@Scott nealon, in fact, meerkats are mongooses, any member of the family Herpestidae is called a mongoose, mongooses are native exclusively to Asia and continental Africa and there are no mongooses in Madagascar, there are thirty-six extant species of mongoose within sixteen extant genera: Herpestes (Asian Mongooses), Xenogale (Long-Nosed Mongoose), Atilax (Marsh Mongoose), Ophiovora (Egyptian Mongoose, Black Mongoose, and African Grey Mongoose), Cynictis (Yellow Mongoose), Galerella (Slender Mongooses), Paracynictis (Selous's Mongoose), Rhynchogale (Meller's Mongoose), Bdeogale (Bushy-Tailed Mongooses), Ichneumia (White-Tailed Mongoose), Crossarchus (Kusimanse), Suricata (Meerkat), Dologale (Pousargues's Mongoose), Helogale (Dwarf Mongooses), Liberiictis (Liberian Mongoose), and Mungos (Banded Mongoose and Gambian Mongoose).
