14:51 there is a way to favourite the effects, titles and translations in fcp, you just have to create a folder manually in Motion Templates folder and copy effects into the favourite folder
I used to use Final Cut Pro. I still think it's great. But I started using DaVinci because I can use it on Windows or Mac. And when 18.5? came out with the auto transcript feature that was a wrap. Great video!
While there are certain thing FCPX does for speed, I think you're missing looking at the speed boost using the speed editor and potentially the cuts page. I can get through tremendous amounts of footage with that jog shuttle I/O keys. Trimming in the edit page, when set up, really gives one the ability to fine tune an edit without taking your eyes off the output.
Good, informative comparison. Would be interested on how they stack up if you weren't on a Mac. Also, great way to name drop, or movie drop, with the Herzog documentary--that was a great production!
It’s the few times I can name drop- people always ask to show what I work on but I can’t typically share any current projects. This was one time that it was ok. Thanks for watching and the comment!
FCP has Voice Isolation and many plugins for Audio. The definition benefit of DR is that track wide plugin assignment. Hoping Apple does something similar.
I've been using Davinci to edit for 11 years now and *PLAYBACK* is definitely its weak spot. I mean, c'mon Blackmagic, get it together! I could render a timeline in FCP7 and get spot on playback, but not in Resolve.
Are you caching at all in Resolve? FCP caches in the bg which is amazing, but part of it's amazing performance is that you are playing back cached prores files (some of the time anyway). Even if you just enable caching but don't pause, it will render out the cache while you are playing back. If you enable show all frames, it will cache every frame. I find even just enabling smart cache goes a long way for the final render.
I don’t like using caching or background render, eats up too much space, and often times I am working in multiple programs at the same time so background rendering will slow down the computer overall. I only cache when needed. But typically I leave it off. I do enable it closer to finishing because it does help with the final render. Thanks for watching and the comment!
@@RafaelLudwig FCP isn't background rendering at all? If so then yah, damn, still such a powerful tool. I don't mind caching early if I managed storage well, prores cache isn't too large and I keep a separate cache disk around anyway for waveform cache and other caching needs Resolve does anyway. Especially if I'm leaning on Fusion at all, I find it needs caching so those effects don't drive me nuts.
You mention "precession" regarding Resolve. Please define that. Granting FCP's keyframing is limited but I really can't think of anything beyond that. I'd think for long-form projects, FCPs Keywording, and other organizing tools are a major plus. For me, one of the bigger FCP color issues is the lack of Grouping, which Color Finale does of course. Regarding Audio FCP has a very good set of Logic plugins but it does lack the organizational abilities that tracks have. Apple should consider better use of lanes for that including a hierarchy to avoid having to do Compound Clips for audio.
DR precision I mean, being able to fine tune any aspect of the shot, be it with color grading, or audio mixing, or to a larger extent clean up of shots using VFX. Or even building motion graphics from scratch that are unique to the project not templates. I can get down into the weeds with expressions when needed, or build complex color grades for nearly any format - or deliver a DCP for film. I'd love to use FCP for every project, and I do start many in it, only to export an xml and finish in DR. I definitely have a creative flow in FCP, and feel more technical in DR. Thanks for watching and the comment!
I havent had resolve struggle with playback with like 50mins videos with potentially hundreds of effects and animations. Ive only made about 5 videos with it but ive had no issues like that
not sure what you are trying to say about the davinci graphics and an adjustment clip because thats just not true in you can literaly drop the graphics or text title above the video and click itand edit
What I added in this video was an effect not a title (even though it's a title callout) It's a fusion effect, that is why I put it on an adjustment and not on the clip. Yes if it were a title I would place on a track. Thanks for watching and the comment!
8:45 Wow! Normalize to -14LFUs! 🙌 I do this manually using an Adaptive Limiter, two Compressors, and a LUFs meter that works in real time, ie. you have to play the track! I would much prefer to press a button. Maybe I should bring all voice recordings into Resolve before I begin and -14LUFs it at the outset.🤔It would save a lot of time manually reducing dynamic range
Surley this video started with a massive bias given you can edit via the audio file within Resolve but you used an external program becuase FCPX does not. Meant constructively but I am confused why you woud do this if wanting to show both. You have a round-trip that does not apply in Resolve if done in the App.
