That's because many musicians back then were real artists who knew what they were doing while the vast majority of today's musicians have a massive music industry behind them. They don't write their own songs, they don't make they're own melody, they don't even use their natural voice (autotune). All the work is done by people who exactly know how the people will react to a certain melody etc, it's all psychology to maximize sales. No art, just money.
