I think this finally gets NES Tetris back to what makes Tetris a puzzle game. The kill screen is, no doubt, one of the crowning achievements of Tetris, but it's more in the marathon tradition, with no real goal beyond survival. If you go all the way back to the days of Jonas's domination, what set him apart (and what made fellow DAS player GreenTea so competitive in the hypertapping era) was incredible stacking skill. NES Tetris is inherently on the "athletic" end of the Tetris spectrum, but once you've become consistent on that front, what makes the difference is how efficiently and cleanly you can stack some blocks. Since NES Tetris is once again a finite game in practice (at least at the world record level) scoring efficiency matters again, which implies only clearing Tetrises and cleanup with singles.

I love tetris, I was once #100 on a worldwide leaderboard for a different version of tetris over a decade ago and the level of skill involved in the game now is absolutey absurd in comparison to what I was doing back then. When you came to talking about the 3 phases of the game, I was sitting here going, ok, yes yes , we know this but its for newbies to the scene, waiting for 1-19 and transition, then lvl 29 etc ... and had to readjust when it was clear phase one is just now including to lvl 29 - which really sinks in how far this game moved in a mere decade and a bit since Ecstasy Doco, that it's just taken as standard play now !

But seriously, thanks for the video Scout! Love you highlighting Andy's long history, going from being a great player somewhat in the shadow of his brother, the world champ; to a stand-out player setting staggering world records and netting regular championship wins himself. Ever since they hit the scene, I've loved the back and forth between dog and Andy, especially the part about how when they face each other in a competition, they feel like no matter who wins, they both win. I feel like everyone really "into" NES Tetris already knows it, but it's nice that that sentimental brotherly rivalry (for lack of a better word) is immortalized in your video!

Me 2 years ago- Cheez's record is going to take a long time before someone breaks that. lol ...well Eric broke that fast.
Me today- Andy's record is going to take a long time before someone breaks that.
Im sure in a few weeks I'll be blown away again. It's just mind-boggling how far Tetris has come.

What's more amazing than the record is the video editing and presentation here. I could barely care less about Tetris, but still watched the whole video because it's just so well presented.
    Really well done. 🎉

as someone who hasn't watched a single tetris video in over a decade on youtube, this was a pure joy to watch. the narrative is so well-constructed that even someone who's completely new to competitive tetris can jump right in and get hyped along with decades-long fans. the build-up was great, the quick history on tetris stages, and details explaining andy's gameplay... just the right amount of interesting info without overwhelming the viewer, while also crescendoing the story right up to the climax reveal.
well done! you're a true master of the youtube form!
    and subbed :)
