Majority of people could’ve used Lana’s debut in order to talk about the mistreatment that other mixed and non-Asian idols got, but no, they publicly crucified an innocent woman and watered down the criticism to “YOURE NOT ASIAN WAHHH”. And they swear they’re not koreaboos lmao
If Babymonster debuted 4 or 5 years ago then they would've been an instant hit group for the masses but them debuting this definitely shows on how uncreative and uninspiring thier sound and concept is
I'm half-Korean and I almost forgot abt the whole Lana thing. All I remember is that I was defending her with my life cause I knew damn well a majority of the people that had problems with her not being Korean weren't Korean themselves... Whenever the discussion of what is kpop/who can be an idol comes up the first question I always ask is "Are the songs being sung in Korean?" followed up with "Are you fine with fully japanese/chinese/etc idols?" The amount of times people have responded "oh but they actually look Korean" to that second question has caused irreversible damage to my mental wellbeing 😭
I think I blocked out the whole diss track thing from my memory but honestly I can't say I would've handled that any better cause if my memory serves me a little bit right, people were accusing her of being racist and whatnot along with the kboo accusations.
admittedly i was dogging that girl out bad fjjdjdd equal parts the song being bad and her performance being lackluster + the idea of her being an idol. i forgot about the racism thing too but i believe it was from a comment she made about her/her parents eyes. i dont remember the exact quote, but i think thats what it was about
Also Lana is half Slavic half Tatar (indigenous people of some parts of Russia). Tatars belong to Turkic ethnic group, they are historically affiliated with Mongols and Central Asia, their religion is Islam. Trust me if you call them white or Russian/slav, they will not be happy to hear that

heavy on babymonster because we didn’t get 1 music show stage?! like you could have gave us 1 inkigayo stage that’s all we needed and a monday debut would have helped as well i could go on..
3:40 YG to me has always been that TV show or anime that doesn’t like fan theories and actively feels threatened by them. And as result constantly change their plots and narratives to avoid being figured out subsequently dissolving into a nonsensical mess…you know like Pretty Little Liars? YG has a tendency to create GGs to compensate for whatever criticism the gg they are currently receiving gets: 2ne1 was dynamic, to this day KPops best performers, and groundbreaking…but YG thought they weren’t pretty and they got a lot of flack for their visuals. So enter BlackPink, they can rap, execute some genuine bangers, and most importantly to YG at the time- they are pretty. But…they receive criticism for their performance skills, draw controversy, are discredited as Instagram models or influencers rather than artist, and are often accused having lack luster vocals. YGs answer: BabyMonster, they are visuals, can sing, are media trained, and are good performers…except oops we forgot how competitive the gg market is now and we no longer hold the same amount of cultural relevancy we assumed we did when we gave them a mid song.
the failure of many foreign idol projects is very important to me because none of them had the same conception or reason for being there yet they were all hit with koreaboo allegations from non (East) Asian fans... It always gave "Stans want to infantilize/sexualize/overall dehumanize East Asian people" to me and having the blackies and White folk in the mix messed that up for them. It was always weird
I was DEEP into kpop during the whole Lana thing and I remember hating on her so much. (Thankfully I didn't have social media back then) And then I watched Chuang2020 where she was a contestant so I kinda got to know her and I suddenly felt SO bad for the way I treated her. She was nothing but hard-working and friendly. It definitely taught me alot about keeping my mouth shut about people who haven't done anything bad💀 There's enough people who do horrible things I can focus my hater energy on
sooo much of the punching down on lana as a koreaboo is a way for fans to self soothe and prove to themselves that they arent koreaboos. if you can choose someone to target, you can feel better about getting by with your own strange behavior. the truth is lana was living the fantasy of MANY kpop fans deep down shite music and all but they would never admit it. she just had the confidence to try and make it work really.. kpop has been on the trajectory of increased international representation for years and years and being an international fan kicking and screaming about "protecting it" does the opposite and makes you seem like an orientalist koreaboo... anyways loved the vid as always aja 🌟
i would give Anda an honourable mention here too. i have faith that Touch would have done well if it was released now, but unfortunately people couldnt handle the blatant lesbian themes at the time. Mastering and Moonlight are slightly more experimental sounding and Mastering has a more sultry sound that WAS OVERLOOKED. and then she released What You Waiting For, said she was preparing to release an album, and YGX has had her locked up in that basement since [Seungri is the root of all evil]. i NEED her to come back, i have been shriveled up on the ground STARVING for more Anda since like 2019 **i should also clarify that i kmow she had more music prior to Touch and Mastering, so the issue might not have been with the time of her debut per say, but idk im just a girl
Did anyone see Jennie's Snowman cover? She sung Snow nicely but Snowman... She was singing in cursive and it just didn't sound very good 😭 no hate i swear! Her voice has sounded better. I really liked her cover for that one song from Tangled. (I think it's called "where my life begins" or something. Idk but it's one of my fave Disney princess songs.) Also can we agree UHSN had so much potential to be an official group. Their song Popsicle was an actual bop! Miss those girls sm and i hope they're doing well. 😭
2:55 HOT ISSUE 😢😭 Definitely worth a mention as well cause i feel like had they debuted after peak covid with the possiblity to promote tfeir mysic they would've fared muchh better
i actually liked take the wheel when it came out, despite the poor mixing (thx zsunder for trying to save it lol). popsicle by uhsn is saur good. my only gripe with them back then was the lack diversity. like 7/10 yt girls (6 europeans). i wanted to see at least one blk girl fr😭
K-pop fans reaction to Baby Monster's debut was so exaggerated, they acted like they had never heard a YG song before and never seen cringe lyrics in a K-pop song before, please bfr and plus I saw a lot of hate directed at Pharita like?? What this girl even did? lol
Deadass and they want to pretend they were just criticising the girls and yg as if giving a tweet 40k likes abt a lie on pharitas life is just "criticism"
There's songs with more cringy lyrics that makes no sense like aespa drama but ofc "remember me, sting like a bee" is literally the worst lyric in the history of music.
They wouldn’t have reacted that way if it was mid but not also a repeat of the same uninspired formula that’s been used by the company for over a decade
@@sanaintheskythough i know we're talking about lyrics, i think what let aespa get away with cringey lyrics are the vocals and production. With how bare and minimal Batter up is, the lyrics are bound to be upfront