It really comes down to speed for creating for RUclips. the external program I use regardless if it's fcp or Dr. It's the closest thing to an assistant editor I have found. not only transcribes but also uses AI to removed bad takes (or repeat takes, or half takes) and also filler words, and pauses. DR only removes pauses, so it's not really the same, Thanks for watching and the comment!
Hand offs only work if the other person or client is also on Final Cut Pro - which is rarely the case for the work I do. Pre rendering is out of the question when all aspects need to remain editable. Unless you know of some magic I don't to pass a project along that would open in premiere pro or DaVinci Resolve or on windows? Thanks for watching and the comment!
The truth is that this trying to keep comparing one with the other, makes no sense, they are two NLE, that work differently, the problem is, you have to decide which one you will always work with, to do the things you can do in Resolve, is difficult to match, the change from one program to the other, has no competition, from editing to a VFX program and then to give it, your final touch in the Color grading, with two programs so professional, is incredible and then has a DAW that has nothing to envy any DAW out there and I said that this option to choose is simple, for YT work FCP is more than enough, but if you convert your YT videos, in a more advanced way, I would use DR, because it is so easy to switch from one program to another, especially if you are doing VFX work and more advanced Color grading. Trying to see that one is better than the other is pointless.
@@kobinsadvance FCP is NLE design version 2. It's a more rationalized re-design of what an NLE was, which was a mashup of non-linear film editing and linear VTR editing. The original NLE design was not as non-linear as it might have been. And the metaphors of bins and making timelines of selects refers to things people have no knowledge of. It's far more powerful to organize footage by metadata than folders and bins. I learned VTR editing. Then OG NLE. And then I studied how FCP was designed to be used and then stopped using folders full of timelines of selects and started using metadata and smart collections and one timeline (which is necessary to use Unused Clips metadata.) It was a simple rational decision. I like learning and early adopting. What we need now is the next level of non-linearity: effectively paper editing, for working with speech. Like Gling(?) which allowed Rafael to do a paper edit. When working with language, words are faster and easier to organize as words on a page (nonilnear) rather than audio (linear).
The reason you’re having any slowdown with resolve is because you probably have a weak computer. I have an M1 Ultra with 128 gigs of RAM and it never slows down. If you buy the new… Not out yet… M4 ultra with lots and lots of RAM… You will not have the slowdown problem whatsoever even with 8K.
This is the worst solution in the software industry. Because I don't bother to optimize my algorithms and data structures for speed, I simply use better hardware. I work with FCP on a M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB and edit flight videos with up to 5 4k tracks without any problems. Effects are only added at the end when everything has been reduced to 1-2 tracks. I don't understand the workflow of bringing the effects into the timeline so early.
Can you get more control over those Motion VFX drop ins if you use Motion? Also, to your last point, you can make a favorites folder for transitions and effects in FCP. You just have to manually create it in the motion templates folder. I name mine -Favorites so it shows up on top. I agree though. As much as I love doing color and audio in Davinci, FCP wins for me every time because of the speed, efficiency, and overall editing workflow. When projects start getting bigger and more complicated you have to worry about so much with Davinci to make sure you don't move or delete something important on accident.
I have almost never opened up Motion, it's one of those apps I probably should learn, but I wouldn't ever use it for an actual project when I use AE for all motion graphics I do, (and VFX) and fusion is the thing I am learning still. I wish there was an easier way to create favourites - would love it if it was drag and drop. Thanks for watching and the comment Lawerence!
Great comparison :) I use Resolve and sometimes FCPX, find it much better using Resolve as i have the Editors keyboard, mini color panel with Mac Studio M2 Ultra. Dedicated hardware controllers makes a huge difference. @rafaelludwig I make title packs for Davinci Resolve if you'd like to try them ? Theres also an affiliate program
E I don't know, but for me the way my brain works da Vinci resolve just makes more sense. I guess it's the nodes.
