As someone who lives in the Philippines, I can understand why Willda was pretty shocked to see the main character of a _Filipino Anime_ not really reflecting the more native (?) physical traits of a Filipino. (Turns out the main character is Chinese apparently?) I live in Metro Manila, so I agree when she mentioned that there are fair-skinned Filipinos too (me being one of them since I too am half Chinese lol). But since this is the first of it's kind for the Filipino Anime scene, getting featured in Netflix that is (unless it's been done before), then it would have been nice to have more representation for Filipinos who have tanner skin / Morena or Moreno. Especially, considering that in the Philippines itself, there's more mixed-race Filipinos being represented in the media and the basic beauty standard is to be white or pale hahaha. I swear, buying whitening soap or glutathione is so normalized here. I saw a glimpse of this trailer and, as an anime fan, I actually did not even notice the skin color of the main character until Willda pointed it out. Probably just 'cause anime characters tend to be lighter in general. BUT, I can definitely understand if a local who was born in the Philippines, especially in the provinces, would look for more representation of their skin color from an Anime of their own country. I mean c'mon 😂 seems like a Filipino trait at this point, to put someone mixed or foreign as the protagonist. Obviously, there are times when it's not the case, but TRUST ME, it happens a lot lol. Plus I did find it a bit weird that the main character is Chinese 😂 I thought she was gonna be Filipino. I think Budjette Tan, the writer of Trese, is Filipino Chinese as well (if his surname is anything to go by). So in this case, he could have been writing it from his perspective, which explains why the main character is of Chinese descent, so I can get that. I guess we can look at it like this: the Anime trailer looks great. The illustration, the graphics, the Filipino mythical creatures -- it made me excited for Filipino mythology to be shared like this. And on Netflix too which is a big platform. Props to the people who made the animation and can't wait to see it come out. 🎉 About the skin color, I'm sure the show didn't intend for it to showcase less of the tanner natives. But it certainly would have been a great opportunity for representation, considering the cultural standards in our country. Either way, as long as the plot is good, then I'm down for it lol.
It's common for foreigners to think of Filipinos and imagine brown skin which is not always the case even if it's more common to be of a darker complexion. I'm also a light skinned full-blooded Filipino (I do have 2.3% Chinese according to 23andMe but that's too small of a percentage) and the maternal side of my family are all pretty light skinned.

Hi there! Big Trese fan here, I have all the comic issues to date and also, Alexandra Trese and I share a name!! I haven't read them recently so I'm going off of my own memory. The hologram dude? Not a hologram. EDIT: Curse my memory, I was wrong in a different way. He's a ghost. Not a hologram. I made the mistake of thinking he was a deceased witness. It's one of Alex's known powers to get a deceased person to shed light on a case by using water, her blood, candle wax, and a part of the victim(?) to call them over. They are shown to be like a holographic projection rising from the bowl the ingredients were put in. The rock like thing is called a laman lupa and works with the nuno in the comic, if I remember correctly. The thing you were unsure about that looked distinctly fishy is a shokoy which is basically a merman but like. Definitely resembles the creature from the blue lagoon more than Ariel. That lady in white you pointed out? Thats not a white lady. That is Not a white lady. OK, so about the skin tone, the thing about the comics is that everything was in black and white, except for a special edition I haven't yet gotten the opportunity to purchase due to time constraints. Trese's skin color looked a little darker there, but you have to know that richer Filipinos generally have lighter skin than poorer Filipinos, who generally have sun-browned skin. Alex has brothers, and if they turn out to be darker than she is, it'll definitely be suspect because Alex doesn't seem like the type to care about her skin color and/or whitening products, considering her role as a babaylan-mandirigma (healer-warrior). EDIT: Filipinos have SUCH a range of color man. I know two standout pale girls, one being half Pinoy and thr other being full Pinoy. The former was half American and looked pale as paper. When I saw her sister for the first time i got whiplash because I looked more similar to _her sister_ in terms of skin color!!! (We have olive brown skin) Also this comic was lovingly made by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldissimo. They even made a one-shot where they had Batman and Wolverine meet Alex and it was GLORIOUS. There's also been a couple of pieces for a new character they made that looks like a Batman from the Philippines. The comics are all in English with a couple important phrases in Tagalog, so I highly recommend reading them!!

