they have the potential to transfer moisture from the outside in (i know they are only very small and they won't cause any real issues). But you're supposed to use what are called cavity wall ties, which are designed to minimise this from happening by letting the water run off them before reaching the inner leaf. They're also easier and cheaper to install as you just lay them in the mortar beds across both skins of brickwork 👍
The bits of paper in the kitchen are the rats ripping stuff up oh and btw you might be able to get council tax deferred(free) for the renovation period as it’s not livable usually the just send a guy round to check your doing what you say your doing although it’s different rules in certain areas 🤷♂️🤷♂️

We managed to get full cavity insulation on our house for free (British Gas I think). Energy companies need to meet eco targets and often offer free or subsidised insulation. Might still exist???!
Cute little bathroom set up. Always a bit of a minging job taking out the old. We’re going to look at Easy bathrooms in Birmingham for our en-suite and fam bathroom set up. Love that sink top. At least you put it in the garage…… always makes me smile 🥴 for some reason seeing an old toilet sitting outside a Reno for months on end. Good to see the brickies back on site. ❤️👍 Could you get a grant for the insulation? Always worth a look on the local authority grant. You guys wouldn’t qualify under any other scheme I could think of. Or even try Great British Insulation scheme (GBIS). Just a thought.

As others commented, light grout always gets dirty... bane of my life in the kitchen and bathroom. I will never use white grout for anything now. Just from my experience.
I believe the little bits of paper ripped up are mouse 'nests', the mice create those little piles to lay down and have babies in. No joke. EDIT: I see others have advised the same. I have similar in my prospective house - doesn't hurt to get an exterminator in (and a large cat). Also, another vote for grey grout!

Found issues..floor was rotten so we ended up laying new floor. have ro say the shower is great. i would use a dark grout for the tiles, so it stands out.Cant wait for next weeks episode...loved the bugs and shite...Not..🤮. take care ❤x

Huh, i have quite similar looking tiles in the bathroom, except, what you put on the floor i have on the walls and the other grey-ish tile i have on the floor (slightly darker) And i would suggest grey grout, since black stands out too much and eventually white will be dirtier than grey or it wont look as good atleast
The paper is almost certainly rodent nesting. Those externally beaded windows need to be declared on your home insurance and if you don't plan on changing them, you can always beef us security by removing the glass and reinstalling with security tape. One last point is to remember to tell the guys doing cavity wall insulation that that bricked up area has a sealed cavity, they will have to drill a hole in that area and fill it up.
In your next bathroom i can highly recommend wall panels rather than tile (wet wall panels and ceiling was where we got ours from) So easy to keep clean as only need squeegeeing down, cheaper and less time to put up too. Had them two years now and have been great. An extractor fan too if not having a window. Loving in the projects. Take care x x

Work as an engineer but we struggle with rats at our work defo been rats in kitchen , good idea would be to remove and chuck the kick boards then they don’t have anywhere to hide if still lingering about somewhere

Are you planning to replace the one pipe system to a 2 pipe system? I also have the same issue and the central heating system takes ages to heat up but worried it is costly to do. Is it a DIY job because I just got my boiler replaced

Buy a cement mixer that was painful seeing you mix in a bucket, that way you can gauge the amounts correctly, or a mixing tray cheap from screwfix
Top tip for your next project always start at the top and work your way out the house, much less mess and dust etc that way

Loving the progress! I met with our architect this week - loads of good ideas and hoping seeing yours come to life will spur us on to do more ourselves. Keep it up guys!
No problem with bricking up the bathroom window, but I don't like seeing grey brick where there was red brick before. I really love brick exteriors, so something to revisit when you get round to that extension next Spring/Summer I guess.
But yeah, not surprised about the lack of insulation. Gotta love all these old houses not bothering to insulate. Who needs insulation when you have forever-cheap, plentiful gas! Uh oh! 😅
Heyyy 👋🏻👋🏻 we are rendering the whole of the outside of the house, which is why why used blocks 🤣 we would never leave it looking so dodgey!! Yeh the insulation is a bummer, but kind of expected, hey 🤣

I hope those floor tiles are none slip for getting out of the shower. Grey grout to hide the dirt. Grout also makes a floor less slippery, so smaller tiles would have been better. Yeah, that was a mouse nest - invest in a cat.
Not sure how much of the work I'm going to do in my latest house, but I need to re-open the door to the lounge, block off entrance to dining/family/kitchen area, re-open original kitchen door, block off the dining door, convert the conservatory to an extension (if foundations deep enough), remove end of kitchen and install downstairs loo with utility area (venting it will be challenging but not impossible), move the loo upstairs to a less restricted area of the bathroom, sort out the wiring (have one switch on the fuse box labelled "?" and some light switches that do nothing, and change 4 windows to ensure that there are fire escape size openings. In 2 minds to remove chimney, as that would involve next door. Front needs repointing in areas, and drive relaid. Possibly build a porch after changing the ugly, trip hazard front door.
Wow- sounds like you have a hell of a lot of work on your hands, good luck with all of that- take it one step at a time! We’ll be installing a bathroom rated extractor fan into the bathroom to give it adequate ventilation! 😅👍🏻

100% grey grout. I’ve just had a windowless bathroom done and went for white/grey and the grey grout looks great and I’m so happy I did it. Advice the plumber gave me too when I was on the fence (especially with the floor) white grout shows certain misses 😂

We've just got an offer excepted on our first home and very much a fixer upper! Advise on living in the house as you do it up, do we start at the top and work down? We will be moving the downstairs family bathroom upstairs to make room for a longer galley kitchen downstairs. Is it best to start with that from upstairs to downstairs? Also as winter is approaching fast any advice on winder renos?? many thanks! Love your channel G & J
If it were me I wouldn’t look at it as upstairs & downstairs, prioritise rooms you are going to use first & leave the rooms you don’t use much until last.

