  • This is a decision that ultimately depends on your personal financial situation and financial goals. There are some general considerations that you might want to take into account when deciding whether to repay a loan or invest in mutual funds:
Interest rates: If you have a loan with a high interest rate, it may make sense to focus on paying it off first in order to reduce the amount of interest you are paying. On the other hand, if you have a loan with a relatively low interest rate, you may be able to earn a higher return by investing in mutual funds rather than paying off the loan early.
Risk tolerance: Investing in mutual funds carries some level of risk, as the value of your investment may fluctuate over time. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of taking on this risk, it may make more sense to focus on paying off your loan first.
Time horizon: If you have a long time horizon for your investment goals, you may be more willing to take on the risk of investing in mutual funds in order to potentially earn a higher return over the long term. If you have a shorter time horizon, you may be more focused on paying off your loan as quickly as possible.
Liquidity: Mutual funds are generally more liquid than loans, meaning you can sell your mutual fund shares and access the cash more easily. If you need to access cash quickly, you may want to prioritize paying off your loan.
Ultimately, the decision of whether to repay a loan or invest in mutual funds will depend on your individual circumstances and financial goals. It may be helpful to consult with a financial advisor to determine the best course of action for you.

Irrespective of the loan amount; always better to square off debt & become debt free. Apart from peace of mind; you also leave your family without any financial stress, in case of any unfortunate incident

This would actually depend on how much loan tenure is remaining.

Ideally Go for Over draft Home loan like SBI Max Gain or HSBC Home Saver and parked the surplus amount in home loan so save home loan interest on parked amount. This offers great flexibility to support any need of cash in future. Also seek opportunity to invest in Equity market / MF when market is down by shifting funds from Home loan overdraft account. When market is peaking slowly transfer the fund from MF to loan account. This cycle is not difficult to manage and needs once in a quarter monitoring. Invest in direct funds to maximize the returns.

I guess the person should partly pay off the loan to such an extent that he don't feel tensed that he has a heavy loan and then keep paying the remaining EMIs and avail tax benefit.

@@007_Sun_Tzu how much u pay for home loan? 8-9% as of now. How much you get from mutual funds? 12-15% yearly in long term.
Now it's upto you to calculate who is giving 100 rs for 70 rs..
And read my comment properly. even I didn't said to invest and not do the prepayment. Rather I said to do partial payment if the person feels the loan amount is very heavy and he is feeling tensed with a heavy loan.
And to make decision regarding this, the person should consider his risk profile along with his near future expenses and long term goals.

U can get 12 % in MF so u might make 3% extra by investing it in MF, but I think if ur remaining loan tenure is less than 3-5yrs u should increase EMI instead.
