Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (also written as Maerten Tromp; 23 April 1598 - 31 July 1653) was a Dutch army general and admiral in the Dutch navy. Son of a ship's captain, Tromp spent much of his childhood at sea, including being captured by pirates and enslaved by Barbary Corsairs. In adult life, he became a renowned ship captain and naval commander, successfully leading Dutch forces fighting for independence in the Eighty Years War, and then against England in the First Anglo-Dutch War, proving an innovative tactician and enabling the newly independent Dutch nation to become a major sea power. He was killed in battle by a sharpshooter from an English ship. Several ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy have carried the name HNLMS Tromp after him and/or his son Cornelis, also a Dutch Admiral of some renown.
When this dev log came out, I was really disappointed that my namesake ship was probably the worst one ever. Now it looks decent, definitely still on the weaker side but worth getting for some coal
A lot of times Wikipedia's using US based sources which often classify ships by how the USA would classify them rather than what the original nation designated them. In the US Tromp almost definitely would have been a destroyer leader and even the description of the intended role is exactly that. I believe that's why many sources label it a destroyer leader without noting that the home nation designated it a cruiser at the time. Calling it a destroyer leader isn't wrong, but it needs to be qualified.
Tromp airstrikes is what made her good. She sacrifice the torps, speed and maneuverability to get the airstrikes and I think it's quite decent. Sure you can't pen bbs but if you land perfectly on their superstructure it will do some damage. Her guns are decent but I would not want do open gunboat too often as Tromp don't have the speed like the French to dodge incoming shells nor she have any heals if you take damage.
At least it seems to be an interesting ship albeit not for any competitive scene. Curious though how they give it great concealment when everything about it is geared for medium to long distance combat
I wouldn't be too hasty about that... Having the ability to force someone out from hiding WITHOUT having to find a Torp Angle is actually insanely useful...
i know this ships is pretty mixed in terms of reviews, but my god i love this thing, the airstrikes having only a 10 second lead time is actually a huge improvement over the cruisers 15
I’m rather new to WoWs (started in May) Halland, Shima, Marceau, Daring & now the Tromp. The Daring is the easiest by far, but the Tromp is the most fun. It’s soooo toxic! You can pretty much perma fire any cruiser/bb that’s within 12k & if you’re really lucky those airstrikes can almost 1-shot a DD. It boosted my average dmg, but then again, i’m still learning the ships & proper positioning. Super excited for the Gallard, the Orage is super fun, just not paying 20k gold on a ship that’s gonna be free in a few days.

I'm sorry. A destroyer with air strikes is counter to the game I think. We are playing a ship game so it's supposed to be about the guns and in the case of a DD the torps. I never agreed with the airstrike as a gimmick for the Dutch cruisers either. I know how opinions are but this one's mine.
My question would be why not the air strike reload in slot 4? I guess speed over more strike would be the reason. also, I went with RPF instead of FB since I like to be wary of where ships are.
If this thing had a heal I would likely get it next time I had coal, I love Gouden Leeuw and Dutch airstrikes. But big size, poor maneuverability and speed, no smoke, no heal, no saturation, no armour is a rather miserable combination
