I counted 19 hyenas there. No lion could withstand them all rushing him, he may waste one or two but would be overcome. But they can't do it. They are almost genetically programmed to live in utter fear of the male lion, it's amazing.

The thing is... Lions dont fear injuries. Hyenas do. Because predators besides dominant male lions have to hunt on their own. That's how it usually goes but people learn that hyena = bad and a scavenger. In reality they get chased off their kill by lions but they don't accept defeat like a cheetah would. The result is that it looks like the hyenas are trying to steal the 'lion kill'.

The thing is... Lions dont fear injuries. Hyenas do. Because predators besides dominant male lions have to hunt on their own. And you cant hunt with an injured leg
Lions can afford injuries, females hunt for them. But lone lions, or lions in all-male prides have to hunt on their own. And that's when hyenas and lions have equal chances. Really. No matter if the lion is too young, too old or is an adult in his prime. As long as he doesnt have a pride if females to hunt for him, a lion never picks a fight with a hyena clan
