  • When the Sonna hydropower upgrade project was started in 2006, the 265 mW facility was one of the largest power projects in Norway. The upgrade involved no dam construction. Instead, a system of tunnels was built to channel the flow, including the nearly mile-long tailrace tunnel that empties 100ft below sea level into the Saudafjorden. The tailrace outflow generates massive upwellings that are exciting to experience in a small tender.

    Great - welcome back to Scandinavia - I will reserve a berth for you in Nyhavn DK in the event you have the need. Greetings /c :-)

      It's great to be back. Norway is incredible and our stop at Nyhavn was a real favorite for us. The challenge with Nyhavn is getting a spot -- it's a pretty popular location.

    looks like fun water to experience nice scenery would you mind making a video of launching and retrieving the tender

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  4 года назад +1

      That's a good suggestion. We'll plan to to do a lunch and retrieval video.

    Very cool! Heh, I see water boiling like that, means I'm somewhere I probably shouldn't be, ie below a dam as it's letting water go or something and I missed the siren.

      Probably a good caution. We love adventures and are curious but there are limits :-).
      In the past when walking on the down river side of dams, we occasionally have wondered what would happen if they opened the damn without warning.

    hey, your in my neck of the woods, see you were in Stavanger 17.07, will you be back again?

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  4 года назад +1

      No firm plans but it's a stop we like and we have fueled there in the past just prior to leaving Norway. Right now we're enjoying having no formal plans and no firm schedule and just exploring as we slowly head north. As evidence of how much there is to see in the Stavanger area, we are still only 27 nautical miles north of you :-).

    Are you going back up north this time? I'm in Trondheim and would love to meet up with you if you're close by

    • @MVDirona
      @MVDirona  4 года назад +1

      Given we have only managed to progress 27 nautical miles north of Stavanger in two weeks, we may not make it back to Trondheim but our time there in the summer of 2017 was memorable. We're only 300 nautical miles to the south so it's quite possible.

      @@MVDirona I'll be heading a bit south during next week if I get my boat ready for cruise. Hope to get to Kristiansund and Averøy to see the Atlantic Ocean road from the sea myself

    Amazing footage!
    Did the upwelling remind you somehow of Corryvreckan (you passed nearby in 2017)?
    The video released by Frank Kowalski is stunning: ruclips.net/video/wn92La1FR_c/видео.html
    Fair winds!

      Good point. There are some similarities to Corryvreckan but this is much more localized.

      We love Norway and are glad to be back. But, Scotland has some wonderful places to visit as well. For example the Outer Hebrides, Orkney Islands, the Crinan Canal, and the Caledonian Canal (including Loch Ness).