it pisses me off that lana was chased off the industry even tho she had a cute little but a few years later ppl simply turn a blind eye from GABBY?? from flopswan???? whats up with that
i unironically like get up and popsicle. like they're cute and fun. blackpink and twice who lmao edit: hollup lemme elaborate. legit when kaachi settled on their english/spanish/korean language mix it was so great, like they made something of their own and it felt like legit kpop, but with a twist!! they're a kpop fusion group let it BE!!! kuuchinators rise up
i remember only a bit of the discourse around lana bc i was still probably in middle school and only used yt as some kpop plug but frankly i always felt iffy around white/wasian idols bc i viewed kpop as a platform for full asians and other poc mainly and they’d rarely be that skillful to me (no shade and now i don’t feel the same way, as long as you’re talented but obv that’s not a priority in the industry in comparison to visuals). this said 1. i’m not korean just sea 2. people that critiqued her and her coming off as a koreaboo (don’t know of the diss track you mentioned though) probably weren’t either. i’d say it was simply valid to judge her for the mediocre music and skills.
So, the deal with Lana is that like most Wasians in kpop (🤔 I think she might be mixed), she isn't a good singer and her dancing skills are mediocre. However, her Eurocentric features helped her debut and she almost won a music show. This created a lot of controversy because many people felt that someone like Lee Michelle, who has the talent but was not supported because she is blasian, deserved it more. I don't think Lana deserves the hate she received. It's not her fault that the system was biased in her favor. Allegedly, she also liked comments saying that colorism is not real, which only added fuel to the fire. However, in my opinion, the anger should have been directed towards the system rather than a new artist who didn't create it.
omg the part about her liking comments i remember too. i dont think it was her directly, probably just an account manager who was going through and hearting comments without really reading them. i've done that in the past fjdjsjdj i'll come back to the comment and be like "OH GIRL...lemme unlike this"
but yes i agree, the way she was perceived racially definitely gave her a boost that isn't afforded to other idols. it shouldnt have been directed toward her (again, a symptom of stan culture but mostly misogyny). i think that comment part + her saying something about her eyes may have fueled the hate moving toward her
The western music industry has typically ignored artists of Asian descent. This is why many of these kids who live in the U.S. and Canada have to go to South Korea to pursue their dreams. White singers have opportunities in their own countries of origin and can try getting famous there, with a goal being to eventually perform in Korea. I think when white singers in particular try to jump start their career in Korea, it gives trying-to-meet-your-male-faves vibes, which could lead to jealousy from international fans.

many funny social experiments happen there

and thats where it began but we lost the plot very quickly. i dont think we'll ever have a productive conversation
