    2:02 - I just realized a paragraph was cut from the edit. To help it make more sense this was meant to be included…
    “This means when compared to the Core i9-12900K, the 5800X3D is exceptionally good value, priced almost 30% lower and then you have the memory cost which is significantly less assuming you want to unlock the full potential of the Core i9 part. You can of course pair the 12900K with DDR4 memory”…. but at that point it still costs more than the 5800X3D and is now slower.

      Top of the line gaming performance from Intel = 670 and 800. AMD = 450 and you can use old motherboards. Also as a reminder AMD just dropped the price on the 5950x down 200 bucks to 600. Each company only gets to shine in the light for a couple minutes lately so let's give AMD the crown and give proper credit where it's due. You guys keep up the outstanding work you do! We've only been closing on physical limits from a size perspective (still room there left still took). There's a lot of creativity left to how these things communicate to each other, how they are scheduled, and how software is programed.
      So no worries there, more than a life time of improvement on Silicon semi conductors alone. Possible that in another life time we won't even be using sillicon anymore or semi connectors anymore

      for silicon. The realistic limit for silicon transistor size is around 2nm(about 10 silicon atoms). Still some ways to go, but the required r&d budget will probably far outscale the gains. Of course the way you measure(Intel 14 nm process has transistors same size as TSMC 7nm) and round off your numbers can make you play a bit with the math as well.

    Thanks for including UHD results in these tests, most people seem to consider UHD tests "boring" in CPU reviews, because in most situations you're GPU limited at that resolution. But there is still valuable info in those tests, in some games the CPU does matter, and without reviews like this it's impossible to know if the higher tier CPU will give any benefit to those gaming at 2160p resolutions or if the more expensive CPU is just a waste of money.

      If there are ever situations you will chase frames over fidelity at 4k by turning down settings or upscaling, which is definitely conceivable for many users, then it's worth having a better CPU. Also, when the next gen GPUs release they are rumoured to double performance, which would put the issue right back on you CPU at 4k. Finally. It makes these vids look more like AMD marketing material or showing off a platform probably none of us are going to buy like z690 because we're already on AM4. So it's most helpful to us who're actually going to buy it and not just look at it from a marketing or technical standpoint to compare it to the older gen Ryzen processors we'd be upgrading from, and to how much it can stack up against a sustained turbo on 5900x or 5950x in gaming, which I do already know some games it doesn't by a wide margin thanks to its lower clocks. So this is *only* going to be helpful on cache hungry games, not productivity or gaming on clock hungry games...although Cities Skylines surprises me, so I wonder how it's even doing that?

Budget PC gamers are going to be going for (rather, already had) getting a 5600x. That's a great budget gaming CPU, though even that was a bit pricey on release.
      Budget gaming is more toward the $100-200 mark, with $300-400 being the more midrange end of the spectrum (like a 3700x/5700XT or 2070 super reference is midrange). Aka, you'll get much, MUCH better results by just running your DRAM at ≈3800-3866MHz w/ a 1:1 ≈1900-1933MHz "F-clock" (Infinity Fabric clock), as is the 1:1 silicon limit of most Zen 3 chips (although if your specific chip can hit ≈3933-4000MHz DRAM w/ a ≈1966-2000MHz F-clock, then by ALL MEANS DO IT!!!) with as absolutely LOW of manually tightened timings as you can manage!!!

      At the time I was considering this, the X was going for $330 and X3D is $450, thats %26.6 price difference for %9 better at 1440p, and %1 better at 4K. Considering that I play at those resolutions, that money is better spent on a gpu.
      Also, my main reason to upgrade is because I use solidworks, which is a 1-2 thread program so the X has better single threaded performance not to mention OC performance if I need it.
      Now, the extra cache could prove to be beneficial for future games but since I needed the single thread performance, the X is better for me, if I were gaming only I'd probably go with X3D and keep it for as long as possible, minimum 5 years.

