Lots of opportunities for volunteering for the homeless... Often shelters will approve of volunteer events by nonprofit organizations and faith groups. The best are ongoing or regular visits. Here are a few that are especially helpful for helping people feel hopeful about their lives. Often a computer lab exists but are only open for very few hours during the week, so volunteer to just be a person to man the sign in desk and supervise for basic rules, like sign in, gauge maximum time (might be for one hour if there are others waiting), or no drinks allowed. It's be nice if you can help create resumes or help learn how to navigate an online application, but just giving people the opportunity to use the computer(s) is significant alone Saturday early evening "Game nights". Take your families and friends and bring various board games and cards, popcorn and drinks. The simple interactions help counter the daily shunning that occurs by people in public spaces and helps restore a sense of having human dignity. Sponsor a creative crafts hour, again with family and friends ( bring extra people to help the kids so the parent (s) can be creative themselves too). If you have only one or two volunteers, sponsor a family night Again, light snacks and beverages help comfort people. Focus on the weekend because often staff is a reduced "skeleton crew." The most important information about what would is needed to help any person or group is to ask them what they think. Do not assume you know what is best for others
