Thanks for a very informative video. Giving our daughter 3 acres next door. I bought a new backhoe ($7K) for my Branson 3520 a month ago, then paid $950 a few days ago for the perk test which is scheduled for 10am in the morning. Was told that if we hired someone to expect to pay $25 to $30K and for self installed around $5k. Fingers crossed that this passes for a conventional system. Will also be using the backhoe for the footers, water and gas lines as well as landscaping, etc. Will hire someone to put a foundation in and frame it, then finish it ourselves.

Just wanted to pop in and say how incredible you are! I liked thinking about what your kids got to see. The massive amount of work that went into building the house, then having it here on youtube for them to see forever, for your grandkids . Not just the hard work, but the standard you set, how you made decisions. We all get to enjoy it. Work beyond measurable value that extends in so many directions. You built beauty in every facet. Is that heaping praise? I don't think so. Paul you're the man that shows up, society can exist because people keep promises, care, and as a result can trust. Such a chaotic environment to plan in, but you did it so well. Thank you both Paul & Emily.

$400 percent test…I wish lol. Perc test was $1500 here in NY, and I had to have a temporary log bridge built for the equipment to access the proposed septic area, due to a very small stream crossing. That was $4000. Good ol NY.

I'm going to install a presby septic system soon for a 2 bedroom. $4200 in parts. Health Department said I had to past a test which took me 3 tries a fee to take the test of $40 each time. I figure I'll have $8,000 in it. Installers wanted 17,000 to 21000.

In Iowa it's the same kind of deal; you can take a weekend class + test for around $400 IIRC. But again as Mr. Post himself described whether or not that certification is acceptable in a particular Iowa county is questionable. In my county (still in Iowa) only a certified installer can do this work, or a certified installer must be on site while the work is being done.

Well done, Paul, Emily! Many areas are now requiring anaerobic systems, hope your later content can cover some. Additionally, with water usage becoming a greater and greater problem, a 500 gallon tank pied to recover grey water to be reused as outdoor watering and such could be very useful. FR

I'm in Michigan and the perk test was $400, as of last week, and they dug in three separate locations. The prices of materials seem pretty comparable to what we were told here. We also looked at an engineered field, however, we were told upwards of $40,000! I about fainted.

Here in Virginia it cost over $2k just for the soil work. They don't do "perk" tests here, but rather require a soil scientist to evaluate the soil by inspecting the soil makeup, layers, ground water, etc. Once the soil work is done, it goes to the county for approval...another $650. No DIY allowed, a certified septic installer has to do the work. Once completed, the soil scientist comes back out to inspect...then back to the county for approval. Very expensive.

@@ImYourHucklebery117 then why hasn’t pay increased the same? Wages now are not too far off what they were in 2001. But everything cost 4x more. Then they force you to go overkill on everything to make it “code”. They wanted me to install a 4500 gallon sewer with an 400’ drain field for a 3 bedroom house all because it had a tiny house in my back yard with the toilet in the plans to be connected on the main house sewer. When a 1000 gallon septic and 75-100’ would last me my whole life and then some.

Times change, and so do the code standard for sceptic systems.

Seems to be over kill based on how we used to do it here in NC years ago? I am sure this is based on EPA/county regulations. I assume you cannot drive vehicles or work equipment over the drain field?? If so you need to take that into consideration right? I also assume you can't plant trees, shrubbery or a garden over the drain field, right??
