One woman used the 30 days method. But she did it a little different. Which was brilliant. She took 30 post_it , wrote the day numbers on each (1,2,3, and so on) and she decluttered every day but not in the chronolgic row. Because when she was on day 3 and she declutter a drawer and had 12 thing to get rid of. So she used post-it from day 12. On 10 she found 25 things to declutter. So she actually used the post-it no according to what she found to declutter that specific day.
So she also had less pressure to find everyday one more and one more and so on. Brilliant and efficient !!! 🎉🎉🎉

I finally had success with decluttering by using Dana K. White's container concept. It also helped me to declutter by category (sewing stuff, clothes, office supplies , etc) rather than by room.

This really does work! Including the tea for an energy boost. I watch a bunch of videos (by the same creator, or mix-n-match because it takes a village) and get inspired to attack some unsuspecting part of my house. Gotten rid of a lot of stuff this way.

I am very surprised that Dana K White' s method didn't make your list at all! The combination of Dawn from Minimal Mom, Dana K White and learning which type of organizer you are from Clutterbug are wonderful! I found my life changed when I initially did Kon Mari, then after the first big go around, I incorporated the power team of Minimal Mom, Dana K White to keep it going and then learned my organizing style from Clutterbug to finish it out.

I'm decluttering based on dividing the house into sections. I'm cleaning and decluttering. In a month I'll go through it again. I have most of my kitchen counter space available now. Next week I'm doing my downstairs bathroom and office. The following week will be my upstairs. That's where I started. I get rid of 6-10 items daily minimally. My father in law died. He and his wife were hoarders. We filled multiple dumpsters with their stuff. We donated what we could. Sometimes you get tired of donating.

I did Kon Mari for my first big decluttering. I saw her Netflix series whilst ill in bed with flu in 2019 and when I got better, I did the whole house in four days. My husband was a bit reluctant but he did take part in some categories. It was really great.
My mother died last December and there are some really difficult choices to make. Mum was an artist and she invested in beautiful and worthwhile things. Do I keep these things? Do I sell? Give to other family members? Mum didn't leave a list of what should go to who. I now want to make sure that my children don't have the same difficult time I am having. So death cleaning is my next big decluttering adventure.

This was brilliant 😊.. you are such fun!
I found Swedish Death cleaning good for "Sentimental"... I asked myself "If I died tomorrow would I want my kids to see/read this"... if the answer was "No" eg old love letters etc which I hadn't managed to declutter before.. I read them, had a giggle and also wondered why I had held on to so many for so long, because some were really boring! Then I recycled them. I went from a box of letters to 5 letters which I moved to a scrap book.
There are several more decluttering methods which you didn't mention.. but this was a good start list!

I am on day 4 of the 30 day decluttering method .. I like it a lot so far.. I have cleared more things these past days and those items went on my day 30 as of course it will get harder to find things to get rid of by then.. I made a list and i write all the things down that i no longer need. Also i throw them in the bin right after i tell myself it no longer serves me.. If things don't serve me anymore but it feels hard to throw them out because of sentimental reasons, i take a picture of it so i still have the memory. As i have a lot of clutter it made more sense to start with this method so i get a better insight of what i actually own. Greetings from Holland xxx Juliette

Swedish Death Cleaning is my #1.
Not for other people to have to avoid cleaning after I’m gone but, so I can look at it realistically and not have to clean up after myself so hard.
I get rid of it for myself and offer things to people I know first or who trip through my life.
If they want it, “good-bye, “it”. If they don’t it goes to donation.
Now it’s their possession to get rid of by sale or they can throw it away.
This way I’m not throwing away things I spent $ on, I did as best I could to find it a home. They throw it away for me.
I used to take stuff my mother gave me because she couldn’t throw anything away either. I threw her stuff away just fine, IF I couldn’t use it.

I think the one room per week could work with some rooms (smaller rooms….ex. bathroom, laundry room) For the larger rooms or more cluttered rooms just allow more time…..2 weeks, 3 weeks, etc. I think that sticking to one room at a time could be beneficial. Just don’t move on until the one room is complete.

I have ADHD and it really helps me hyper focus on an area but not get super distracted with other rooms. I also love the container method and thinking about whether I want to manage something because I have found that is more accurate in should I keep this as opposed to how much I like something.

Great video Robin!!! Totally agree on using a combo of methods :-) I like the Marie Kondo method for clothing and accessories. Visually facing the reality that I have way more of something than I need or can ever use, was very enlightening and made it easier to let go of stuff. I feel like everyone should try to do at least a little bit of Swedish death cleaning for the sake of those you leave behind. The 30 day method is how I got started....although I don't think I ever got past day 5 before getting distracted by life. Then I would start over a few months later, lol. It ultimately helped me ease into decluttering and using other methods.

