The tools available today for designing like this are incredible. The learning curve is not impossible by the way you described it. Once you've got that mastered, you're horizons for future design are almost unlimited. Thank you for the very good, clear video and sound and for the time it took to do all this. I look forward to future progress videos.
Every video now is a step up from the previous one. Very detailed and informative, 'nuts and bolts' info for the kit builder. I plan to build a different aircraft kit, but the avionics and wiring info will apply directly to my project. Thanks again for taking the time to produce these great videos for your fellow kit builders. Keep them coming!
So good to see what you’re learning with this build. Nice job on the panel - looks awesome!
Those prices are really good. When I saw the 5052 option I had to smile. When I was in the service as an airframe repair tech we used 5052 a lot for non-aircraft use. Signs, boxes, pans and all sorts of other projects, including the occasional race car dash, shifter covers, etc :). It was easy to work with, bends easily without needing to worry about radius size (as you pointed out with the 6061) and cheap.
sqpapa Does 5052 age harden? I’m being lazy, but it might also be useful for others here to know.
Hey Bryan, awesome video, especially since the GRT Horizon and iPad 11 Pro are what I’m planning for my panel. All the pluses you pointed out are what drove me to that decision and seeing you actually put it in your panel gives me confidence in my choice. Thanks for all the info in this video; carbon fiber baggage and floorboards would be great. Looking forward to the next one, great job!
Great video. Awesome looking panel. So clean and efficient looking both in front and back. Thx for sharing this channel.
Awesome videos. I really like the way you have been explaining thing. It’s been fun to watch the build.
She's coming along great Bryan!!! I really liked the I pad mount
When Bryan posts a new video I click like before I even watch it as I know it’s going to be a belter..... and not disappointed again! Kitfox should put you and Trent on the payroll as I’m fairly sure you guys have sold another one..... now, just need to find a garage big enough....
Yes, I get that the so-called steam gauges should go for more reasons that a RUclips comment can contain. Yeah, I love 'em but my favorite ride was a 1950 Bellanca 14-19 Cruisemater full of WWII surplus parts. The irony is that I spent my career developing online video games including the first "MMO" Air Warrior where all manner of toil was needed to make computer screens look like WWII era instruments. And now the instruments are gone, replaced by computer screens. 😂 But I digress. Bryan, you videos keep me sane and THAT is no easy feat 😉
Also ordered my guardian mount but have not got it yet. Kit pickup in a couple of weeks. Looks like I'm going to like it. Your plane should be awesome. Thanks for another great video. Jim
Coming along nicely! Useful info on some of the interface options/requirements of GRT avionics components - and on the formability of 5052 vs 6061 Al grades. Thanks!
Nice job Bryan. I was glad to hear about sendcutsend, sounds great. I sent my panel blank, the one that comes with the kit, to a local laser cutter along with a dxf drawing and they did a fine job, but it cost me $120, quite a bit more than you paid. Thanks for the info.
Nice job. It would be nice to talk about the price comparison between Garmin, Grand Rapids, AFS, and I-Pads installs. First and second SS 7 I built was AFS. My RV 14a is going to be Garmin components. Anyway you do a great job explaining what your working on. Keep them coming. Thanks
Your video's are getting better and better. Super informative. Lots of content I can use. I'll be doing something similar. Thanks!! (I'm building kitfox 5 with 7 mods)
Great panel Bryan,I can't wait to see the Apex wired to it.
Looking good... thanks for the info on sendcutsend, putting that one in the rolladex
Great job Brian. Maybe for us non cad people you would start designing panels for us so when I order my stick grips I could order a cad design??
Ok that was great info. Already went to send cut send.
I can't remember ever seeing it talked about anywhere. But what is the cost difference between the old standard steam gauge panel, with all the separate engine instruments, radios, etc., versus this Grand Rapids panel that brings everything into one place? Thanks again for the videos!
awesome panel - great content
Planes is coming along super well.
Question,
For a non-builder like myself, what would it run to have the plane made ? Or does kitfox only send the kits?
Kitfox does make a turn key LSA starts at $96k I think.
When applying vinyl wrap use a spray bottle of water with a small amount of dawn dish soap in it spray the panel
And vinyl wrap apply and squeegee it out to remove bubbles let it dry
you can use heat to get the air bubbles out, and a small needle prick right in the middle of it, can help.
I noticed you didn’t install any backup instrumentation (pitot static instruments). I’m preparing to build my kitfox 7SS and wonder just how necessary the redundant gauges are!
The iPad has the back up of everything accept airspeed
You could bend 6061 Aluminum Alloy in the “O” condition (as opposed to the “T3” temper) to very tight bend radii without fear of cracking and then heat treat the part to the “T42“ or “T62” temper for strength.