    • @Hugh_I
      @Hugh_I 2 года назад

      I'd guess more cache would be a far bigger plus over clock speed here. Assuming you have enough cores that it doesn't run on the same ones as the game, encoding and streaming video on different cores shouldn't care for clock speed all that much, and not interfere with the game by doing computations. But he CPU is shoveling a lot of data around for video encoding. A CPU with less cache should run out of space on it sooner and drop more cached data, thus need more memory accesses to get it back, the more data hungry processes you have running in parallel. That could impact gaming performance. So my bet would be that especially for a lot of multi tasking with data heavy tasks, this CPU should shine.

I got it paired up with my Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black with a (1x140mm and 2x120mm) PWM Noctua Chromax fans. Had to ditch the other 140mm fan and add it as a rear exhaust fan for my case. I did this so the CPU gets more heat out of the case some I don't see techtubers do when installing air coolers. I live in the Midwest and can use a $60 decent window fan to clean my bedroom/setup and it helps a lot even in the summer. So when my room gets hot I can set the fan to exhaust air out the room which helps especially in the summer. I have the 5800x OCd to 4.75GHZ at 1.2V Max. it idles at 35C and the max is 75C ( Cinebench at 100%) which is not often since the CPU has more than enough headroom for gaming/editing. There will be no PS5 Pro, the consoles were made to last the length of the generation. Putting in such a substantially faster architecture in a mid gen refresh, IMO of course, would be a misstep. What they need to do, and Microsoft as well, is limit this generation to 5-6 years like they should be, then release MUCH faster consoles in late 2026. By that time, they should be on the next, next architectures for CPU/GPU.

      @@haukionkannel because it's Zen architecture it would be easier and more future compatible to switch from one to the other seamlessly. From Zen 2 to 3 would actually be more beneficial to game devs and it would also make game development far more dev friendly. Sony was the company to always do a power gap innovation in the past it's just Microsoft completely blindsided them with their own console specs. Remember the PS3 was technically far more powerful than the Xbox 360 and then the PS4 came out to be more powerful than the Xbox one.
      Shortly after the Xbox one s and PS4 pro came out and once again, PlayStation had a vast power advantage. The thing is, Sony never and I mean never saw the Xbox One X coming the way it did. Once Xbox gained the power advantage Sony "thought" that they would take the lead back with the PS5.
      Sony probably thought that the new Xbox would at most have 8-9Tflops and 32 compute units. Once again they were proven wrong when the Series X specs were announced and that doesn't sit well with Sony.
      That's why this time they are going to go above and beyond to make sure they have the technology and horsepower throne back. They won't be blindsided by Microsoft anymore and I know this because they want to make sure they push VR in the upcoming future. VR takes a great deal of graphics power to run at a stable 1440 120fps.
      I am almost certain that PlayStation consoles will be more powerful towards mid-gen refresh in 2023-2024.

    Thank you so much for getting this out prior to launch. It has helped me massively. I’ve just ordered it in the uk from scan and hopefully it will come tomorrow. Going to pair it with a 3090FE I got just after launch. It was the Warzone benchmark that swung it for me. I’m not expecting quite the same gains as I game on an ultrawide, but I have every intention of getting a 4080 or better as soon as I can after launch. I have a use for my existing 5800x hence the purchase now rather than waiting.

    Today I ordered my 5800X3D as a last upgrade for the next 3-4 years for my old 3600 which still runs good! It`s so interesting to look back in time when a CPU was still more or less useless after 2 years, e.g from a Pentium 2 with 350MHz to a Pentium III with 500MHz.
    Today a 3600 (without X!) is still enough for playing many games and if that isn`t enough, you clock it at 4,2GHz and that`s it. Amazing!

    Id imagine the vcache will only help games that dont scale well across cores due to shared memory or poor locking. So how is the dwarf fortress performance??

    • @RobBCactive
      @RobBCactive 2 года назад

      Actually it's non-sequential RAM access patterns which exceed L3 that benefit most from larger Vcaches.
      Having more idle cores doesn't help mitigate memory stalls one bit, you already have SMT threads that can process while a thread is stalled on RAM.
      Some games won't benefit because the CPU can pre-fetch memory into cache before it's needed. Sometimes helper SMT threads running on the same core, explicitly pre-fetch memory into cache to avoid stalls, but games aren't ported to PC with much care about hardware specifics.
