I'm from Massachusetts, and at the time during the eclipse i was residing in an area within a couple miles of both Vermont & NY state, right in the corner. We drove up in the night & it was a very VERY LONG, difficult kind of drive and a lot worse coming back but it was spooky as sin, kind of scary in certain spots as it was dark out and my New Yorker friend who drove isn't very familiar with upper state either. We sadly saw villages and towns to which even in the dark you could see looked so severely improverished & abandoned but in strange, bizarre, almost disturbing kind of way, these downtowns looked like they were out of Hollywood old western movie sets. I was pretty shocked and couldn't believe the things i saw. It's beyond criminal NYC is given all the tax revenue and it's in your face that NY state is robbed & left to rot literally!!!! While we were getting deeper into our few hour trip to Plattsburgh, there were several areas of shocking poverty but in the spooky rural outskirts i looked over and thought I'd seen a ghost, through the corner of my eye i thought i saw a horse & wagon!! I thought i was having delusions as we were both pulling all nighters and very exhausted to see the eclipse. I believed id seen a real ghost or hallucinating. It wasn't until later into the trip and reaching more farmlands, that we both spotted a big white ir creamish colored horse, very large breed, clopping towards us and a man with a hat looking down. This was at 3-5:30 am or so. Then we knew i hadn't seen a ghost, there are amish people there but i never knew they inhabited NY really. It was an extremely scary experience seeing the first one with dark horse through the corner of my eye and fast, but the second one confirmed this was real. They must not sleep much to be up at that unGodly hour. I'd only ever met Amish in Pennsylvania. My brother had a new roof put on in Ohio by Amish people. These days i bought a new place in Westfield Mass, and apparently there are Mennonite people in this area. That too i never knew, and i grew up in the general area. They have their own community literally, with carpentry businesses and other things. Once in a while we see them at the supermarket or Walmart, getting only select items they can't make and on sale. They're modest, and wear bonnets, long skirts, you notice them but they're a little dressed down compared to ultra restrictive communities such a the Hassidic Jews or traditional Amish which they are not. I actually had to look them up here and read before knowing what Mennonite are exactly. Suffice to say, my guess is that NY state sadly lost a lot of populous due to neglect and terrible governing policies, loss of industry and many migrated including farmers. The Amish people learned of the opportunity to buy land that needed to be fielded and worked. I heard they even have their own bake sale and are quite a presence up there. Where people exit, others come in at some point to cease on missed chances. I do admire & greatly respect their work ethic and disciplined way of life, their simplistic outlook and modest standards. They went about their business but i was freaking out because i am not used to seeing that and didn't know they colonized the areas and live there. It's good someone does!! An at least respectable, hard working people, those are great people you want. The amish bugey was just one element of the eclipse endevour but unfortunately we didn't have too great a time up that way, it was much too far away somehow. I have driven across country and lived on the west coast, AZ, but this particular drive that night was like a twilight zone or something. An that area wasn't very friendly even for a major event, Plattsburgh was itself very nice!! The lakes were GORGEOUS, PHENOMENAL!!!! Those were the highlight and what we should have focused on. I was equally shocked ny the vast beauty of those lakes, they were a deep blue and looked like ocean. The mountains, i can definitely see why the Olympics have been hosted there!!!! But the surrounding villages & hamlets, some were so poor it deeply affected me and i again couldn't believe the conditions and state of such a beautiful natural resourcing region having such desolation & devastation. Some of it was that bad. An these places are very frightening in the darkness when you don't know them. By the time we got to the lakes, the sun was shining and i was stunned & took my breath away by the immense awe & captivating beauty!! It was much too far and because it was such a difficult trek, (we think it's cursed up there, there are roads called "Indian Massacre Road"), there is a lot of depression and sad energy, failure and loss up there deep into NY. We think the energy is THICK of it and it didn't make for a very pleasurable experience nor was the eclipse really worth the nightmare getting up there. I felt conned, but that is a whole other story. I learned a lot about new places by going up there though. An learning is never a bad thing, it's good to be aware and educate ones self.

I wish a lot of people in the world today would take a look at how peace full it is in the Amish community. No wars no violence no guns. ❤

They have guns. They hunt for food, they just don't shoot people!

They do have guns. They use them as many in the country do for hunting and for slaughtering livestock.

I live amongst and know many Amish. You should know that most if not all Amish own guns. They just know how to behave with them.

@@dougsliker7162 They are a testament to the fact that guns are not the problem - it is the person who is holding it. Might we digress :)

The Amish are migrating into many new areas on the east coast. I've seen new Amish settlements in the Highlands of Virginia and also in North Central Maryland.

Thanks for watching. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch. A dialect of German. They speak that among themselves usually. If there are non Amish with them they’ll speak English.

suppose when driving their buggies on the asphalt roads, they need to.
And the scratches you can see do not come from bare hooves.
      yes, you perceive right!
