Cant believe you have never done something this small before! It is such a joy to do work on these small scapes. Glad you discovered it and gave it a try!
I’m a fan of your channel and have enjoyed your content so much. I have been inspired to aquascape my 76 gal half round aquarium but had to delay the process due to my sister being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My beautiful sister lost her battle with cancer this month and it totally broke my heart. Watching how you created something so beautiful out of something so small was humbling. It inspired me to aquascape on a smaller scale with my 5 gal aquarium. I think I will make it a tribute aquarium to my sister. I am hoping that the process will help me heal inside while honoring my beautiful sister. Thank you, thank you so much for creating such wonderful content and inspiring so many. I will try to video my aquascape journey and will share it with you when I’m done. PS: I will also watch your friends channel to get some pointers and will make sure to put my hand on the substrate creating an upward arch before pouring the water in. Thanks again!
Now you know the genius of MD, he's truly gifted. Mixing sand, gravel, and aqua soil keeps it from being dirty. Using tiny, tiny plants keeps it to scale. Building smaller to larger towards the back gives it depth. I'm preparing to mimic his Ikea cylinder idea and if I come anywhere close to his I'll feel like I did something.
Genius move with the use of paintbrush, and colander, for slow water adding! What a great idea, including the whole process. Have a 6 gallon with some plants & two snails. Plants haven't grown much. Now I know why. I love your approach, and not being stuffy, or pretentious about all that you know. A mark of a pro, is one that makes whatever it is they do, look easy. Thanks for the easy breezy explanations, I know what I have to do now! Awesome sauce!
So glad you made this video George. I really enjoy Md fishtanks as well. I myself have a 12 inch diameter bowl in my kitchen that was set up a year ago using this method and it's doing great. Funny enough, he recently featured a tiny desktop scape that looks alot like another i have in my kitchen. All my scapes use this method and all are different depending on lighting of course. Has been a great learning tool as i advance in my hobby. Only my oldest setup gets liquid ferts since the nutrients from the soil have been depleted. My smallest scape holds about a quart of water (if that) and i find it needs a water change every other day. I also use the same technique of just sitting it in the sink however i just fill a pitcher of declorinated water and an air line running down in. So much fun with so little and very rewarding. 👍👍👍
Hey George, just wanted to say that I am really loving your video editing and the quality of your videos lately. The intro was so captivating of you standing up and the footage is phenomenal. It's been a pleasure watching you improve your technique both in aquascaping and video editing these past couple of years. Keep up the good work!
I love the little scape. I have been a fan of MD Fish Tanks for long enough that I am pretty sure that I have watched most if not all of his videos. I also love run on sentences.
So funny watching you try to get your hands in there lol. Great to show how little is needed to make one though, thanks for the little competition, I enjoyed that immensely.
i recently got a 3.6 gallon vase for 12 dollars from hobby lobby- they were on sale for half off- something that may have costed me 30 usd at a petsmart i got for 12 usd- it is now my fav tank and i dont even have anything in it other than some plants and some ghost shrimplets
You inspired me, George, I was looking for a low-tech aquascape. I will try my hand on and share the photos if you like. I am an absolute beginner, never done anything like that. Keep doing it.
I did a dry start with dwarf hair grass and have done the aquarium with zero ferts, no co2, and no filter, and the 10 gallon has a full carpet of dwarf hair grass. It’s quiet beautiful
I have a little larger bowl on my kitchen counter. I use a small sponge filter for water movement. Just water changes twice a week. Even shrimp in there. It is a balanced system now. Which is the important one in this style of aquarium. You have to maintain a balance between input of light and nutrients or you have an algae bowl.
I think it’s interesting idea to see Mark and share some knowledge to your subscriber, By the way i like the way you pick some plants in this tank and put it together, beautiful
I love how excited you got about this little bowl considering all the epic scrapes you've done. 😊 This is great for me when I have healthy surplus plants and I feel bad about throwing them out.
This is a really cool idea for these old fishbowls that people have lying around. The other day I found my old fishbowl and I didn't want to throw it out. Now I'm glad I didn't do it :D