I think the term WHITE LADY does not mean any race at all. It was just called as such because when you become a hunting and revengeful ghost, you are in a creepy light super white aura and people associate it as like wearing a white dress so to shorten it people just call it a white lady because a Filipina lady got raped and killed and now seeking justice by becoming the revengeful ghost. Just look at Sadako, a Japanese ghost creature from the Ring, we typically picture out a white lady same as Sadako. So, again don't get pet peeved by it because you think it was all about race. Thanks!
I think a trip is in order. You need to go to the Philippines. I think there is some whitewashing but lots of Filipinos are also light skinned. Historically, Filipinos are so mixed because the Chinese came to ph in the 16th century, earlier than the Spaniards. Lots of Filipino Chinese and those with Spanish origins. Also, I am light skinned because my grandma is Chinese. Filipinos who went to the states in early 30s were darker skinned so most Filipinos in the states are darker skinned. Many were farmers. I think Filipinos are like Mexicans. There are dark ones and light skinned ones.
One clue on why the MC has lighter skin is because her mother looks to be of Igorot descent judging from the houses in the show. Igorots generally have light skin not sure why because they were never conquered even by the spanish.
_the animation reminds me of blood of zeus especially the shading of the drawings though_ _And also Trese, it reminds me of Fairy Guardian Michel but it’s Filipino and much getting DARKER AND DARKER and without the female pilot and the blonde prince_

I'm a bit annoyed that she just said about how "white-washed" the show is. We're a mix of colors, more than just "tanner side". I'm a light-skinned Filipino due to the history of the peoples having migrated from different areas when the ice bridges were used to cross the waters when boats were unavailable, the Chinese bartered with us and some decided to stay here, and then we were colonized by the Spanish for centuries and occupied by the Americans for years. Beauty standards change. Morena with tribal tattoos, light-skin like certain Europeans, to returning to appreciating natural complexion. I am aware there's still a problem about that, but the standards are fickle as time goes by and not everyone is like that. I remember being teased for the way my eyes looked until the whole "Tsinita/Tsinito" craze during 2010s or something. She's speaking as someone who hasn't been around the Philippines, but she should've researched more before passing judgment.
It’s just the sad thing that the world is so focused on race and color right now and I truly believe it’s a tactic being used to divide everyone against each other. People shouldn’t be so focused on race, if at all and rather be focused on the message or story being given. You’re definitely right.
Well, let's face it, since the Philippines was invaded by Spain, America, Japan, and also have Chinese merchants for so many years long ago, the Filipino race is not a pure race anymore, and that goes with the skin color as well. Nice reaction btw.

10:04 "There are light skinned filipinos but typically theyre mixed race" No. we do have Light Skinned Pure Filipinos , not just mixed races , as a filipino in the mainland and not like you who is from the US , i have seen , met , befriended etc etc with white skin natural filipinos , of course they arent a majority , but they do exist , most common skin color is dark brown or light brown and light skin.
3:27 "Why is everyone white" Whitening Products , literally , especially filipina women , theres nothing wrong with it , white people in the west want to "Tan" in the sun and be darker skinned , why cant darker skinned people get whiter? , also not everyone is white , darker skinned filipinos are shown , also its mostly due to the Filipino/Asian Beauty Standard of white or light skin due to many reasons like Colonial Mentality and Social Cultures , but we do have dark skinned ( brown or black ) and white/light skinned natural filipinos , so we have actual white and black and brown filipinos , diverse eh?

Alex has brothers, and if they turn out to be darker than she is, it'll definitely be suspect because Alex doesn't seem like the type to care about her skin color and/or whitening products, considering her role as a babaylan-mandirigma (healer-warrior). EDIT: Filipinos have SUCH a range of color man. I know two standout pale girls, one being half Pinoy and thr other being full Pinoy. The former was half American and looked pale as paper. When I saw her sister for the first time i got whiplash because I looked more similar to _her sister_ in terms of skin color!!! (We have olive brown skin)
Also this comic was lovingly made by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldissimo.
@Jacob Gerard you are so welcome my dude. Hope you enjoy the series.
The white lady case in Balete drive is actually pretty hilarious at the start suspenseful at the middle and then Heart shattering at the end
Can I ask where you got book 4? Because looking for it online is a bloody pain. OTL
@@inklingofevil Im so sorry bro im not going to be a great help either because i got all my issues from National Bookstore, and for the most recent one I found it in Fully Booked
@@alesabelen1558 I see. OTL I only got to order book 1-3.
I saw the Tikbalang in the other monster line up, and I guess there are also diwata there too .
Thanks!
Btw, there is a channel who's a historian who reviewed the trailer. He breaks down their etymology and history.
5:58 is a Shokoy, Filipino’s version of a merman
Chokoy i believe.
No she was supposed to be on Makiling mountain.
_the animation reminds me of blood of zeus especially the shading of the drawings though_
_And also Trese, it reminds me of Fairy Guardian Michel but it’s Filipino and much getting DARKER AND DARKER and without the female pilot and the blonde prince_
THIS WAS AMAZING! We need more Filipino Animes and stories out here!
*me being pure pilipino but light skinned*
Welp guess im not pure pilipino
Don't worry, happens to everyone
Fair skin usually indicates mixed ancestry of some kind. I'm a fair-skinned Pinoy but that's because I have Spanish and Chinese blood on both sides of my family.
@@MicoB1022 maybe, my mother has igorot blood and my father is pure (bisaya)
Same.
@@MicoB1022" Fair skin usually indicates mixed ancestry of some kind. I'm a fair-skinned Pinoy but that's because I have Spanish and Chinese blood on both sides of my family. "
Keep in mind there are light skinned pinoys who arent mixed at all.
Wow, there are so many light skinned filipinos here, including me and my family and most of the people I know. Haven't you heard that the Philippines is somewhat a melting pot of peoples and culture? Many races and enthic groups had interbred with one another, the Natives, Whites, Chinese, Japanese, South East Asians, Aborigines (the Aeta people).

