Remember him playing at Rohstofflager in Zürich Early December 98ish. Banger party, danced my ass off, real indutrial club, dark, grimey, Claude with his 4 decks, a 15m high steel silo in the corner. The air was so sweaty it was difficult to light up cigs and joints. Danced the night trhrough like a madman. In the morning i left the club and found myself in winterwonderland: 30cm of fresh snow, huge snowflakes falling down, everything totally quiet. The pure opposite of the party. Great times.
I experienced Claude Young in 1998 in Belgium at the first edition of BunkTek in a hangar of a former military base. I remember the metal plating of the hangar clattering with every beat when I took a chill outside. His style is in sharp contrast with today's techno stars. Claude was hunched over his 3 technics decks, being as physical as possible with his vinyls, his hand flying over the crossfader constantly. Those where the days! 🤘👊
i used to go to voodoo aged 16 on my own. went about 6 times solo over about 4 years. i was so deeply into the music buying vinyl being on £30 a week YTS job. none of my mates would go ao i would go it alone. mostly when it was above club 051
+thomas scouse Above 051 was at Clear. Still probably my favourite venue for Voodoo looking back. The UV lighting in that place made it something completely separate from reality.
+thomas scouse nice one thomas fair play to u. record shopping in Liverpool used to be decent, Probe, 3 Beat, that one at the top of Bold Street by the bombed out cathedral..
I heard him once playing at "space place" Frankfurt in 2000...that rough cutting and backspinning and he Got really nutz that night... 🤣🤣🤣never forget that night... great style! Real OG 🤗
I was the glass collector on this night. I got the job because I needed money to help through Uni. I was a regular at Voodoo anyways. I didn't make any money, I didn't collect many glasses... just ended up getting trashed with me mates... they did pay me but I'd already spent my earnings on the dancefloor. Cheers Scotty and Brian ;-) I nearly got dumped out of Uni because I always worked the all-nighters, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.... sometimes Sunday if it was a bank holiday. My head was a mess, got to meet a lot of the DJ's like, best job ever.
ledge! miss those spicy old voodoo nights, especially when Clarkie was on, there's a voodoo night happening in Liverpool soon, sold out instantly but there's a waiting list.
can't remember your name Dude, but if You are or were Mates with a Canadian Dude called Heath, then Me, U Heath & some others went to the Orbit Together. I was part of the Furniture in Voodoo, & Instantly All Over The Show.
love claude youngs choppy scratchy techno style thing. DJz don't seem to spin em like that so much nowadays. some great tunes on here: advent, planetary assault systems, jeff mills etc all given the ruthless treatment:-)
True funk is the microscopic difference between machine like "tightness" and a little bit of "sloppy", People talk about how tight the JBs were, but they were human not machines, there were always imperceptible bits of "sloppiness" (funkiness) in James Brown recordings. Jeff Mills, Claude Young , Dave Clark know where the funk is - it’s in the mistakes, its life, it's full of mistakes. Listen to Billie Holiday she is almost always either in front of or behind the beat, pushing or pulling the Rhythm, there is a comments below about swing, this is swing, this is funk. +Johnty Del Monte I could be wrong, but I remember this at Clear (which makes no sense with the basement comment). I was jolted out of dancing several times during a particular Claude Young set there and listening through now I'm sure it was this one. Voodoo went back to Le Bateau a year or so later I think? To be fair, '95 onwards is a bit hazy for me, if you know what I mean... ;)
+theridiida almost positive this would have been Clear as it was 97. My first Voodoo was summer 96 at it was Le Bateau then it moved to Clear for a good year or two before going back to Le Bateau for another stretch. That's how I remember it, but as you say, details are sketchy!
I think I was at this party - I remember sort of bumping into Margie Clark and my mates telling me who it was. I was like 17 or something. Definitely saw Claude Young at least once or twice at Voodoo.
+wdirtymonkey think Margi Clarke went a fair bit, certainly saw her a few times. I didn't go to this night, I just know the mix from my mate having bought it on tape (remember them?!) from behind the bar. I remember reading in mixmag or sommat, one of the nights Claude Young played at Voodoo he stuck £100 behind the bar so everyone could have a drink.. Not that many ppl drank alcohol in there 😂
May as well listen to a CD otherwise. Techno is more analogue. Perfection smells, manufactured crap. McDonald’s vs Steak, give me steak. Burnt bits n all.

love Claude and defo love Jeff, don't get techno sets like these anymore !!!!!!! crying shame cos I went um all !!!!!
thats the way they mixed back then. never smooth but always had a live feel to mix. its all too smooth and pretty these days
Totally. It had a real improvised, kinetic feel to it. It's why I fell in love with techno in the 90s.
For the turntables set - it is as smooth as possible. Claude Young had a sync button in his head!!! Amazing
Its all abaut cutting and going with the Flow fukking fast. It has much more personalaty... 🖖🏽

Really? don't think so lar. It was @ Clear at the time, just down from the 051 and I heard this set too. One of us is wrong, ha ha ha...!!
Voodoo moved from La Bateau in 95/96? But was deffo @ Clear from 97 onwards, I spent most weekends there back in the day 🙂.
