the a2 is a cool little car that was way ahead of its time and is probably the last truly cleverly engineered car made by audi at a time before they started making the same car in 3 different sizes to appeal to the lane 3 brigade. they were extremely light, aerodynamic and pioneered aluminium construction in mass market vehicles, also the turbo diesels are ridiculously economical. in my opinion, it's still a fresh looking design that doesn't look out of place today, especially when you add some coilovers and dished wheels.
Not to mention being actually reliable. Cost them a fortune to build at the time.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I always used to scoff at them a little because of their unusual looks but having read about them more I was intrigued. The aluminium construction, light weight (most were well under 1000kg) and sheer space considering the external dimensions means it was a total winner in terms of packaging, vastly underrated. The 3 cylinder diesels were way ahead of their time too. Far cleverer than the A1, in all honesty, despite it's more appealing looks.
I have a Audi a2 an completely agree with everything you said I hate it when people hate on it when they know absolutely nothing about the car just judging on looks I have the 1.4tdi remapped got 0-60 in 9.5 which is not bad at all for a 14 year old 1.4 diesel and returns 50mpg and better yet not had one complaint at rear leg room because of those sunken rear footwells in 1 an half years of owning it
the a2 was an incredible little car in terms of engineering at the time of production. I like how people just dismiss it as a piece of shit; shows a lack of knowledge.
shame it doesn't have the LED headlights and taillights but other than that, looks great. fantastic review as always

I got this as my first car too, i’m 18 paid £6500 for it only done 40000 miles and is automatic. 1.4k insurance for first year though for me

Cool video Jamie, I do rather like the A1 but I don't think I'd have one as I think it's just a bit too small personally.
The problem is car manufacturers get small engines and put turbos on to trick you into thinking it's a fast car when in reality it isn't its just straining a weak engine to be something that it isn't.
My first car was a 2001 Honda Accord 1.8 soch vtec with 140bhp and that shifted. I bet that A1 can move pretty quickly.

+Pete harris It's a shame because it has a Seat badge people undermine the car. Would you know if Seat Leon fr MK 2 is anyone good? Heard the models from 06 - 08 breakdown fairly easily, tempted to pick one up.
I had the Polo R-Line as a first car, basically the A1 just a 1.2 Turbo, you cant get much better for the price than the A1/Polo/Ibiza ranges. I'd even go as far as saying i'd happily own another later in life.
Always get a 1.6 THP 208 or DS3 for less and get a better car for the money
they come in a 182bhp variant as well

As much as I would rather have an Audi I dont think it should go unmentioned the 1.4TSI that's in a Seat Ibiza Cupra and is 180bhp from factory, and is turbo charged and supercharged.
It's also a problematic car.
imstillherem8 not really after numerous cases they revisited the engine and changed quite a few things (when the facelift was released so 2012ish) it made the car much more reliable
Audi also used that engine variant with the A1 1.4 185 ps (twin-charged). I had the ibiza cupra (2013 plate) and had absolutely no issues...was an excellent engine.
Problematic car if you don't treat it correctly*
joelgartland HPGuitar my point exactly it was just unfortunate that the earlier engine code made such a bad reputation for the entire range of cars using the 1.4 twincharged engine

A1 black edition 150bhp.. I can't hear any turbo flutter of BOV.. I understand it isn't a big turbo but I can hear one in the 1l ecoboost fiesta but not in this... Anyone know what's happening?

Yes it is, 74-78. They are very much used in Hillclimb events now, RUclips - Audi 50 hillclimb. Obviously custom built, but man they look awesome!

hang on did you just say 140bhp i thought you knew about cars 122bhp is official figure. and as far as i know a standard generic map pushes it upto 160 might get more with some rr time but i doubt it unless you go to stage 2.
Jamie, you have a distinct lack of performance Audi's on your show. Very much looking forward to when you can review some of the S5, RS Audi's which spring to mind.

Review a Seat Seon 1.2 turbo possibly one of the best small Engines out there with the 7 speed dsg gearbox rather nippy!
grant the 1.2 ford fiesta is great. it's a 1.2 fuel injected eco boost engine pushing out about 140+bhp
Charlie Vaughan it's a 1.0 not a 1.2, and 140bhp is the highest output version after 125 and 100. There is also an 80bhp non-turbo version
RWL2012 there is a 1.2 but it's one of the newer models and costs more money
Charlie Vaughan no there isn't. The 1.2 was the old 4 cylinder engine 82bhp
RWL2012 well even tho is was the older model it is still a 1.2 ford fiesta
For the price they should at least have had DAB as standard.

whats the insurance like on these? Im looking at getting an a1 as a first car but ideally id want an s line but i feel like the insurance would give me a swift dicking back to reality. (Pls dont hate ive actually saved up to buy this myself for 3 years)

JΛMΛ yea propper, it’s been my dream car so I really just wanted to have it.... I’ve had it a month now so much things I learnt about it after actually getting it, like the cruise control and the stop start stuff which is soo beneficial especially driving on country roads and fast speeds everyday very nice for new passed aswel tells u when to change gears etc and VERY Good on diesel I have a 1.6 I’d say 25/30 will be a full tank (I’ve only ever put £10 in and it gives me just below half tank) x

have you had any gearbox issues? debating a boq but supposed to be a common fault
The DSGs can be troublesome - we had one that stopped selecting gears and cost £2100 to get the gearbox fixed, plus removal and fitting at a VAG specialist. The car had only done 35k miles! But I know of other DSG gearboxes that have done over 200k without any bother!
Matt Limbert only problem I've had with the car is at 65k the timing chain and water pump went costing £850 to repair (would have been a lot more if I went to SEAT) It all depends how you treat it though, when they went I was new to the tsi engine, unaware of the issues that can occur if oil isn't checked regularly etc. Had it 4 years now, at 86k and it runs better than ever. Checking the oil every two weeks and keeping the water topped up... no problems with the gearbox though. Unbelievably fun car!
Piston Rings anyone 😄, my mate had a Fabia VRS with this engine new, absolute garbage, got compo for oil leaks damaging his drive.
Cabcurtains - different engine that was supercharged and turbocharged in the vrs pretty sure
