Very nice walkthrough with the look development. The reference looks so good and you managed to get incredibly close to it! Thanks btw for the mini shout out ;) I completely agree on the film profiles and the amount of tweaking needed. And sadly from the tons of film stocks they have I only found a handful to be actually useful.
That is such a great overview of the plugin, thank you! I appreciate your point of view as a professional colorist. The usual review of Dehancer goes like "Here's the grain, let's use it at max. And here's the Expand panel, I don't know what it does, I'll leave it." 😉 Thanks!
Thank you for your lovely comment, Jakub! I did my best to share an informed opinion based on my experience and Dehancer's own instructions on how best to utilise the plugin. I'm so glad that's come across. Thanks again!
Thank you for the clear and fantastic video as always. Actually, following your example, I decided to switch today from using 2499 DRT or ODT in Davinci Intermediate to using the Arri LUT C3 to 709 method. Could you explain why you used ODT for this video? I would also love it if you could review the Contour that I’m using, just like you did with Dehancer. It’s early, but Merry Christmas!
Thank you for your lovely comment, Duhyun! That's great to hear. I find that Arri's LogC3 technical LUT provides much better rendering of skin tones compared to Resolve's DaVinci Wide Gamut/Intermediate CST alternative so this workflow has been my go-to for a while now. The reason why I've used an IDT and ODT in this video is because I wanted to use Dehancer in a DaVinci Wide Gamut/Intermediate workflow. Dehancer does not support Arri LogC3 in a scene referred workflow - only DWG & ACEScct. This way Dehancer does not apply a transform to Rec.709 and it only imparts a creative look. Hope this makes sense. I'm afraid I don't have Cullen Kelly's Contour tool. It looks great! But I've accumulated so many other DCTLs and plugins that I don't feel the need to invest in any new ones for the time being. I'm sure Cullen himself and other creators will create review videos about Contour soon! I hope you have an amazing festive season as we enter December! ☺
That's a great question! The way I would go about it is the following: I would grade the project in a scene-referred workflow (DWG, ACEScct, LogC3, whatever works for you) outputting to Rec709 Gamma 2.4. Once the project is completed and signed off, I would deliver the Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 deliverable and then I would create a second version of the timeline. In the second version, I would change the ODT to output to DCI P3 instead of Rec.709 Gamma 2.4. Then you would need to book time in a DCI projection room where you can see your grade in DCI P3 and make adjustments to the grade as necessary.
