Is maith an bean thú! So wise for teaching the past tense first. As an Irish teacher myself, I’ll put the text book away and do the same with my class. Usually, the present tense is taught first, but that’s only because it is easier (to form , but not to use) in English. When learning Irish, it’s much better to start with the Imperative mood and the Simple Past (Preterite) tense, which is very easy to form and use.
But.... there are no broad or slender vowels in Irish! It’s every consonant sound (except h), that can be broad or slender, not the vowel. The front vowel letters E or I, are (usually) written next to slender consonants, and back vowel letters, A, O or U, are (usually) written next to broad consonants, to indicate the quality of the consonant. There are a few exceptions, mainly due to historical compound words (e.g. aréir). There is also the digraph AE, when is the same sound as É, but written between two broad consonants. (E.g. gaelach). So, in truth, it’s the quality of the consonant that decides whether you need to add a suffix starting with either a back or front vowel letter to suit the consonant that you’re affixing the ending to. In practice, though, the effect is the same. The only verb I can think of that contains AE is AERÁIL. Which opens up another can of Irish worms....
Verbs ending in -ÁIL (which are almost all English words with -AIL attached) belong to the First Conjugation, like verbs with one syllable. And the slender L at the end of the verb routinely changes its quality to broad when adding a suffix. E.g. Aerálaim an seomra gach lá. (I air the room every day.) (This is also true for the many adjectives that end in -ÚIL.)

Wow, I think I'll have to watch that video multiple times to get all the exceptions in my head. I think that for the spelling and exceptions at every turn, Irish is quite like my mother tongue (French). Anyway you did a great job explaining it, bravo and thank you ^^
I have started learning French 😍 yes there are a lot of exceptions to wrap your head around BUT you don’t need to learn them all at once and some of them you might not really use but just have to recognise 👍🏻

Yes it is A LOT to take in BUT watch the video in TWO PARTS, it’s much easier that way. Once you understand the first part: the rules of the present tense THEN you should watch part 2 the exceptions to the rule 😊

I did not follow all of it but your pronunciation sounds so much better than duolingo. It is actually faster but sounding more natural I can listen longer. That is my con on early going in duolingo irish > Not enough pronunciation. They/ it expects you to read before speaking. Not good. I remember a niece who a 5 or so said two words over and over to her doll. My mother her grandmother said" that's better " when my niece closed a door . She said that's better a good 7 times. Keep on .

Love these videos 💖 but i was taught that both leathan and caol verbs can be written as -(e)ann/-(a)íonn muid. Theres no difference between leathan and caol verbs in terms of conjugating "muid". I was taught that you could say "Canann muid" the same way you can say "Briseann muid"

You can indeed! But you can also conjugate like -aimid / -imid .
I prefer not to conjugate because I find it easier to remember just the one ending (-ann/ -eann) 😊

@@Tjmce go cinnte! For years they've been teaching Irish. Its not taught a lot in English Medium primary schools but it is taught in the majority of English Medium secondary schools to varying degrees with all teaching up until the year before GCSEs (JC of NI). I completed Irish until A Level (LC Level). Tá rún agam dul go Corcaigh le céim Teangacha an Domhain a bhaint amach. Déanfaidh mé Gaeilge ansin fosta.

Coming from Armagh I am, of course, trying to learn Ulster, or as it is more commonly known down here - Donegal Irish.
Having listened to a few ‘Learn Irish’ videos there seems to be a heavy influence on the standard with a bias towards the Munster dialect e.g. the simple phrase tá mé go maith (I’m good) Dean would seem to say - a rough interpretation - ‘go mock’ where as I would be inclined to say something like ‘go moy,’
Dean seems to be a great teacher, but nowhere near as pretty as you 😎 , do you not think that different pronunciations and in some cases different words e.g. bord/tábla would throw new learners like myself who are just beginning on our journey to reclaim our language.

I think I spotted a wombat in your captions. Where you do the verb éirigh some of the text of the drinking verb is still there so instead of rising we can stay in bed with a pint! If that isn’t a wombat then I learnt something.

David M hi there, thank you for your feedback, I check every video before uploading and didn’t notice a difference in sound in this one sorry but I apologise that it wasn’t up to standard. I know the sound in my videos is not perfect most of the time but improving sound is something that I am working on with each upload. I provide these videos free of charge and work very hard on the quality of the learning material so sometimes I guess other aspects don’t get as much attention. I hope you were still able to enjoy the video nonetheless 👍🏻
