I listened to this “Navagraha Songs - A Special Presentation” by “Sound Creed” in RUclips, several times since 19th July. It is a Team work of Ms. Jayashree Arvind - my friend & my thatha Padma Bhushan Sri K S Narayanaswamy’s (KSN) disciple- along her students. It has come out extremely well. Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar is a unique vaggeyakara. Each kriti is tough, well set pretty well planned. In Navagraha Kritis, each kriti has set in different Ragas (of course!) and set in different Thala, as well. It is said that, Dikshithat, who was also an astrologer, had made those Kritis to help one of his shishyas to overcome his “Grahapeedai”. Semmangudi thatha used to sing the particular day’s Navagraha Kriti in his concerts. But my thatha used to play Asaveri - MONDAY (Chandram Bhaja Manasa), Surutti - TUESDAY (Angaraka Aasrayamyaham), Nattakkurunji - WEDNESDAY (Budhamasrayamyaham ), Atana - THURSDAY (Bruhaspathae) AND…Yathukula Kamboji - SATURDAY (Divakara Thanujam). Bruhaspathae & Divakara Thanukam were his favourites, I should say. Until his last days, on all Thursdays & Saturdays he used to play those kritis at home. Each time, he would be in a trance and would take the listeners also along with him! I still remember that my thatha would start a new kriti for his students only after 2-4 months’ of completion of one keerthanam. Divakara Thanujam would go well beyond 5 months. Jayashree was one of his favourite students. When she got ALL INDIA RADIO Scholorship to learn under KSN (in addition to her usual veena classes in Shanmukhananda Music School, Bombay), she used to come home after her college. Thatha would make sure that I was also there to listen. Waav! Those days!! I can’t find the right words to explain those wonderful experiences of listening to good music. This “NAVAGRAHA SONGS” took me to those days. I cannot believe that the Six students of Jayashree have not met my thatha in person at all. They are well trained in his Bhani. Hats off to Jayshree!! They have rendered the Kritis in the purest form, sincerely following their Master. Sri Praveen Sparsh on the Mrudangam & Sri Chandrasekara Sharma on the Ghatam have given full support while enjoying their rendition. Such Team work will always make the presentation a success. I have heard that playing, singing or listening to Navagraha Kritis would nullify Graha Dosham and this would be an asset for those who believe in this. This rendition of Navagraha Kritis has attracted 7000 views in Two days! Meaning… Artists can elevate the listeners to a new height instead of “giving what they like”…..Expecting more from this Team.

An exceptionally well-conceived, orchestrated , sequenced and uniquely presented homage to the Navagrahas through the splendid compositions of the prolific saint-composer Shri Muthuswami Dikshitar in myriad ragas was not just a musical delight but served as our own obeisance to the Navagrahas and gratitude to the revered Dikshitar as well by virtue of the very act of listening to this divine creation spanning a little over an hour. Anugraha & SoundCreed deserve as much gratitude and appreciation for such a cherishable culmiation for us to revel in and incredible legacy for posterity as well.Earnestly and humbly appeal to you to come up with many more such presentations as meaningful and valuable contributions to our musical heritage.. As one rasika remarked this indeed would be my go-to recourse as well whenever I feel impelled to invoke the Blessings and Benedictions of the Navagrahas esp during milestones like planetary transits, Dasa/bhuktki commencements et al. Much thought and mind application must have gone into arriving at the apt format wherein a brief alapana on Veena of the underlying raga of the pertinent krithi served as preamble for the incantations by the duo of Vedic scholars extolling the particular planet in 'focus' so to say following which a preliminary opening cue on the Veena gave way to a grand and well orchestrated rendition of the krithi in immaculate unison what with the percussionists lending admirable accompaniment to the spirited vocalists. The whole team presumably are in a sense proteges and scions of the exemplary KSN school spearheaded by the gifted and dedicated mentor Vidushi Jayashree. Kudos on having evinceed such humungous rave feedbacks so shortly after the release of this post.The brief 'trailer' itself seemed to hold promise of something spectacular in the offing and prophetically so. May this be the moment of epiphany for the KSN School. Best Wishes going forth !

Magnificent is the term to describe this amazing collaboration of Muthuswami Dikshitar lovers. The voices and the instrument come together in the most harmonized manners raising the 'Bhakti' Rasa to extraordinary heights. Honestly, it is not easy to do justice to these powerful compositions left behind by the great Dikshitar. And recording it live in the outdoors calls for enormous technical skills which your sound engineers are highly capable of. Yet, we often fall a few pitfalls in such an exercise. One of them is the slightly higher volume level that we give to the electronic tampura, the veena and the percussion instruments. More often than not it is to hide the environmental noises. Yet, we should not give up. Secondly, the vocal artistes need to sing from their deep abdominal cavities to do justice to this greatest of all Indian composers. Please forgive me for being critical. It is just that I am a big admirer of your institution and all that you have set out to accomplish to further classical music appreciation. If you guys don't bring back the need to listen to such great concerts, honestly, no one else can! Keep it up. K. Hariharan, Filmmaker and Academician
