    Roman land of Roman sands and Roman sons
    As I watch the sun sink down
    On the blood-red edge of the blood-red town
    There are shadows for sale
    On the edge of town
    On the edge of the night
    Is a darkness seen
    From the side of the night
    And the winds blow round this sleeping town
    This sleeping town
    This Roman land of Roman sands and Roman sons
    And it seems to me that when I close my eyes
    All the lights in the world
    Go out
    And the night passes by and you whisper to me
    A thousand lies
    I stare in surprise
    Towards the desert's warm black
    And the desert stirs
    And the desert stares back
    With a thousand eyes
    Piercing eyes, ancient eyes
    And I ask my lovers, "Do you know
    Where the desert roses bloom and grow?"
    And I ask my lovers, "Do you know
    Where the desert roses bloom and grow?"
    And I ask my lovers, "Do you know
    Where the desert roses bloom and grow?"

    This was some seriously other worldly stuff when I first heard this at 12 to 13 years old.
    Seriously, in regards to industrial, I went from NIN to Coil. And NIN sounds like sunshine pop compared to this.
    Coil and Throbbing Gristle took me to musical places I've never visited before.

    It's "fantasizing about being sodomized in Tangiers" Jhonn often said it before playing it in concert, it's even in one of the live recordings here on yt. He never mentioned Burroughs directly, but it's definitely got something of his work in it. There's nothing intollerant in what Alex Harvey wrote, sexual (and homosexual) themes are a very important part of Coil's work.

    • @Timothy2706
      @Timothy2706 6 лет назад +7

      “It’s about being sodomized in the ruins outside of Marrakesh; the ruined cities of Marrakesh. It’s a time-travel thing.”
      That's what he said about it when they played it in Belgium.

    I think that is why it's called the slur (the off key pitch of that buzzing evil instrument which I can't identify). The key word here is "evil". Combined with the angelic female vocal, it becomes very sinister.

    I love this song. Sounds like it could be on a Depeche Mode or Soft Cell album, but then some of the notes are off-pitch(i'm not a music theory expert so correct me if I'm wrong) in such a way to be inexplicably unsettling in a way that only Christopherson and Co. can accomplish.

      I think that is why it's called the slur (the off key pitch of that buzzing evil instrument which I can't identify). The key word here is "evil". Combined with the angelic female vocal, it becomes very sinister. But this is way out of the league from the ilk of DM or SC.

    I always liked coil, although I initially heard about them because I love Hellraiser so much and heard they did the alternate score. When I heard it I was oddly underwhelmed, to be honest. Then I happened upon Horse rotovator...and I couldn't help thinking 'why the hell wasn't this used in Hellraiser?' The album is great and seems to sum up the film so much better than their intended score. Maybe it would have overwhelmed the film slightly I suppose...

    • @comeflynextome94
      @comeflynextome94 Год назад +1

      Some others in the comments have theorized it's a synth-produced sound, accordion distorted heavily enough that if you heard the original recording you'd have no idea it was an accordion, or (most likely) hurdy-gurdy.

      Falco Lombardi chances are nobody but the producers would know. it's probably some contraption of their own design, or an instrument with so much distortion on it that if you heard the sound of the original it would sound nothing like this

    • @Knopre
      @Knopre 8 лет назад +9

      Hi I'd say the sound is created from an FM synthesiser, likely a Yamaha DX7 or something similar but with a shed load of delay/reverb put on top of it, hope that helps!

    Carbaret Voltaire created first REAL rhytmic Industrial and TG invented mostly noise/ambient/basics off industyrial whithout much rhytm, but not pure 100% Industrial. But Ambient-Industrial was invented by them all in a way, its to tell whith noise and ambient, its so easy to invent you know...

      I think it's really just up to you. The lyrics are so mystical that it can't be really said with utter certainty what it is about. Just listen to them and let the imagery come to you.
