    One of the reasons why I really like your review (and I think Pitchfork and Fantano reviews are being panned) is because I think you're really inclined to engage with the music. Both with this record and TTPD I found that you are invested in what the music is trying to accomplish (something which I think the other mentioned reviewers have long left behind for more digitally riveting commentary).

      @inkwisitive 2 месяца назад +18

      Well, fantano didn’t even address it so it’s hard to compare.
      I personally think he was a bit harsh, but totally get that you shouldn’t need to know anything about an artist’s personal life to legitimise the music more, it could make a difference to superfans but the album should stand on its own.

    • @leaving_
      @leaving_ 2 месяца назад +34

      @@inkwisitive Agree that the album should stand on its own! However, the whole album discusses the exact subjects of several diagnoses, fear of her son's future, not being believed and treated like a hysteric only for Fantano's review to compare these lyrical concepts (not the lyrical quality, which he also criticises separately i.e: Dog Years) as being equivocal to a cringe, insufferable female lead in a coming of age movie. That's just not engaging with the album as a reviewer should.

    Halsey exists in a weird category for me, where I only occasionally like the execution of their ideas but I can't help rooting for them regardless. In a pop landscape that can sometimes feel overly safe, I admire that they're at least taking big swings, even if they don't all pay off.

    It feels like you went out of your way to understand the album here. That automatically makes this a much more sensible review than Fantano's
    I'm sorry it's probably an over-stated comment at this rate, but I just can't handle the utter disappointment behind that review that he genuinely has no excuse for. This is legit refreshing, even if I wasn't big on the album myself. Kudos, Mark.

    I appreciate this review despite falling on the entire opposite end of the spectrum- I love this album very very much- but I’m happy you met it were it was and engaged with it on that plus knowing your previous relationships to Halseys other works you were meeting them at the place you should and it makes sense to me you’d be a bit mixed on it.! Thank you even though I disagree entirely on Dog Years 😂

    As someone who connected very immediately and strongly with The Great Impersonator, thank you for this. Unlike those two reviews that shall not be named, this feels representative of the album I listened to, even if our experiences and emotional responses were entirely different. It's clear you've taken the time to understand what the ambitions are and engaged in good faith, even if the execution and artistic sensibilities aren't for you.
    I do think the album has kind of fallen victim to its own marketing success. It feels like the photoshoots may have misrepresented the concept by creating an expectation that each song is meant to be a 1-to-1 artistic tribute rather than a more general pastiche of the sounds that have inspired her over the years. It's also why the responses have been so polarising. One side is approaching it on a conceptual level (or at least their idea of it based on marketing) and judging how well it pulls off the musical impersonations. For the other side, the point is Halsey's existential journey, so we weigh up the storytelling and emotional depth. For me, I don't really care whether she sounds like Tori or Kate Bush or whoever, because I'm too busy being emotionally devastated.

  • @camf4962

    i've only heard bits and pieces of this project and i've never been a halsey fan, but i do care about music writing (speaking of liz phair, there's been some really bad writing published about this album) in general, so i was looking forward to your review. i think your recent videos on critical "punching bags" have been thoughtful, comprehensive, and focused on the work itself without losing or getting lost in the context, and this one is no exception
    honestly, some of your criticisms here actually make me want to listen to the album when i probably was never going to. i think halsey's bluntness, tumblr text post lyricism, theatricality etc are sort of secondhand embarrassing to a lot of listeners (...including me), but their work has had these defects for so long that it almost seems like her creative ethos, and maybe an album about their pain and mortal fear are the right place for that. pain is embarrassing! and amateurish musical cosplay appeals to the trollish part of me that hates musical idolatry. idk, i'm talking out of my ass, but after watching this video i'm definitely more interested in a halsey project than i've basically ever been

      its very interesting to listen to.. and some lyrics are quite great
      Its sad that its an exercise of "oh... that sounds like (artist) but Halsey sings.. funny haha" everything becomes a template with Halsey singing over instead of being something made to combine Halsey personality and those inspirations
      aiming at homage but ending up in rip off hurts the album so much. Her 2021 album was great and full of personality, so this is quite a dissapointment.

    I think reason the reason some reviewers are confused about this Album is because of how it was marketed. Because people got the impression that she was supposed to be impersonating particular artists. But if you look at the trailer, it's very clear that impersonating different decades. And in order to impersonate different decades, you need influences from artists of different decades. Halsey's Instagram impersonations have inadvertently skewed her intentions about the album.

