Absolutely. As I was telling my best friend the other day, we got more than "tea and oranges that come all the way from China.". Dude, we got our stimulus checks from China. Recently a friend died at 92, for years he had insisted on having his tombstone engraved with the following: "don't feel bad for me, I lived in the time that real songs had words and real trains had names." So that is what we did.
When you discover Leonard Cohen it changes you forever. Listening to his songs brings up feelings you didn't feel before. It moves you in ways that are hard to explain, so very deep and everlasting. Thank you Leonard Cohen for your pure genius 🙏🙏

Hello guys, I'm from Germany, a few years ago I was on a bus trip through Canada and when I reached Montreal in the evening this song played on the radio, unforgettable...
I met him at Th.St Denis - Leonard Cohen is a giant of Canadian life - his sensibilities are an inspiration. Canadians are not aware of the brilliant people who pulled the country together, but here we are!
Everything a man gets he gets from his own endeavours, he has built the world, he lays the bricks, quarries the stone, builds the machinery, builds the roads, digs for the oil, works the power stations, the list is endless. Women are passengers in that process and exploit the men, the man's lot is of endless burden. The woman's lot is to be looked after. We have as much flowery speech as we want, but it's her children not his and if you ever transgress or upset the woman, you will find this out. Men are exploited by women and that's why many of them are broken by middle age. And that is the truth
Woke up at quarter past 5 a.m. today....this song was playing in my head.....looked it up on RUclips and put it on repeat while I did my morning chores bringing in firewood , hauling buckets of water, and putting roasted vegetables in Mason jars. THANK YOU MR. COHEN , glad you had the opportunity to spend TIME with the half crazy lady by the river 💕❤ 💖
I’ve been doing the same, can’t stop playing it after not hearing it for almost a lifetime. A certain part of my life went into replay mode and the emotions were stark.
I was born in 1955 , grew up in the 1960's and missed Leonard Cohen and his song Suzanne ! But thank GOD , i found it on youtube . And now i will hear this most beautiful song till the end of my days !!!!! Mr. Edone Fleites
1968 my friends gave me Leonards album as a birthday present, they laughed and said >It´s you he sings about ... < Like so many times before we sat in my room and drank tea together listening to his songs and long, long after they left I continued listened to my song for hours in time - 16 years old I saw him first on the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 and afterwards he followed me all through my life on 7 other concerts in Paris, Berlin, Athens and 3 times here in Stockholm - it was 2013 I saw him last when he was almost 80 years. At his death I decided that this song should be played on my funeral
I was born a few years before you, even then he was only marginally heard. I was, an an ass kicking front person and sometime drum player in my band. I was of the road for a few weeks and ran into an old friend. we went to his place that was the first time i heard suzanne , it resonated.
I'm 65 now and I only discovered Leonard 2 years ago and how I ever missed him, I just do not know, he just reminds me of my hippy days, hitchhiking all through Europe, so much meaning his songs to me Kathy Belfast
I’m a 14 year old girl who randomly found this song and now can’t stop listening to it. I’m crying, it’s so beautiful. I hope everyone’s having a fantastic day and enjoying this one :)
I listened to an interview with Suzanne. She and Leonard never had sexual relationship. Though she said, "He was a very seductive man." They were very close, for how long is unclear. Leonard's father stressed reading the classics. So he was very cognizant of the powerful nature of the muse. Suzanne said, "What we had was more intimate than a sexual relationship. If we had sex, we would have lost that." This is what Leonard is articulating when he writes, "You've touched her perfect body with your mind." Today, we ridicule men with close platonic relationships with women, and we villify women. With respect to women, we suspect them of taking advantage of the man or stringing him along as a spare. This is expressed with respect to men that he must be gay, or it is an unrequited love, or he is in the 'friend zone.' This reductive attitude is a product of our simplistic attitudes about the complex nature and types of intimacy, and the sad fact that few people have read any of the classics. Yet, the muse is very real, Edie Sedgwick was a muse to Warhol and Dylan, Linda McCartney, Yoko Ono, Zelda Fitzgerald - Hemingway was close with an unamed woman all his life, and, of course, Suzanne.
Kandy Kandy First of all calling someone NUTS isn’t nice. Secondly, his wife Suzanne is not the subject of this song. Perhaps you should do your research before you insult people. The song is about Suzanne Verdal. Look it up.
I agree with all of this, and that line in Suzanne about them mutually touching each other with their minds (only) & what he said about this relation being so intimate because of its lack of sex really resonates with me right now. Not to get too personal / detailed because this is RUclips & completely uncalled for, but I was thinking about a man I relate to romantically & only see sporadically (we live on different continents) and how much stronger our relationship would become if we refrained from sex. To put in the effort and connect wholly through words (a communion of minds), rather than taking the easy option of consummating that (halfway) mental connection with physical touch...

