      Difference #2, Bachelor of Commerce, Major in Accounting Students would like to have a word with you. They go deep like Economics. They had to take Advanced Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Taxation, and Auditing just to be qualified for CPA programme. Note, They are just pre-requisites which means that they had to study for additional 2 years in CPA school or pursue Master of Accounting Programme just to be qualified to write a CPA exam to earn the title.

    I’m an economics major at a LAC so I don’t really have a choice between the two but I find that a lot of the more “practical” knowledge isn’t too hard to gain at least in a basic sense especially if you are able to take a couple of the basic/intro courses like accounting in addition. I was surprised how much I knew walking into my intro accounting because I already understood some basic business principles and finance concepts from my intro micro and intro macro classes (mostly intro macro).

    Economics is like the physics of social science within multiple businesses (behavior) , business is the application of service. You need both but economics is more powerful for an investor/ceo because of the wide range competition

  • @alanjyu

    A major difference between business and economics are credit requirements and flexibility. A undergraduate economics degree generally requires a completion of 30 credits, some of which are economics and some of which are mathematics including calculus 1 and 2. Business majors have more course requirements, usually 90 to 100 credits. So, you have more flexibility as an economics major. You can learn a foreign language really well. You can master a skill such as cooking which would be useful if you wanted to open up a chain of restaurants, for example. So, if you are interested in international business or entrepreneurship, economics may actually be the better option. if you have very specific goals that require you to study things outside the realm of business, I would recommend the study of economics, which gives you more flexibility to do things outside of business.
    One also need not major in business to develop business skills. You can do a minor or a certificate in business with an economics major. Or you can do an economics major and then decide to do an MBA later. There are ways to choose both. You don't just have to choose one.

      What country do you live in? Where I go to uni economics is only done as an extended major and has more core units than any standard business degree at the same uni.

    • @alanjyu
      @alanjyu 11 месяцев назад

      @@dyingslytherin4947 United states. Typically an economics degree requires between 30 to 36 hours or 10 to 12 classes in economics. That leaves you a lot of flexibility to dabble in other areas like Chinese or computer science. If you are a business major, you would have to take 20 to 30 classes in business. It doesn't mean that business is harder because you definitely aren't going to have to take calculus like you would for a bachelor of science in economics, but a business curriculum tends to have more hoops to jump through.

    • @alanjyu
      @alanjyu 11 месяцев назад

      @@aena5995 the BBA will have the most required classes, and it could be something like 90 credits. A ba or BS in a business field such as accounting or finance may be somewhere between 45 credit for a ba and 60 credits for a BS. From my experience, usually a university offers the BBA only or choice of the BS or BA.

    But now, economics field are veering away from abstract mathematics. Look at the recent presentation of American Economic Association this year. They are focusing more on the real world application of economics and at least removing mathematical fetishism of economics. The field of economics is now changing and I am happy to this initiative that they tend to focus now on the applicability of economic theory in business, government and society.

    Have to add one fact if you want to pursue the higher studies: PhD in Business (Management) is compensated much higher than PhD in Economics, especially PhD in Accounting and Finance. The Accounting PhD has an extremely strong marketability. These two can make almost CA$150K a year in Canada as a new assistant professor. On the other hand, professors in Economics make much less than professors in the business school and usually more difficult to get the tenure track position. If you really love economics, please consider a PhD in Business Economics offered in the business school instead of the department of economics.

      Me and you are in the same boat. I did dual enrollment as a senior this year. I took calculus at a university, and it was harrd. I got a B in it. In school, I always got As in math, but I never considered myself good at math. I have always just been good at school. I do not like math and do not necessarily understand it. However, I am determined to study hard when I am admitted this fall. For me I am not interested in math but in Econ. I have ordered volume of 1 of Das Capital by Karl Marx off of amazon and plan to watch lots of econ videos this summer to hopefully spark some passion in me. I say when doing math, do it for the understanding of econ not for math. I don't know about you, but I am very serious.
      Econ at its root is a social science, and I love social science (as well as history). I view it as the social science that is most likely to make money, so I am not giving up any soon.

    I think you should go into the difference between a BA and BS in Economics because I'm pretty sure that might impact students' experience studying economics. For example, you say that econ requires A LOT more math than business. However, my college (which offers a BA, not a BS) only requires Calculus 1, a basic statistics class, and one computer science class for the Econ major. According to a little research I've done, it's not out of the ordinary for undergrad econ degrees to be relatively light on math. For this reason I was under the impression that I could handle an economics degree, but your video makes econ sound much more intimidating to someone who doesn't consider themselves a math aficionado. Just something to consider. :)

      Double majors are great if you feel that you can handle the workload! With econ and business there are likely overlapping classes so getting a double major may not be too much extra work. I would also think about why you are doing it, are there specific skill sets that you get with one and not the other? My school doesn't have a business degree for undergrads but if it did I would certainly consider a double of econ and business. I would also look at the classes you would take for each and make sure they are different enough that you are getting new skills by doubling. I hope this helped. Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Hey Calvin, I'm currently an engineering student that is going through the process of changing majors Econ is one of my top two. The reason I'm hesitant to go into Econ though is because the only reason I'm changing from Engineering is because I couldn't get through the Engineering Math 3 (Vector Calculus). I've looked at my schools major and they require calculus 1 & 2 but not calc 3+ do you think I will have calc 3 in my higher level econ classes and do you think since I struggled with Vector Calculus I should not change over to Econ?

