  • Now that all the ships, (and one land vehicle) are done, it is time for the droids starting with R2D2. Plus, the place I have been getting these kits at a discount had been out of stock for quite some time.
    Build time was 3 hours.
    Since building this kit, I have picked up the Fascinations tool Kit. I now use clippers to cut the parts off the frame/tree/spruce instead of bending them back and forth.

    legend!! Cheers for posting mate, I just bought most of the star wars series and thought I'd start with R2, was struggling just on the head! This vid is a huge help, thanks :-)

    This was my first, and probably only, kit. I gave up about 80% through and chunked it. Several pieces broke off, the legs just would not stay attached, and the body was not round enough for those round plates. Surpsingly the only that looked good was the head. Those tabs are just too small and the holes...could barely see them.

    two metal earth's in one day thanks to you. I was able to get the 3rd leg down pretty easily, but was super disappointed in my curving skills, my r2 came out much more pointed than I'd prefer. but whatever, I did it, one more to the collection. thanks for these videos, they are a real help and no one else is making them

      Not just two in one day but two Star Wars models in one day. Nice.

    Hey man , thanks for posting these videos. It helps to see someone else make a mistake so maybe I can avoid the same thing. Even though I watched your video on the tie fighter, I didnt make mine till a month later and ended up making the same mistake you did and had to buy another. Now I watch, then make. Thanks.

      Brian Sanchez I am so glad my videos help. That is exactly why I started making the Metal Earth videos. I had seen that there were some videos out them, none of the ones I saw went into any detail of the build or spoke of possible problems. Thanks for watching.

    I'm building this at the moment, lovely parts, but way too small for my eye sight. I think my days of making small part kits are over! I do find some of the tabs do not secure as well as they should, I have used glue to secure them. Regarding the head at an angle, there is two slots in line with each other for the body and head, this has to be at the front for R2's head to face forward. As mentioned not marked that well.

      +OwenGT3 My eyesight is not the best either. I use a lighted magnifying glass to work on them. Without it I would not be able.

    Hi, I am about to start collecting and building metal earth figures, videos about these are very rare on here so thanks very much for posting them. I saw in another video you bought the official tool set, would you say they are worth the expense? also what would you say is a good starter model?

    • @animateorange
      @animateorange  8 лет назад

      +leigh woollett I would definitely say the tool kit was worth it. The cutters alone make it great. I have similar cutters but they do not work as well. The needle nose pliers are extra long and the flat nose pliers are great for some parts. As far as starter models, I have mostly stuck to the Star Trek, Star Wars and Transformers kits. Looking back I would say the Millennium Falcon was an easy one. The Tie fighters are tricky because of the center part so I would initially stay away from them. As Far as Star Trek, the Klingon Vor'Cha is the easiest. The Transformers seem more complicated than the others, but with them I would start with Optimus or Soundwave. I have only done a few other kits so far. If you want to start somewhere else, look for kits that have only one sheet. Good Luck!

      +animateorange many thanks for that will definitely buy the tool kit and take all the other advise on board. Keep up the good work. Halo series next please.

    About those legs, is it found the issue? (That, on this old version of Metal Earth R2D2 with quadrangle base, legs not leveling up on base)
    Maybe somebody can explain how that happening, I had similar problem with those legs... My solution had to swap the leg ankles and all worked out. But my big disappointment to Metal Earth because then that's means that in instructions is mistake... I just thinking where is the problem, because I done all right like on instruction. But I noticed on MM website is updated instruction where leg ankles is on other sides round... But there model is updated too... My version of this problem is still that on instruction is mistake... But then that's not good, I wasted a lot of time to figure out, i couldn't believe that with such Company is made such mistake on instruction, in the middle of process, that could brake all... What you think?
    But overall about this video 👍 I like that you pointing out problematic places and show the mistakes, that very helps

    Hello Mr. AnimateOrange. I'm quiet new to this subject, so i got a little request. Do you have any good tips, building this R2D2. I bought the set as a Christmas Gift for my best friend and want to make it as best as I can. By the way, thx, for all the little tips and details you've shared with us through the video. I'm defintively going to subscribe. Oh, by the way, please excuse the, probably, bad english, I'm german and I tried my best. 😇 thank you for anything you might answer.

      Hello Maximilian. Your english is quite good. This is an older video, and I hope to someday re do this build with better tips. For one, I strongly suggest getting some flush clippers to clip the parts out. I did not do that in this video. It is something I picked up later. I also suggest getting some precision tweezers, if you can, and some round objects to help shape the part. Dowel rods, pens, drill bits, or even a step mandrels will help curve parts. A marble or medium sized bead would help in shaping the dome head. Take a look at some of my tools and tricks videos for more help if you haven't already.

    I was having great fun with this until piece 26 split into 3 bits! Have you had any problems with the metal earth parts breaking?

    • @animateorange
      @animateorange  8 лет назад +2

      +Trudi Button I have had, from time to time, parts break. The metal is a bit delicate and can not be bent back and forth too many times or it will break. Over time I have learned to slow down, and be careful with the parts and avoid bending them as much as possible.

    I think the angle of RD2D in the picture on the package is just deceiving and hes not actually looking straight because I've done 2 of them now and both mine are looking slightly to one side but if you hold it up and twist the whole thing a bit from the side it will look like hes looking straight.but once you look at him dead center you'll notice hes staring off to the left checking out some female r2d2s lol.

      I know this is a late reply but yeah Ive just done exactly the same thing but soon learnt that it was the ring that the head connects onto wasn’t aligned. I managed to undo the tabs and align it correctly and now R2 is looking the right way.

      Perhaps you should contact Fascinations through their website and tell them about your situation. I have heard they can send replacement parts.