Great video. Enjoy your content 👍
The carbon fiber looks great
Get me on the list for the carbon baggage floors etc
Thanks
Any info on the iPad software and associated hardware you're running. Great videos, just found your channel and loving it.
iPad has to be a Pro with the apple pencil and the software is the Shapr3D app. You can also use any 2d drawing path tool like correl draw or other CAD programs like Fusion and solid works on a computer.
I wish I could find someone like you who is knowledgeable to ask advice on buying a kitfox. My dream is to fly with my 4 year old son. Your videos inspire me to get a kitfox. Plus I live in the Sacramento area and hopefully I can find some flying partners.
Send me your contact info to bowenaero@yahoo.com, I would be happy to talk to you about Kitfox’s
Love your plane and all the great top notch work you are doing. I'm from the old days, and since I'm retired I watch a lot of videos such as yours on building which I always liked to do. I had a couple of questions on this video. Why do most people building now only install one radio? Are the new radios unbreakable. I learned to fly in planes with only one radio and a external speaker mounted overhead back in the late 60's, so I know it can be done. But for some reason since then, except lately, everyone used 2 radios. Now it appears to be back to one radio. No big deal. The real question I have is with the addition of the IPad along with the Horizon EFIS system, which looks fantastic. What does the IPad do that the other device can not do?
The radios now days can monitor the back up frequency, so you can listen to tower and axis at the same time, but if it fails you have no radio. The iPad is basically for Foreflight navigation, it will do just about everything the GRT will do, accept indicated airspeed.
Bryan ... what not avoid the learning curve of the wrap and go with powder coating ?
My oven is not big enough to fit the panel.
Very informative loved it!
helpful hint. if you are going to bend 6061, tell them where the bend is going to be they can lay out the design so that the bend is against the grain, and if you utilize a bend radius helper, and make your bend a bigger radius, it wont crack.. if you bend 6061 with the grain, it will crack every time.
Nice pannel very clean look.. If would super great if you could give us a total cost all in comple as seen
I will painfully add that up and put it in the next video.
Exciting stuff!
Man that is cheap.that is so worth it! Nice work though. Love your info.
What made you choose the Grand Rapids product over a G3X (if that was even a consideration in the beginning)?
I looked at both as well as the Dynon. I chose the GRT because it is lighter, has fewer peripheral boxes to mount and hook up, it is also the auto pilot control (Garmin requires an additional control box in the panel) and the map and data updates are free (Garmin requires a subscription) Over all it was a better value in my opinion. GRT has been amazing to work with. Tech support responded quickly and they are very helpful. I am very happy with the choice.
Project Kitfox I appreciate the prompt response. I thought the G3X autopilot could be operated without the use of an additional panel-mounted control (GMC307), but I must be mistaken. The free maps and data make a huge difference in overall cost over time too. Can’t argue with good customer support either. Thanks for the input!
Project Kitfox I am configuring a G3X system and am not aware of any other control box that is required.
LTVoyager I have seen most people go with the GMC 305 or 307 Auto pilot control panel with the Garmin G3 set up.
Project Kitfox Many do for convenience, but it is not required.
Hi, How do you get the exact dimensions for the panel? I wouldn't want to order it and receive something that is off and wouldn't fit or would have gaps all around. How do you get the Sharpr3D software to design the proper angles and curves of the dash before sending it off to sendcutsend?
It takes a lot of time to measure and transfer those into the program.
How much do you think that apex engine will weigh with the gear box?
175-180lbs for the entire firewall forward. With in 10lbs of the Rotax firewall forward weight.
Where is the transponder tied in? the main panel?
It will be in the tail. It’s a tail beacon X
Solid
Hello bro if I making aircraft in my home how much cost total
where are you going to put the backup steam gauges?
In the garage.
Hahaha ok you got me!
I didn't know the I pad could show all the engine info
to a complete ignoramus such as myself, WRT avionics anyway, it looks as though the radio lacks a bit of modern packaging efficiency by comparison to the other units. can't imagine why it needs to run so deep unless there's a CD player in it or something. :)
That is a standard radio tray. Current top of the line radio from Garmin. The EFIS is from GRT Avionics. There are links provided in the description.
adsb? Does the grt gps satisfy the adsb requirements
Yes and no, sorry it is a complicated one. The GRT safe fly gps is WAAS and would satisfy the gps antenna part and paired with the echoUAT it will work with any transponder. I however am using it just as a gps antenna for the GRT EFIS and then I’m going to use the Tailbeacon X which is then controlled by the EFIS. I’ll have more on that in a future video.
@@BowenAero I was considering a sandia transponder with the echouat and skyfyx which has the qualified gps and blue tooth for the Ipad. My understanding is the tailbeacon is only adsb out which leaves still the in for traffic and weather.
@@BowenAero I have an MGL set up from which I have on my two builds

Thinking about it.

Right on. I've been following your build. You really do a great job. Can wait to see it in the air.
