I started using a machine in June. RUclips DIY videos have taught me a lot, and I am so grateful for the instructors. My thread jiggles and wiggles all the time when on the top holder. I will try these methods, until I find the one that's best for me to use. Thank you for this video.
Thank you so much. You're much like me, you prefer to make your own solutions then have to go out and fork out more money. You have a brain that's always trying to solve issues in a low cost manner. I truly appreciate your innovation. My house burned and I lost everything I owned which meant ALL of my sewing stuff, and I don't have to like to go out and buy more things and I purposefully bought 1 white cone and 1 black cone of thread and that was what I was going to use for everything so I could save and not have to have a bunch of things around my house. you've really helped me think outside the box. You are helping people (and the environment!) and that's all that's important in life, really. -Nicholette
This is incredibly useful and creative, and I literally laughed out loud when you got to the freestanding version and started naming all components; MacGuyver would be so very proud 😄
Thank you so much for this video. I recently bought a cheap overlocker spool and then realised that it wasn't going to fit my sewing machine! Doh! I was so disappointed that I had wasted my money but thanks to you I can now use my big spool for sewing projects for years to come! xx
lol, this is the best thing ever! I jimmied up a paint stick and mini bottle brush combo and it’s working like a charm .. sometimes we need people like you to awaken our creativity .. saved $20 on a cheap thing from amazon - thanks so much :)
I am so glad I found your video! I was thinking of ordering one today but now I don't have to. Your very first suggestion is perfect. I use binder clips all the time for my fabric and now I have another use for them. Thank you!
I love your creative, out of the box ideas, Angela. Using cones of threads, at least the ones you use a lot of, can save quite a lot of money. Smart :)

Thank you!! And it's awesome you gave so many different alternatives. I had seen a video that showed the mug method, but it did not mention the thread going up through something before running through the machine. I've been doing it this way for a couple of months now, but have been having major tension issues. I am now pretty sure this may be the cause. I'm going to look through my desk to see what I can use that you showed here!
You are so welcome! You are 100% correct. There is unwanted tension going from the mug up to your machine. The thread may be breaking or your stitching would look tight and gathered. If you have a junk drawer like mine, I’m sure you can find something to raise up your thread and have it run through smoothly. very creative ideas. I buy larger cones for my projects and do not have enough thread stands to use for all of my machines, I will be using some of your suggestions. Thank you for sharing.
OMG SO brilliant, buying small thread drove me crazy, Can you use the surging thread cones to? I have been told the thread is completely different & should never be used on a basic machine. SO GLAD YOU POPPED UP ON MY YT PAGE.
Thanks so much Ann. It's tempting to use serger thread as its cheaper, but it's not the same quality as normal sewing thread. It's finer to to keep seams less bulky and won't be as strong and smooth. Please have a look at some of my other tutorials on my channel. Cheers!

Thank you. I tried everything to get my diy thread stand to work, but the tension was far too loose. I used your bulldog clip tip on the spool holder and that put the tension right.
Thank you, I love this tutorial, the first one I see from you! I already subscribed!!! Can I ask you a question? I have a lot of plastic and wooden thread spools that I had never thrown away because I wonder what can we do with them. Seen some videos about key chains or rewind with new thread, but nothing I really like. I am not talking about the cone ones but the one or two inches ones. Any DIY good ideas? Thank you very much!
Thanks so much Cary! Funny you ask me this question. I have a project in mind that I have put off for a long time. I keep meaning to make a video for this very problem of having all these small spools. Please send an email to me and I will forward you a photo of what I am talking about.