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night beside her And you know that she's half crazy But that's why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer That you've always been her lover And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will trust you For you've touched her perfect body with your mind. And Jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He said "All men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free them" But he himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone And you want to travel with him And you want to travel blind And you think maybe you'll trust him For he's touched your perfect body with his mind. Now Suzanne takes your hand And she leads you to the river She is wearing rags and feathers From Salvation Army counters And the sun pours down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever While Suzanne holds the mirror And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that you can trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.
"Suzanne" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written, superbly sung by Leonard Cohen. It's like I can see Montreal in autumn when I listen to it (no, I can't explain it, I really don't get that one myself...)
@@fallonbeau1268 As Cohen himself put it, "”The song was begun, and the chord pattern was developed, before a woman's name entered the song. And I knew it was a song about Montreal, it seemed to come out of that landscape that I loved very much in Montreal, which was the harbour, and the waterfront, and the sailors' church there, called Notre Dame de Bon Secour, which stood out over the river, and I knew that there're ships going by, I knew that there was a harbour, I knew that there was Our Lady of the Harbour, which was the virgin on the church which stretched out her arms towards the seamen, and you can climb up to the tower and look out over the river, so the song came from that vision, from that view of the river."
Heard this for the first time in many years recently on the way back from music practice. The combination of Leonard Cohen's deep, laid-back voice, his thoughtful guitar, the soft roar of the car engine, the trees and fields and farmhouses standing still in the last light of the June evening, the moon bright in the darkening east, and just a few slender stars visible, was a very special one. One of those moments to visit over and over again. I want to travel with him, I want to travel blind...

My father in law chose this song for his funeral and it made me cry as it's been so long since I've last heard it. I found myself whispering along the lyrics. If only I'd known we liked the same music. Would have loved to know what else he listened to. Talk about it. A nice parting gift to bring this long forgotten song back into my life.

I hope things are going better for you now. we all need someone to talk to about our joy and struggles. I hope you have that someone. take care of yourself! Suzanne
I'm 17 years old this year and I treasure this, as well as songs of the old time very much. I'm glad to still be able to listen to masterpiece like this.
I'm thinking of my oldest friend, we're in our mid thirties but she told me just today that this was her mum's favourite song and that she's made this a part of the wedding ceremony for tomorrow. We grew up together, I'm representing her as her "Man of Honour" and I've never heard this song before until now.. It gave me goosebumps
It is... because it was originally written and published as a poem titled "Suzanne Takes You Down" in 1966. The man was an acclaimed poet first and foremost and only accidentally a singer when others convinced him to make an album of his poetry. It's why his lyrics are so vivid and so beautiful.
1968, my first year at University. Purchased this album and played it until it was almost worn out. Suzanne was my favourite track. Now aged 73 here in 2023, I still listen to this wonderful piece of poetry.

Some years ago I had the opportunity and pleasure to experience one of Leonard Cohen's concerts here in Norway - and to me that was a lifetime experience 🥰🎶. It was worth the travel distance big time. This song is one of his masterpieces that I appreciate the most, and despite its simplicity it appears as really soulful and warm.

And Jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He said "All men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free them" But he himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

One of the most beautiful love songs I have ever heard. Hauntingly melodic, sung passionately and lovingly. He caresses the words as he caresses her memory.m
I was about 20 and happened to go to a small party where I remember hearing this song and the girls I met there were adoring this poet and singer who I didn’t know. A very brief relationship and no more did I hear this song…. Till today. An emotional remembrance of that time which I’ve tried to forget. The tears came easily. How wonderful is this song that it can make you feel like you were right back at that party so many years ago.
I first heard Leonard in 1966 when I was 16 and I still listen to him today. He was a great poet and his early songs bring back so many memories for me.
A friend of mine, all those years ago could play Leonard Cohen perfectly on the guitar. He had an ear for sound without practising - just a natural musician - bless him. What a gift!
I am a huge fan of The Beatles and I love the work of Lennon/McCartney but Leonard Cohen's work is on another level. I just listened to his song "Ballad of the Absent Mare" and the more I get into his music again the more I know that he indeed was one of the greatest poets of all time.
I was listening from the beginning & very sad tonight. We will miss this wonderful man & his music. He was there during a special time in my life. I still have his older albums & still enjoy. R.I.P. Mr. Cohen. You brought much happiness to us.
This song reminds me of a former friend. They introduced this song to me and told me they loved me. I was very young then and a bit naive. We both changed and tread very different paths and despite how bitterly things may have ended. I still think of them often and how much they’ve taught me.
I feel this. I had a couple of really close friends on high school, but we all went on different journeys. Things ended weird between us, but I treasure everything we went through together
This was one of my wife's favourite songs when she was in her nursing training, I remember buying the album for her, it was from her that I learned to appreciate Leonard Cohen's music & poetry
I’ve thought for so long that Dylan was clearly the best musician who is really a poet, first. And no doubt he’s obv incredible. But I’ve recently gotten into Leonard Cohen and now I think there’s a certain sublimity at least in this song that surpasses nearly anything.

Recently a friend died at 92, for years he had insisted on having his tombstone engraved with the following: "don't feel bad for me, I lived in the time that real songs had words and real trains had names."
So that is what we did.

A Beautiful Memory ❤️… Hope you are doing well ✌🏼
I went looking for Leonard cohen in Montreal and never found him. I’ll need to go back 🫡
An incredible poet. One of the best, humble, sincero, a great person.
You didn't know him. He was as human and imperfect as the rest of us.
So true💛

I too was born in 1955 and was lucky enough to find Mr Cohen in tbe 70's and I like you will listen forever.

If we had sex, we would have lost that."
This is what Leonard is articulating when he writes, "You've touched her perfect body with your mind."
Today, we ridicule men with close platonic relationships with women, and we villify women. With respect to women, we suspect them of taking advantage of the man or stringing him along as a spare. This is expressed with respect to men that he must be gay, or it is an unrequited love, or he is in the 'friend zone.'
This reductive attitude is a product of our simplistic attitudes about the complex nature and types of intimacy, and the sad fact that few people have read any of the classics.
Look it up.
@@joannawolf651 He had two children with Suzanne Elrod who he never married. She was married to a friend of his.
THE BEST RELATIONSHIPS ARE NO SEX ONES
Brilliant post; thanks.

Sounds like the water in a small river, lifting the boats at the edge, rising, falling, changing rhythm, continuing, ...
Ok the tea comes from China, fair... but the oranges?
@@sheldonkerr Mandarin oranges did originate in China, apparently.
To think I could have gone my whole life without hearing this absoute treasure. I was listening to a podcast and they played a short clip of this. I was hooked. This song speaks to me.
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.
Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.
Thank you💛

"Suzanne" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written, superbly sung by Leonard Cohen. It's like I can see Montreal in autumn when I listen to it (no, I can't explain it, I really don't get that one myself...)
Why Montreal?
i know there are great artists that have sung this song.
but there is only one that should this song: leonard cohen.
If only you all were real hippies and genuine wtf
That's quite interesting. I envision Northern Michigan in the fall. The glistening water in the autumn sun for some reason.

It is... because it was originally written and published as a poem titled "Suzanne Takes You Down" in 1966. The man was an acclaimed poet first and foremost and only accidentally a singer when others convinced him to make an album of his poetry. It's why his lyrics are so vivid and so beautiful.
