Mark, I really enoyed this. Ivan is such a quiet, low key man ... no fireworks but a thoughtful, observant, humble, somewhat mysterious man. One thing very evident to me is this : at the very centre of the whole Penrith operation there is great love. This is why the whole team give as they do. This is their 'secret'.
These two gents have firmly restored the game of Rugby League to top of the sporting tree in Australia, their family values and the way they behave has brought the game back from all you heard about was off field incidents, now with what they have achieved you hear about the game , the play the dedication , the family and cultural values , respecting the community
Well said. Its true. Munster great potential boom, coke incident, automatically lost respect from many Cheese, same story and the list goes on. So much potential but off field stuff ruined the legacy. Not these guys though
Ivan is such a wise man, it’s not a surprise his life is the way it is. I cant wait to get my hands on his book, I’m sure it’ll have lots of little gems of wisdom.
Oh wow thanks Mr Bouris for this amazing interview, which is one of the best I've seen for a while. Normally watch Mark's economic reviews, but this was on another level. I'm usually a Union fan, but the success of Penrith Panthers has enticed me to League. On point with the Culture which builds respect, values, etc. Have more respect for Ivan, he get's it, 💯 agree with his statement Poly kids from NZ are totally different from Poly kids in Oz. Knowing this can help bring the best out of players, other clubs and codes lack. Ivan understands how to respect his players from different backgrounds, this brings out best of them . Go the Riff 🏉
Ivan out coached the storm by taking away the height advantage of their wingers. Let them catch it and then smash them with 3 and 4 guys surrounding them every time. Master stroke.
I should know who the interviewer is, Im sure, but I do not. However, what an interview! I kept thinking how skilled he is at building rapport with the interviewees and injecting just the right mix of serious and funny to keep them relaxed and comfortable so that they can answer without any pressure but narurally and openly. Conversation was kept on a forward trajectory without anything feeling forced. Great filling and transitioning to different topics and questions...one of the best interviews Ive seen. Really great work.
This was very insightful. Long time panther fan, live a few streets away from the family and never realised how much goes on behind the scene. Great line of questions also from Mark to get this open chat going.
Thank you for this interview with the Clearys. Really enjoyed. Ivan is a really modest humble and talented person. Nathan has most of his father’s character as I can see from his interviews and the way he plays. Very proud to have a team most especially a player like Nathan with his father as a coach. Keep the success with the culture and attributes of the panthers club.
Yes both Ivan and Nathan seem very humble, down-earth people which are very good qualities to have! On a different note, the videos on the playlist on my channel titled 'Purpose of Life?' might interest / inspire some people! Anyway all the best to anyone reading this comment!
It's always so great seeing introverts and overall nice guys succeed: proving that you don't always have to be the toughest or the loudest person in the room to be the best. Having these two championing mental health, diversity, respect for their teammates (and opponents) and giving back to the community... We couldn't ask for better leaders. Another great interview Mark. Grateful the Cleary’s came on and opened up. Humble, authentic and so impressive as people let alone footballers. Respect for the Clearys, and the Panthers as a club from a Dogs fan.

What sets Ivan apart from other coaches is his conposure under pressure and his communication and relationship with the team, we saw a birdseye of that in the box last year against the broncos
@@1362pc arguably the greatest. For 4 years on the trot his team has had an answer to every question asked of them. It's unbelievable. The storm didn't do much wrong in the GF, their only problem was who their opponent was.

Ivan is not just a good technical coach but equally a brilliant people’s manager. Not many coaches can do this. Wayne Bennet, Bellamy, and Trent Robinson come to mind. I remember being at Parramatta as a young 18-year-old in 1987 just after they won their last grand final and was taken back by how complacent the senior players were at pre- season training. The hunger and commitment was gone. That would not have happened under Jack Gibson and the captaincy of Ray Price. As Ivan said, I good indicator of how a team plays on the weekend is how well and committed they train during the week, Ivan has been able to make this playing group, humble, hungry and committed year after year when many of them could quite easily rest on their Loral’s. Not easy to do.

I love that they have a set of values for the team. This sets the tone for the club. If you look at Broncos compared to Panthers, they lack discipline and values, even with their players getting drunk and getting reckless. I love the tone Panthers has set for themselves. Really well done Ivan!
I think Michael Maguire will change that.. He'll set standards, lead and stand it by them and expect the players to as well.. I'm a south's man and he did that for our club.. Best of luck to the Bronx
Saw a rare side to Ivan Cleary post match magic rd this season after a close loss to the Warriors. To me it wasn't the result but more so effort & standards. They dropped theirs that day & he was clearly livid. Body language.. was a major lesson learnt.
Crazy how Ivan only won coach of the year award 1 time the last 5 years and the year he won was 2020 and lost in GF. Glad he didn’t win this year and yet again won the GF. Such a great coach. 👏
When Mark bouris was talking about Nathan’s currency in the game it would have been mad if Nathan popped a question back to Mark and ask how would he leverage off the currency Nathan has in the game? What and how would Nathan leverage off his position? Given he has such a status in the game.
You would not meet a more honest, respectful and sensitive coach then Ivan. Just goes to show you don't need to be the stereotypical hard line coach to get success. I have heard first hand from players that Ivan has a relationship with every player on his roster. This goes beyond what happens on the field. He has an open door and people can talk to him about everything.
Warriors were crazy to let these men go. But you can see they took alot of there mana from their experiences living and playing for the Warriors. Great coach and mana throughout the whole team and club and amazingly the fans who have all bought into the same feeling.

Ray Price, Peter Sterling, Brett Kenny and those jokers were death-riding the Panthers, Big Time. Parramatta 81-83 are now a footnote. And as a Manly fan, that is heart-warming. And the rest. Not in $$$, but in culture, junior nursery, etc. People think it's just the coaches. But it much more than I mentioned. The Dogs and other teams thought that buying a couple of Panthers players would be an instant GF win. NO, there are so many parts to this Panthers success, we are 5 years ahead of the rest.
It’s hard to bring in a casual viewer and try to get them in the game and have the likes of Hayne Hoppa Mullen Carney Barba Then you show what the Clearys done for the area, the franchise and the game you will for sure grow the game

Ivan and Nathan’s journey will be remembered as one of rugby league’s greatest stories, cementing their legacy as legends.
Yes, they're going down as legends
Nathan from warriors water boy to best player in the game for 5 seasons. What a story. How legends are made.
When Warriors ditched Cleary I left as well. I still wanna know who was on that stupid board that made that decision.
I still rate Ponga higher!

They did this quite abit during the early part of the season. He's a great coach
there main plan was to make storms middle work and they did just that look at the tackle count from storms middle
And along with limiting (the little Bin Chicken) Harry Grant with the ball.
Stop his momentum and you pretty much stop Melb
So many great coaches in here lol

As a tigers fan, I'm glad Ivan left us to go back to penrith he's a much better couch than what the tigers could have given back. .
