  • We bring you to Lisbon, Portugal for this special Side by Side episode. The neighborhood of Belem is famous for its out-of-this-world Portuguese egg custard tart. The original from Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém is called pastéis de Belém while all others are called pastéis de nata. With a secret recipe created by the monks at the nearby monastery dating back to the 1700's, it's like stepping into a time machine when you walk into the dining room of Pastéis de Belém. Today we are in for quite a treat as that is not the only stop we are making in town. Just down the street is Manteigaria, a new hip & trendy pastry spot that has exploded the scene. Originally opening in a butter shop in downtown Lisbon, this up-and-comer now has multiple restaurants all over the country. Come along for this food adventure!

100% agree. These places were so good.
Was very enjoyable to get away for a bit, sit down, enjoy some delicious pastries and a glass of Port.
      Thanks for watching!

    Bom diaaaa Elvis!! 😀
Cool to see you in Europe bro! Man, the crunch on the egg tarts sounded sublime in both spots. You must have been buzzing off all the sugar in the desserts and the cherry liquer haha

      Tremendous experience.
The egg tarts, the cherry liquer, Portugal as a whole was awesome.
It was great being on the other side of the pond and experiencing the culture.
      Hope all is well Louie

We have to agree with you. Tart for tart, Manteigaria topped Belém for the delicate crunch and ratio to the custard. The custard at Manteigaria seemed to have more of a yolk presence than Belém. A dash of cinnamon and a glass of port or a shot of a Ginja was the way to go for us also.

Was great that two iconic spots were right down the street from one another.
Really allowed you to see which you would prefer.
Can never go wrong with the glass of port
      😉
      Thanks for watching!

The Chinese egg tart is completely different...the Chinese egg tart is not crunchy and it's too oily!