Grey grout. Black is too much of a contrast and white just gets dirty straight away.

When bonding out a bricked up window like that, invest in a feather edge(6 foot is generally enough for most walls). Slap on more bonding than required, thicker than the existing wall, as quickly as possible, don't worry AT ALL about being neat. That's where the feather edge comes in, you rule off the excess bonding bringing it flush with the existing walls around the window.
Take's less than half the time and gets a much better job.
No more fiddling about trying to fill little misses, get it perfectly flat etc, just fill whatever the feather edge "misses"(should be nothing if you did step 1 - "more than required" properly).
Also - there's a product called "extra time" which gives you much more working time with gypsum based plasters (there's also "half time" which drys it quicker).
Added benefit - you'll use your straight edge loads in the future, cutting plasterboard etc. Faithful is the one i've had for about 15 years.

Guys invest in an SDS drill - watching Nikki use that hammer drill to drill those wallplugs was painful(as i've been there hundreds of times and know what she's going through). An SDS drill would drill each hole in less than a second and take 1% the amount of effort to do so.
That looks like mouse droppings to me and the little bits of paper are probably where the little fella has been chewing it up to make a nest. I would pull all the drawers out and take the kick boards off the base units and check underneath just to make sure he's not there, otherwise you will only be cleaning up after him again. So glaaaaad these weekly videos are back. That last video was superb. Great pace, amazing editing etc. I can't believe how much you've done in such a short space of time - you both work so hard. Great to see Nicky the Bricky is back!! I didn't comment last week and meant to say I would keep the silver birch tree, BUT have it cut right back. We have fresh white bathrooms and have white grout which looks stunning. I think grey grout looks office-y. People have been mentioning that they get dirty, but not if you clean your bathroom thoroughly at least once a week, which you're supposed to do, right? I don't want to hide dirt and bacteria - I need to see it to make sure it's clean! I love the style of bathroom you've chosen, and can't wait to see your progress next week. xxxx

I’d definitely go with white grout to keep the room nice and light but I’d use epoxy grout as it doesn’t discolour like traditional grout.
Also I’d consider getting an SDS drill, it will make light work of drilling holes.

Love the videos and enjoying following along the new renovation so far. Just as a heads up for next time I know you've meant well at 12:50 by putting the wall ties in joining the inner and outer leafs but what you've actually done is bridged the cavity which isn't ideal as they have the potential to transfer moisture from the outside in (i know they are only very small and they won't cause any real issues). But you're supposed to use what are called cavity wall ties, which are designed to minimise this from happening by letting the water run off them before reaching the inner leaf. They're also easier and cheaper to install as you just lay them in the mortar beds across both skins of brickwork 👍

The bits of paper in the kitchen are the rats ripping stuff up oh and btw you might be able to get council tax deferred(free) for the renovation period as it’s not livable usually the just send a guy round to check your doing what you say your doing although it’s different rules in certain areas 🤷♂️🤷♂️

We managed to get full cavity insulation on our house for free (British Gas I think). Energy companies need to meet eco targets and often offer free or subsidised insulation. Might still exist???!

Always worth a look on the local authority grant. You guys wouldn’t qualify under any other scheme I could think of. Or even try Great British Insulation scheme (GBIS). Just a thought.

As others commented, light grout always gets dirty... bane of my life in the kitchen and bathroom. I will never use white grout for anything now. Just from my experience.

I believe the little bits of paper ripped up are mouse 'nests', the mice create those little piles to lay down and have babies in. No joke. EDIT: I see others have advised the same. I have similar in my prospective house - doesn't hurt to get an exterminator in (and a large cat). Also, another vote for grey grout!

Great video as always guys. I have just helped my plumber fit a shower where the bath was. Found issues..floor was rotten so we ended up laying new floor. have ro say the shower is great. i would use a dark grout for the tiles, so it stands out.Cant wait for next weeks episode...loved the bugs and shite...Not..🤮. take care ❤x

Huh, i have quite similar looking tiles in the bathroom, except, what you put on the floor i have on the walls and the other grey-ish tile i have on the floor (slightly darker)
And i would suggest grey grout, since black stands out too much and eventually white will be dirtier than grey or it wont look as good atleast

The paper is almost certainly rodent nesting. Those externally beaded windows need to be declared on your home insurance and if you don't plan on changing them, you can always beef us security by removing the glass and reinstalling with security tape.
One last point is to remember to tell the guys doing cavity wall insulation that that bricked up area has a sealed cavity, they will have to drill a hole in that area and fill it up.

In your next bathroom i can highly recommend wall panels rather than tile (wet wall panels and ceiling was where we got ours from) So easy to keep clean as only need squeegeeing down, cheaper and less time to put up too. Had them two years now and have been great. An extractor fan too if not having a window. Loving in the projects. Take care x x

Work as an engineer but we struggle with rats at our work defo been rats in kitchen , good idea would be to remove and chuck the kick boards then they don’t have anywhere to hide if still lingering about somewhere

The shredded paper is the mice making nests hence the extra droppings. Worth throwing a few blocks of poison around to get on top of them. Also bleach everything as they pee everywhere to. Had mice everywhere in my renovation to, even had poo on shelves halfway up a wall how they got up I dont knos 😂

Are you planning to replace the one pipe system to a 2 pipe system? I also have the same issue and the central heating system takes ages to heat up but worried it is costly to do. Is it a DIY job because I just got my boiler replaced
