  • Choosing the right equipment for your property projects can be a daunting task. Recently, a viewer asked why a track loader might be better for major earthwork jobs compared to a wheel loader, leading me to create this initial guide that is posted on our website. We’ll explore the key factors to consider when selecting equipment, covering everything from identifying your needs to understanding the advantages and disadvantages of different types of machinery. In this video, I give a few thoughts that came to mind. Here is a link to an article I wrote

Thanks Kevin. I appreciate the feedback very much. Looks like I need a track loader more than the Avant right now. I still have a lot of heavy earthworks to do on my place.

    Hi Kevin,
I'm from Westfield, MA. I have serious problem with American Common Persimmons. They fail due to root rot. My backyard has 2 brooks and some wet area. The soil is very dense with very poor drainage. During dry summers persimmons are thriving , but during wet summers - leaves changing colors from green to yellow and even fell to the ground. 2 trees perish completely in august 2023 and other 2 trees didn't woke up after winter. I dig them out and found 90% of roots rotted.
I have only one Idea: To take 55 gal drum and cut it on 2 or 3 pieces (also, to cut out bottom of the drum). To use drum pieces in order to rise trees above ground level for 1 foot or more.
I know your property has a lot of water and you are growing persimmon trees. Maybe you can give me advice how to solve this problem.
    Best Regards,
    Dmitriy

      Hi Dmitriy,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having with your American Common Persimmons. Root rot can be a major issue, especially in areas with poor drainage.
Given your situation with dense, poorly draining soil, raising the trees above ground level could definitely help. Your idea of using cut 55-gallon drums to create raised planting areas is creative and could be effective. Here are a few additional suggestions to consider:
Raised Beds: Instead of just the drum pieces, you could construct larger raised beds using wood or other materials. This would allow for better root spread and improved drainage. When creating the raised beds, be sure to take the soil from an area to create a drainage spillway to redirect the water away from the raised beds. Make sure the raised bed soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter.
Amending Soil: Work on improving the soil structure around your planting area by adding organic matter such as compost, peat moss, and perlite. This can help improve drainage and aeration.
Drainage Solutions: Consider installing French drains or other drainage systems around your persimmon trees to help divert excess water away from their root zones during wet periods.
Mounding: If constructing raised beds is not feasible, you can plant your trees on mounds of well-draining soil. This method involves piling soil into a mound and planting the tree at the top, which can help with drainage.
Additionally, it's important to note that waterlogged soil becomes anoxic and anaerobic, changing the microorganisms in the soil. This can lead to conditions that are unfavorable for the roots and can exacerbate root rot. Ensuring good drainage and aeration can help maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms in the soil.
On our property, we also deal with a lot of water, but we've had success by creating raised planting areas and ensuring good soil drainage. We mulch heavily and ensure that our trees are not sitting in waterlogged soil. It’s crucial to monitor the moisture levels, especially during the rainy season.
I hope these suggestions help you save your remaining trees and succeed with future plantings. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.
      Best Regards,
      Kevin

If you had just got that property exactly the way it is now, which machine would you buy first?

Hi @vaughnburrows! Thanks for your question. If I had just acquired the property exactly as it is now, the first machine I would invest in would be the Avant 860i multifunctional mini loader, affectionately known as the Green Machine. This versatile piece of equipment can handle a wide range of tasks, from moving heavy materials and digging to lifting and transporting. Its telescopic hydraulic boom is particularly useful for getting materials over obstacles, and the compact design allows it to maneuver easily around the property without causing damage. The Green Machine’s ability to accommodate various attachments makes it an invaluable tool for efficiently managing and maintaining the property.
However, this is a very difficult question because I still have a lot of heavy earthworks to do on this property and on the new property where the excavator and track loader would be needed. These machines are essential for larger projects like digging ponds, trenches, and moving substantial amounts of soil and rock. Ultimately, the best choice depends on the specific needs and future plans for the property.

How heavy are the track loader and excavator? You don't need a CDL until 26,000 lbs combined weight. An F-250 class truck stays under 10,000 lbs gross weight, leaving 16,000 for the trailer. I think trailers of that size weigh about a ton, leaving you with 7 tons legal payload on the trailer.

The track loader alone is 13,190 lbs without attachments or accessories.
The excavator alone is 19,145 lbs without attachments or accessories.

@@GrowingABetterTomorrow ok, those are pretty heavy. They changed the weight limits a few years ago. You might be able to move the track loader with forks, second trip for attachments, but it'd be close and the excavator is right out.
Unless you're using them for agriculture, there's an exemption for that. Lots of farmers use loaders, but you'll need to have a good explanation for the excavator. Sounds like you have one, but I'm not the audience for that.
If you haven't already, search for "NY DMV covered farm vehicles", that should get you to the exemption.