      @clytemnestra 4 года назад

      I’m still currently in the process of completing my economics degree but you shouldn’t worry about not being able to get into Calc 3. The most advanced calculus I’ve encountered is having to take a partial derivative (which my professor taught us on day one and 100% didn’t expect us to know beforehand) and also knowing your stuff in regard to basic derivatives from Calc I (Calc II seemed most helpful because you encounter more complication versions of Calc I problems,, but I didn’t do well at all in Calc II and am fine). Any math past having to take a partial derivative becomes important for grad school purposes but economics departments seem to generally be very transparent about prerequisites. There are definitely advanced undergrad classes that may require linear algebra but those are among the many you can choose for the advanced classes to complete the major (at least as far as I know).

      @Eric-zl1kn 4 года назад +2

      Hey, your decision in choice of major should largely be determined by HOW you want to invest but overall the choice to buy real estate as an appreciating asset should be a thought independent of your college major. Now if you're looking into becoming a realtor as a profession I'm involved in real estate, currently a mortgage processor studying economics, international business and real estate at SDSU since many of the classes at my college overlap but you don't need a degree to get into real estate per say (at least not immediately). If your interest is being a broker, take a 3 course class either with your university or with a community college (if you're not enrolled or under 18) so when you are 18 you can take the real estate sales exam. Having a background in real estate can open a lot of doors in terms of wealth building and sometimes if a company is interested, however rarely, in oversight on acquisitions. You're going to have to find out the qualifications for the brokers exam in your state it usually requires a couple years of sales experience so you can either attempt to be a salesperson part-time however it requires you to be extremely flexible and marketable. You can also do what I'm doing which is be involved in a brokers office for a couple years to be considered experienced with my license as well as taking the required courses for the brokers exam which are very closely related to general business courses (legal aspects of real estate and real estate finance) and some economics (appraisal and real estate finance) however it's closer to business as the real estate courses tend to be more conceptual without an in-depth look but rather an outline on general application good luck!

    I don't agree with the first difference. Econ models and econometrics are very practical if you are gonna measure impact from one variable to another (Fed funds rate over exchange rate, for example) or even predict things (exchange rate or gdp). It's a matter of what you're applying it to, but econ it's pretty damn practical.

    Hi, I’m heading to USC as a Econ major in the fall. Ive never taken calculus (know nothing about it, therefore I’m irrationally afraid of it) so do you think I’m behind other Econ students for not taking it? Is there something I should do? Thanks so much

    • @calvinraab8798
      @calvinraab8798  4 года назад +8

      First of all congratulations on your acceptance to USC! I go to UCLA so we are now rivals haha, but USC is a great school!! I don't personally know what the USC Econ major course requirements look like but I imagine it looks similar to UCLA's. If you have not taken calculus before then you will definitely have to take it at USC. I would just make sure you are not taking any courses that require calculus knowledge before hand, although I doubt you would even be able to sign up for those classes because calculus will be a pre-req. I wouldn't worry about getting into a class and not knowing calculus and needing to know it because you will likely take calculus right away when you get there. As far as preparation is concerned, if you are worried about these classes you can start preparing for them. What is amazing about calculus is how much great information there is online, calculus videos on RUclips basically got me through calculus. I would highly recommend starting to learn some calculus in preparation for the class. Personally, before I started taking calculus courses I worked my way through Khan academy calculus videos and that really helped me. I would also consider looking at which calculus book the calculus courses use at USC and getting that. If you get started this summer learning calculus (with the online resources it really isn't that hard) you will be good to go. Wishing you all the best and if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me. Thank you!

These people who study math are data experts where as business people are completely worthless. The fate of a business degree holder is either to be a boomer boss or to be a middle man who is no longer needed unless they spend 10+ years climbing up the organization. Elon Musk, Buffet, etc. all studied econ. Business is actually a bad degree and these that study it are not CEOs but middleman like CFOs, controllers, COOs and have to start out with a garbage salary and work their way up. If your program isn't studied by Asians it is a worthless degree.

    Some of this may be true i guess, but there is no such thing as a "business major". you always specialize in something related to business, and that is when you dive deep. In order to specialize you have to be introduced to everything like you said, so you know what you like and you can actually dive deep into that. I would not say that business is very surface level. Plus you took business administration, which is more about management compared to other specializations like finance, which is why there was less math courses for you.

    • @calvinraab8798
      @calvinraab8798  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment! Agreed! A concentration does allow you to dive deeper. I know for me everyone was business administration then we had a choice of 6 concentrations. Although I will mention the concentrations don't dive as deep as one would with a bachelors in said concentration. So a business degree with a concentration in economics doesn't dive as deep into econ as someone with an econ degree would. Thanks for commenting! :)

      Thank you for watching and commenting! Economics is actually not a business major and there are key differences between them as I discuss in the video. Economics is considered a social science and very rarely will the major fall under the majors within a business school. For instance, I attend UCLA and economics falls under the "College of Letters and Science" and not under our business school. Although, I will admit that during an econ degree you will take many business classes and cover many business topics, it is not a business major. And the "business" that I am comparing it to is the general business administration major that is taught at most universities although the business major does fall under multiple different titles. And the general business admin degree essentially a major called management. But both Econ and Management are business degrees just like accounting or finance.

      Double degree? How's it from your experience?

      @@kennethjulio2572 hard.. Very hard.. Although they teach courses that are inter related the difference of application is quite evident. The other requires you to apply mathematics in a macro and micro level and the (bsba major in Marketing management) requires to be participative and focuses more on the study of consumer behavior which is fun.. In a simple term economics is stressful and the other is fun. Imagine having to switch classes couple of times in a single day 😂😂😂.. But I do hope that having 2 majors could help me in the future. I'm quite scared honestly, economics and business administration graduates don't usually get the job they really dreamed of compared to a graduate of accountancy.

    My school offers a Business Administration or Business Economics. I don’t know which one I should go for. I’m really good at math and want to make business eventually
