Here's the thing: Look closely how this footage plays out, in relation to what Madonna's "climate" was like during this period of her career. This is around the time Madonna's Playboy and Penthouse magazine scandal broke out, and the slut shaming (not exactly the terminology used in 1985) was off the charts. Her second album, "Like A Virgin" has been a global hit, and she just launched the first leg of "The Virgin Tour," her very first ever. For Live Aid, she's playing in front of a U.S. crowd of over 100,000, with billions more through a live, worldwide audience via satellite exclusively through MTV and affiliate radio stations. Seeing her here, amidst a sea of a mostly white male stage crew (except for her band which, not surprisingly, is racially diverse), she is in complete control, with a razor-sharp focus and confidence in what is about to unfold in a matter of minutes. She'll all business here, not even stopping for a moment to fan out on another legendary gay icon like Bette Midler. This is what a professional looks like, and most certainly what a "star" looks like and whose skyrocketing fame was just beginning. And the live performance she does following this clip is nothing short of gutsy and astonishing given the monumental scope yet seemingly haphazard way this whole event was staged.
That '83-'85 look is my favorite too. She looked hip and fresh without all the hours in the gym and fancy dresses, all of which she did later. But that was her thing; she put on all of these different personas every few years kind of like a female Bowie.

Agreed. I'm no Madonna fan...but it looks like she's just taking care of business here before going onstage before 75,000 (...and 1 Billion on TV). Nothing wrong with that. True professional.
As a Madonna fan, I can say I came for the music and stayed for the attitude. In the 80's and 90's her music fit exactly what I loved at the time, post-disco pop, funk. She had some pretty amazing ballads too (Live to Tell). She wrote her own songs and worked with the most cutting edge producers to get the sound she wanted. But if you don't like her music, fair enough. As a woman, I loved her style and it was so refreshing to finally see a woman take full control of her career and rise to the top from her own merit and extraordinary hard work. She was never anyone's puppet. She challenged America's hypocrisy on sexism, racism and homophobia through her way of being and her music videos. For example, watch, "Madonna Nightline Interview December 3, 1990". She wasn't afraid to go into the trenches and take all the push back. Whether it was always sincere or not, who knows, but she mastered her craft and knew exactly how to get people's attention to have a decades long career. She never half-assed anything. She has made great music, music videos, and very theatrical live performances that had a message. She's just a great example of the amount of success you have in life is equal to the amount of work you put it. Many women after her have tried but haven't come close to her success.
Nicole Alessi just a shame she’s ended up how she has. Old, plastic and totally batty. We all get old sadly but she’d have been better off staying natural.
Yes, they're all their own stage managers, down to the microphone cords and the placement of the tambourine. My recollection is that LiveAid was noteworthy for being mismanaged once underway. Schedule fell apart.
This is one of my favorite footage videos of M. I know she got flack for brushing Bette off, but I didn't see it as bitchy. She was totally stressed out. Madonna was on a new pop pedestal at the time. So much of the success of this performance could make or break her future as a performer and artist. Of course, she nailed it. She always does.
Mark is totally right, one might think 'bitchy' because of her myopic-focus on the pre-concert preparations and appearing to be short at times addressing people. But consider all the factors, none of the talent was playing on THEIR OWN stage that day, it was a one-size-fits-all community layout of stage & equipment. Secondly, ALL eyes are on this concert, worldwide, so you didn't want to mess up. I'm kind of neutral on Madonna in general, BUT she overwhelmingly showed how a 'professional' performs on that historic day, period.
I believe reading that Live Aid was Madonna's first live performance in a scale like that. She was even told to use a jacket to avoid "exposure" as she was fresh from the Playboy photo scandal. I can imagine the amount of stress she had trying to make it real good. People here saying she dissed Bette Midler, not it wasnt that way. She was too concentrated, too involved for her performance.
She wasn't rude to Bette at all. She was focused on her thing, it was 5 minutes to the show, she was checking everything, making sure everything was good, like the hard working perfectionist she is. This is why Madonna is Madonna, she was involved in every single detail.

Not the people in the Soviet Union though... my parents do not even know what live Aid is or was because apparently it was not broadcasted there...
I don't thing Bette Midler expected Madonna to start chatting and I don't think Bette Midler was intending to chat. They were both about to perform on stage. It was just a quick hello before I introduce you to the world.
Agreed. I'm no Madonna fan...but it looks like she's just taking care of business here before going onstage before 75,000 (...and 1 Billion on TV). Nothing wrong with that. True professional.
Agree

Very profesional and attending details, that's was the key....
The divine miss M
Madonna looks like some stage manager here.
Yes, they're all their own stage managers, down to the microphone cords and the placement of the tambourine. My recollection is that LiveAid was noteworthy for being mismanaged once underway. Schedule fell apart.
MADONNA NOT TOO BUSY TO SAY HI TO BETT MIDDLER.. I LOVE BETT TOO!
People definitely weren't there to see Bette Midler. No wonder she got brushed off. Madonna's like out of my way minion.
@@rerrpr she didnt diss Bette, she shook her hand.
@@martinanugent5045 That is what I meant :)
