My least favourite thing about the shield skills is it feels extremely like you need all of them to work. If any single one of them are missing then you've just automatically lost tempo in a fight since: either any attack you make leaves you wide open, you literally can't attack, or you're too slow to move. Sucks particularly in the arena since if you're going for a shield character, you can't invest in your armour skills, which means the punishment windows for you being slow or leaving yourself open because you deigned attack gets even worse. Feels like the game really punishes you for not going a 2 handed build with riposte. Thank you for the in depth explanation for the mechanics, though.
I agree, as long as there are things like Sir and ogres, 2hs are just the best and Ward is a build-around Skill that I never take. In terms of tempo, especially with Persist, shields let you do two things at once and nothing can beat that if you do it aggressively enough. If you're willing to fight dirty, you only need Mobility. edit: an afterthought, all shields before Adept suck.
I love the maul, it covers unarmoured and armoured foes, hitting a ghoul in the head is super satisfying and bane of the skeleton. I usually trip the enemies then me and Derrin just do downward swings until our victims are dead
Endure. In Arena, if you're blocking so much that you're running out of stamina, you're not attacking enough. Synchrony and Ward are kind of like stance passives, so you'll have to mess around and see what you like. I skip them both but some reputable gentlemen love Ward.
Sorry for commenting when the video is over a year old, but what skills would you recommend for the best shield character possible? Personally, I took all Shield skills except for Endure. For Armor, took all three Manoevering skills, and Security. And for Close Combat, Fend, Feint, and Remise. Not sure if these are good skills to take or not tbh. But it does feel pretty nice to play. Now for the physiology and weapons, I had fun and made him a short fat guy. While playing I can feel that being short is a disadvantage but my logic was that since my center of mass was lower, I would be more stable while taking hits. Then I'm using the wooden round shield with the flail. Flail feels really good, it has lots of reach, hits hard, and can bypass parries. What was your experience with shield characters?
Flails are amazing. Whether or not a skill is good comes down to personal taste, some of the homies swear by Ward. I like taking Mobility, Counter, and Persist. The idea is that Synchrony and Ward make you hold your shield closer to your body but by letting it flail around, I sacrifice defense for some cheesy tricks and grappling. To get the maximum payoff for my silly moves, I use a flanged mace because it does way too much damage. This build frees up a few more points to make the character a generalist instead of shield specialist, which pays off in story mode by letting you also load up on magic. If you're playing story or trying to fight master ogres, shields kinda fall off against the bigger monsters.
@@GilGamesHello Yeah tbh for Story Mode polearms and greatswords seem like the meta. I don't know how you're supposed to defeat Faels and Golems (and Sir i guess) without long weapons.
Do you know if any of the close combat skills work with shields for example. Fend. would it make it quicker to block with a shield? Or are all the close combat skills useless apart from maybe Feint and remise if they apply when using a shield with X.
Close combat skills do work with shields and Fend does make shield blocks faster though Riposte specifically needs you to block with your weapon so it's not as good for shields.
I was toying with the idea and worried it might be too much. I don't know that there's much more to explain, but I'll do this next time I talk about a cooldown.
As someone who apprecietes realism, the requirement to have the "Persist" skill to avoid your attacks magically stopping the moment your shield does the thing it's meant to do.... bothers me
I was recently kicked by an alien at 5 meters when I tried to block him with the defense skill line, now I’ll start a new game with a focus on the push... God help me, what skills should I take?
Those big alien guys eat shields for breakfast but you can keep them at bay with the extra reach of a pole axe. If you must use shields, I'd take Mobility, Counter, Persist and Endure. Otherwise Feint, Fend, and Riposte are the holy trinity of melee skills. Move in Armour 1, 2, and 3 are basically mandatory for plate mail. Insight: Coherence will let you learn the Force Barrier power, which aliens cannot punch through.
@@GilGamesHello I often fail to make left strikes due to the intensity of the battle, should I take Remise for the left swing and subsequently the shield swing?
I run with a friend, of course he sometimes runs far behind the enemy, even though I pressed wait here, but he will always help with a two-handed sword@@GilGamesHello
yes, i try play clean shield man with mace on chain, i find only 1 in green place and there no there was no description as if it was not a game item, but it didn’t seem bad@@GilGamesHello
When this game finally blows up, probably at 1.0, these videos will be so valuable and the views will jump up for sure.
If you don’t use synchrony you can use the character’s jank arm physics to punch opponents with the shield, very useful with kite or the round shields
Excellent yet again Gil, thank you so much for these comprehensive tutorials! You are planting the seeds for trees, here. Keep up the great work!

Shield Strongk! I like that you break down what style types they are useful for. These are great! 😊
6 skills and 5 slots, which one do you advise leaving out
Endure.

arent there 2 further skills? Or are those not unlocked yet?
Anyways, thanks for this video!
There are a bunch of skills that aren't in the game yet.

Very good
why not stick a cooldown icon after stuff like counter, riposte, etc? Just to make it more visual.
Thank you for another lesson sensei 🙏

SHIELD COMBAT>>>>> IMMA EAT DAT UP NYOMNYOMYNOMNOYM
Hey bro
hey man how are you able to change your skills on the fly? is that a mod?
You can press K to open your skills window in story mode or practice arena.
Aren't there 3 more skills tho?
Yeah, there's a bunch of skills not in the game yet.
Does the counter work with any block, or does it have to be a shield?
The shield skill Counter specifically needs a shield block. The close combat skill Riposte lets you do the counter thing off of a weapon block/parry.
As someone who apprecietes realism, the requirement to have the "Persist" skill to avoid your attacks magically stopping the moment your shield does the thing it's meant to do.... bothers me
Gamers everywhere hate the magical stopping wherever it appears.