  • @GenZComicReviewer

    An interesting piece of lore that is when halsey was a teen they raised $45,000 for a child with cancer. They raise the money by creating a song about how the cancer has affected the little girls life. So it's interesting seeing her cover the topic from a more personal perspective.

  • @brokengirrafe
    @brokengirrafe 2 месяца назад +26

    I think one flawed perspective many modern reviewers have (possibly a remnant of the AVGN/NC era) is that writing a good negative review is much harder than writing a good positive one. if you already have low expectations from a certain artist and the consensus is already confirming your bias, it's easy to join the pile on and just say it stinks without delving deeper into the material. I'm still a fan of Fantano, but it's been obvious for a while now that his negative reviews pale in comparison with the yellow flannels from a writer's perspective. perhaps he feels a sense of obligation to talk about these albums since he is the biggest figure in modern music criticism, perhaps it's a sign of burnout, idk, but the Halsey review is definitely a low-point for him.
    between this and the Katy Perry video, I feel like Mark's been bucking this trend quite successfully, because not only is he great at discussing the music itself, but also the cultural context behind it. after all, you can't talk about music, movies and art without the culture.

I think that it's a completely fine thing to say that Fantano has gone completely off the rails. I have just viewed many of his recent tweets and responses to his Halsey backlash on Twitter, and to say that it is UNHINGED is an understatement. I don't know how many critics I know or if you have a personal connection or any thing of some sort to Fantano, but I wanted to get the word out about the dire situation that I feel needs to at least be addressed in some sort.

    I was feeling quite mixed about this album but couldnt put it into words and wow this review really hit the nail on the head. i feel this album was WAY too mess, i love the idea of Halsey opening up about how difficult their life has been the past few years but i feel like it got lost in the impersonation stuff (not to mention that alot of the impersonations were unsuccessful) i agree fully that they should have impersonated ppl that were more their style like liz phair i feel like that would have just been easier on them. i also think the that halsey has never really been the best lyricist and songs like dog days suffer greatly for that

    • @ttarquez
      @ttarquez 2 месяца назад +2

      it has to be noted that each songs on this album is inspired by multiple artists, not just a one which she was impersonating to countdown to her album release as an album rollout so that can be implied that each songs will not be intended to sound exactly like specific artists. for me, who is really raving this album, i felt that this album promotion was cool and intriguing but it kinda misled some audiences.
      the actual concept of the album is that she is impersonating how she would be like and how her music would sound like in the different era of music and wondering about how her life would possibly be during that time and if she would still be in such traumatic situations.
      (i’m so sad you despise dog years for its songwriting since it is my most favorite song on the album lyrically.)

    I’m glad you’re always thorough and respectful with how you talk about music. I disagree with you as I like the album and two of my favorites were your least favorites. Dog Years is my new favorite song of the year and is absoltuely harrowing for me. It gave me more Shirley Manson than PJ Harvey but I love it. However, while I disagree strongly with what you said about it, I am glad that you gave the album a chance. I also want to mention that I love Lonely is the Muse but as a fan of Evanescence it doesn’t sound anything like Amy. It reminds me of something else but I can’t love what’s You make a point about Liz Phair and other artists she could emulate. I’m glad you were respectful for the most part and wished her the best. It’s annoying how some people missed the point of the album so much. Idk. Thanks for your review.

That being said, some of my favorite songs are the ones you did not like 😂 Arsonist, Lonely is the Muse, and Dog Years. It probably helps that I didn't expect any of those songs to sound like their inspirations.

    Spun this in full a couple of days ago, and I thought it was really compelling, both in the production getting a little more varied and weirder and in the lyrical content getting much more visceral and personal. There are definitely some misses, and it runs longer than it should, but I was never bored. Not that I've heard enough to know for sure, but I'd be ready to call this a career best for Halsey.

      That's the thing, the text and subtext of her last 4 albums isn't trying to be relatable. It's messy moralistic arguments about high class dating, wine spilled melodrama, a massive following/platform, and just Taylor Swift's celebrity apparatus and what that means to be a successful woman in the media.
      Sure she'll find an audience that finds it relatable, but on songs like Dear Reader, she deliberately pushes against that. You shouldn't find personal resonance in Taylor's messy decisions.