I think what's the best method maybe depends on the amount of clutter, what kind of clutter, and the personality of the person (which also might impact scale and scope of clutter). Most of the branded methods just seem strange to me, though. Maybe my situation wasn't all that bad - in no way a hoarder problem. But I had some mental blocks that discovering this whole minimalism and decluttering movement magically removed for me. I couldn't, and can't, and won't, make a bigger mess than absolutely necessary, and I prefer the method to make sense to me, rather than just have a catchy name 😛 So I started with the most obvious and annoying things, and dealt with the more difficult and sentimental items later. Now I go through this or that area whenever I notice something isn't quite right. I aim to use up and wear out what I have, whenever possible, instead of tossing it just because I don't need it right away. But I do throw out things I don't use if the reason I don't use it, is that I don't like it.
The most important part of decluttering, in my opinion, is to prevent recluttering. So I'm very cautious about bringing new stuff IN. Things should be at least as good as, preferably better than, what I already have (and plan to get rid of, which is why I'm considering the new item). I will buy in bulk of it's something I can store properly, will use up before it goes bad, not get fed up with before it's gone, and conversely, don't tend to overconsume.
Yay to everyone who got through my essay 😝

I'm interested by how high the 30 day and 10-10-10 method is. Both of those cause me to crash and burn when I have tried them because I overthink the number and just like to get things out and not have a few items sitting to be donated or whatever. Again, maybe my ADHD here but when I get over the effort of actually making myself do something, I need to do enough to make it worth it and get in a groove rather than a constant start and stop as I have to work with flow rather than against it to be productive. That being said, some brains may function more linear than mine and not have as big of an issue with task avoidance. 🙈 It is interesting to learn how different everyone's decluttering style is. 😊

I procrastinate. And what I do is I go shopping as Therapy for procrastination. Isn't that terrible. So I went to this closing out store and got 60 to 90% off on what I wanted and now I have a good excuse and I mean a. Very good excuse to get rid of stuff but I no longer want because it's too old and it's ugly and it's ripped and it's torn. old small appliances that look ugly or too many. But if you buy a nice appliance that can be used for many different things to . And can be replaced Instead of using Numerous items.
At the closing out sale I got ninety percent off on the last day. I got bed sheets and pillowcases and 2 small appliances and I got shelving where I could put everything from my cupboards onto the shelving. And make up room.
Normally I could never afford that but when you see a closing out sale. Take advantage of it and make note of what you really need.
For example there was a Nice pot and pans that were normally twelve hundred. Mart seventy percent off .
So do the math. That way you can get rid of all your old pots and pans that no longer are useful or are so old and need to be replaced.
I never buy anything anymore brand new unless it's on sale and with that big sale which started a week ago it ended
Today with 90% savings on everything remaining.
People were buying sheet sets pillow sets curtains rods.
Things that were marked from $85 down by 90%. Becas the business was going out and a new building was coming in. And I think it's the old zeller's? I'm not too sure.

I cannot throw out a container. I have a whole room of empty (useful imo) containers. Pill bottles to buckets. so, decluttering the contents rarely frees up space. IDK what my obsession with containers is. I try not to buy anything that has a resuable container because it will just go into my stash. SMH.

For me at the moment, I am doing 25 item declutter (doesn't include trash)once a week. It is manageable and out the door. But as I said "At the moment". Simetimes I need to switch up methods to keep decluttering fresh after a month or so. Thanks for suggestions.

What about one drawer at a time, then one cabinet, next one closet?

I can't do Marie Kondo. My house would be almost empty and I'd be naked 😂. I don't have a piece of clothes which would sparkle a joy.

No, I couldn't do any of these, nothing based on a certain number of items or minutes. I'm not into challenges. If I want to declutter, I want to get out what I want to get out, and chances are it's easier to pick a lot of items in the beginning. And what is an ITEM? Is the mortar&pestle 1 or 2 things? A task has to take the time it takes. And sometimes things are all over the place, and I really don't have that many rooms, or my rooms are very different, or maybe not even actual rooms - same problem manifesting itself all over, I see a pattern emerging - I actually think more in categories - so it would be better for me to take on "one category a week".

All totally valid points! Different people find different things work for them at different stages of their lives and decluttering journeys. Whatever fits fit you is what will help move you toward.

No way with Konmari or Swedish death for me. I’m going to try the container method and 1 room a week. No time for the 30 day method.

I've never really liked the spark joy method. I don't feel joy looking at inanimate objects... like how is tupperware supposed to make me happy? it serves a purpose so I'm going to keep it but it doesn't make me smile, feel happy, or excited to use it.

We need to declutter big time.. But my wife does not let go of things that can be donated... In these trying times, these so called collections ain't worth it... Welp, what can I say, their house is a big mess to begin with and they also find it hard to let go of old stuffs... They would try to sell it with a price that is un freakingly reasonable... My wife gives away stuff but very very very slowly and one by one. Like it needs to be announced or there is always an explanation for giving it up.. heck a sloth could cross the interstate highway and come back and my wife and her family would still be thinking if they would give it or keep it... I once said, the next time we have to move again, I might not be there to help you anymore....

10-10-10 sounds awful. Also don't like the 30-day challenge. I can't imagine having to count what I'm getting rid of and keeping. It would just complicate an otherwise simple process. Honestly, I think all of these methods are too restrictive. I tried the Kon-Marie method and it helped but ran into issues with practical stuff. My spatula doesn't spark joy, but I still need it. I think each of these will appeal more to certain personality types, but no matter which one you choose, you should feel free to put your own spin on it.

Don’t forget trash bag therapy! This is when you take a black trash bag and just look for garbage around your house! I learned this from Cas @ Clutterbug…brilliant, and it works! ☺️
