You went there! It warms my cold post punk heart to see Andy struggle with Magazine. They were always challenging, but Permafrost was never a song that you played at parties. It is more like reading psychological literature, alone in the dark. I always read the lyrics as an interior monologue of a very troubled soul, and not a literal plan. At least that is how I justified liking the song so much. I’m surprised neither of you commented on how much Formula is riffing on Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, another album about a different shattered soul. Would love to hear reactions to Correct Use of Soap, especially Model Worker, Philadelphia, and Song from Under the Floorboard.

The Correct Use of Soap is just deathless. So crisp, so sinister, so funky, so beautiful.

*_'Deathless'._* Yes. Thankyou. Highly apt word. I've loved that album since I was 12 and that imperishable feeling only intensifies with each listen.
This is the one that made it on to my ultimate playlist; so I guess it's my fav, too.
Great song from a great album. Very impressive knowledge on Magazine
…and more requests over the transom:
The Gun Club, Sex Beat
The Minutemen, Little Man Wirh a Gun In His Hand
X, Johnny Hit and Run Pauline
Captain Beefheart, Owe’d to Alex
DEVO, Gut Feeling/Smart Patrol
I’ll second the Gun Club!
Up my alley, spooky post-punk. I was not familiar with this song, but only with Shot By Both Sides and maybe heard a couple other Magazine songs. So I had to click this. Thanks for the education. Also I suggest the Soft Boys, who were spooky but fully guitar-based 🎸👽
Thanks Matt. And as it happens...

Cheers, Jon.
Excellent band, I am a big fan of them. I rank their first 2 albums very highly with some real belters on both, my favourite is probably 'Definitive Gaze' amazing track! also really like 'Motorcade'. Great way to kick off the week guys, cheers all.
I think Magazine were better live than on record. Just my opinion, but on stage they were mesmerising.
Would loved to have seen them back then.
Cheers, Jon.
This is dark. More goth than goth. Magazine is kind of like a weird mix of punk and progressive rock. It has a punkish simplicity in the rhythm. But It's very layered and symphonic. And the arrangements are complex and methodical. With alot of thought put into it. Which is more of a progressive rock almost Pink Floyd like thing.
I love Magazine and this song is one of their classics. It is an odd place to start, though, with its uncompromising, post-apocalyptic bleakness. My go-to of the first three albums these days is 'The Correct Use of Soap', it's one I came to later and I enjoy its slightly poppier feel. 'Sweetheart Contract' has a great lyric from that record. I think maybe one of the key somgs from Real Life would be good next, Light, Definitive, or Motorcade, for example.
One of my all time fave albums. It's Spiral Scratch.
You should review 'Give me everything". It's in a similar vein re it's relation to the opposite sex.
this takes me back...
I thought it was going to be "Wonderful Land" at 33 1/3, or rerecorded after the band's move to Mordor.
Forgotten Instrumental TFM* of the Day - The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt.
*Classical musicians' slang for total masterpiece
Yea interesting definitely on the Cosby playlist.