Did subbed to Mark just last week, RUclips showed his channel after watching probably one of your vids, liked this style allready but did not had the time for it. I saw a Lott of Serpadesign vids, somewhat simular to Mark s but more paludarium or terrarium style, Also great content and he uses materials from outside( so completely cost less) except for the bowl or jar. I did tried it before and let aquatic plants grow out of the bowl, did you know when some plants get above water level they will bloom, have you ever seen the Pogostemon erectus flower: unbelievably beautifull , you have to experience that one. Gravel with a roottab worked for me back then, I know of times that complete soils were not available . This makes extra new people ready for our hobby. Don't forget to change water and do some maintenance( glas leaning) Cheers George
This was really nice to watch... I really like MD fish tanks, foo the flowerhorn and serpa design (Even though he doesnt't do a lot of fish tanks). I'm quite fascinated with this type of tank, would love to try and make one myself - but my husband says no more tanks for me...
Now this was interesting George. I've been waiting for you to do something like this! It is indeed a fun lowbudget way to enjoy nature and make use of your cuttings. I've tried to keep a Wabi Kusa a few times now, keeping the plants growing long term has been a bit of a challenge. Like the idea of adding water so that it becomes a small aquarium. Got to try this, I think it's cool 😎 Keep on scaping mate 👍
Nice little scape. These are called Walstad scapes after the scientist Diana Walstad. She pioneered the low-tech approach back in the '90s, and published the diffinitive guide in 1999. "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium: a Practical Manual and Scientific Treatis." You WILL have to do 3-5 water changes, initially; after that the water will stay clear. Your drain instinct was spot on but the fill is the same, air hose fast drip. Most of us Walstadt-ers cap our soil with a layer of pea gravel. Ratio is flexible but a 1:2 soil to gravel really helps anchor everything. You may want to add an apple snail or small nerite to check algae. Well done👏
Heyah George, cool little scape project, I’ve been thinking of doing something similar lately. So I’m keen to see how your bowl micro ecosystem progresses.🤘
I have a similar bowl, plants soil all ready too but wanted to buy some spider wood. I've been meaning to do this for a while and I'm glad that it looks like so much fun!
Fantastic. I have 3 of these little scapes on my kitchen table. They are a great way for us to learn things like what plants will make it? which plants can get by with very little light? etc? So fun. Thank you for sharing! - Little Bobby
This is a great video but the price point on the title is misleading. He brought the bowl but didn't have to buy the substrate, plants, decorations, etc. because he had them already. It would cost way more than $10 if someone had to buy everything. The plants alone would have costed at least $15 to 20 and that's if you brought it off of something on CL or FB marketplace. The price would be double at a fish shop.
Hi George, I'm really inspired by your setup! I am currently doing one but seem to be having issues. I've been doing more than 50% water changes daily for the past 1.5 weeks. Lights are 4W for 14h a day. Some of the plants like hydrocotyle have melted. My Staurogyne repens is also facing challenges. Algae has also started growing because of the rotting debris. As I'm in SG and the temperature can be rather high for a fish tank, I do face algae challenges. The water is cloudy everyday but understandable as it's cycling. My ramshorn snail is doing well and I think I even saw little baby snails. Is it due to a wrong choice of plants? Should I remove the dying plants and replant? To battle the algae, should I add Armano shrimps?
Hi, it’s probably down to the plant choice. Just keep experimenting and having fun! I’ve only changed the water once in 3 weeks with no issues so maybe try that...
I've been subscribed and following Mark for a long time. He does amazing no filter, planted tanks. Good job with your desk top all natural bowl, George. Add a nerite snail and a couple of shrimp and it will be perfect. Love these videos where you go outside your comfort zone and try new things. 😘 👍💕👍
Good day sir im a subscriber. Can i ask? What kind of soil is that? I have a bowl also just like yours. And how many days before i get my fish in the tank? Thank you in advance
Ahh yes the ten dollar setup, once you already own all the plants and hard scape and substrate. It’s also very rare to find a bowl for that cheap but still nice scape.

I was fascinated with this. I always watch MD Fish Tanks. It is almost another aspect of aquascaping..

Out to buy a glass bowl right now. 👍🏻 also MD Tanks is a great channel. CO2 from sugar, yeast water and a plastic bottle !! Awesome

Do you need to use the Tropica substrate and Tropica Soil or can you use any gravel ontop of the substrate ? Great vid 😃
Tropica Substate is designed to be used under gravel. Tropica Soil is best used on its own. In here I used Soil 👍