@@callmejam475 thx
eh! Thanks for reacting to the Trese trailer, we really appreciate it.🙏
As a supernatural detective and a bar owner Alex tend to work at night. also her Family is Chinese decent.
Wifey: why is she so pale?!
as much as we love our natural skintone, upperclass Filipino tend to be a bit less tan than those who are lessfortunate. tourist often only mingles with people who works under the sun hence they don't see the "pale" skinned who works in those highraised AC'd buildings.

If they are coming out for you, its too late for "tabi tabi po"
Take the -tres from mattress and add eh at the end. It's actually the Spanish word for thirteen.
I'm filipino and I'm pale af. I dont see the problem here
It’s honestly not a real problem. It was just fun to joke about. Looking back, we may have overdone it a little
Yeah……

People forget that the Philippines was colonized by Spain for three centuries. You don't think intermingling with the locals happened here and there?
Dont forget white chinese as well.
I’m currently working on a Zeus vs Madara Uchiha (mythology vs anime) on my channel you should react to that unlike my last one it’s gonna have actual animation
Okiedokes
Diwata are the fairies while the Dwende is the dwarf, goblin, or troll.
10:41 "She might have some blood relation going on"
Funny how you mention this , Treses mother is white while her father is brown.
I was born and raised in the Philippines and I have whiter skin than Trese 😂 granted my grandfather is Spanish and my family is of both Spanish and Chinese descent but I'm still Filipino lol. A lot of Filipinos have mixed ancestry because of our colonial history (3 centuries under Spanish rule, and the country was also occupied by the USA and Japan for the first half of the 20th century) so you'll find Filipinos as black as coal or as white as milk and all the colors in-between.
Welp in this series they went deeper than those well know mythological creatures
Maganda mga pre , legit. Mataas taste ko sa mga palabas. Nasa 8 out of 10 sya . Di lang sya normal na cliche. Lets face it. Maraming nababaduyan sa gawa ng kapwa natin pinoy, pero ito maganda. Sa una talaga hindi mo makikita na maganda sya until 3rd episode. And boom ang last episode. Suportahan ang mga pinoy artist. Subukan muna bago husgahan👍👍👍
@@synchromystic4281 Thank you.
Agreed , i disliked this video due to her Liberal western bullshit identity politics , there are black , brown and white filipinos.
@@synchromystic4281 Agreed.
So that was a fruitful breakdown and the creatures do look interesting with all their horroresque designs
Well, let's face it, since the Philippines was invaded by Spain, America, Japan, and also have Chinese merchants for so many years long ago, the Filipino race is not a pure race anymore, and that goes with the skin color as well. Nice reaction btw.
I am Filipino that was born and raised in America. Most of the Filipinos are light brown but if you have seen some Filipino movie stars on ABS CBN you would see a lot of light skinned Filipinos. They would almost look Chinese. I also heard that Filipinos are bleaching their skin to look more white. There are also Chinese Filipinos that live in the Philippines.
" I am Filipino that was born and raised in America."
So youre not from the Mainland like the "filipina" in the video , yet you talk about social issues here haha.

Wrong , there are alot of light skinned filipinos as well.
" They would almost look Chinese."
Nope , many arent chinese.
" I also heard that Filipinos are bleaching their skin to look more white."
I also heard White Americans are tanning their skin to look brown , but thats not racist? thats not colorism? thats not bad?

yes , and more.

10:04 "There are light skinned filipinos but typically theyre mixed race"
No. we do have Light Skinned Pure Filipinos , not just mixed races , as a filipino in the mainland and not like you who is from the US , i have seen , met , befriended etc etc with white skin natural filipinos , of course they arent a majority , but they do exist , most common skin color is dark brown or light brown and light skin.
heeeey iz the mithology guy!
I am getting *slight* Artemis Fowl jr vibes.
Hi love your videos
Thank you!
3:27 "Why is everyone white"
Whitening Products , literally , especially filipina women , theres nothing wrong with it , white people in the west want to "Tan" in the sun and be darker skinned , why cant darker skinned people get whiter? , also not everyone is white , darker skinned filipinos are shown , also its mostly due to the Filipino/Asian Beauty Standard of white or light skin due to many reasons like Colonial Mentality and Social Cultures , but we do have dark skinned ( brown or black ) and white/light skinned natural filipinos , so we have actual white and black and brown filipinos , diverse eh?
Is that your girlfriend???

YES, Filipinos are of various skin colors, from pale to dark brown and everything in between.
