For those who argue Mozart's music is so easy to play, and even simplistic, here's the deal: His concealed and prompting difficilty can take the word "intricasy" to unexpected levels. Great example, marvelous way to show the point.
The incredible thing is that she actually got better in this five minutes, playing the thing with more emotion and color if you compare the last attempt at the end of the video with the first one at the beginning. Vengerov, AMAZING musician and human being.
2:29 For those who think she's resisting his insight. She's not. There you see she recognizes she didn't match the idea before he even speaks. So in fact she's trying to adopt his language and has problems translating it to hers. And it's perfectly fine! This is music and probably those who don't play violin can't read the subtleties Vengerov is pointing out.
I don't think it's a matter of her resisting. Vengerov is introducing her to the art of singing, something she doesn't seem to be much aware of at this point.
@@commontater8630I agree. I finally realized if i wasn’t phrasing things the way i wanted, id practice by singing it the way i wanted and my playing would follow.
here's the thing...the great teachers don't ''kick ass'' in their masterclasses--they help forward progress. that's what makes them great teachers/musicians!
I love this!! He would tear me apart with phrasing and bow technique probably but he is a genius teacher. I never thought of Mozart this way the imagery is so good!! Thank you maestro!!! Thank you!! The cadenza is a beast as well though lol
People in the comments giving this poor young woman so much harsh criticism. I genuinely think that's just her face and she's having fun and doing her best to take his advice.
It is a stage of development or a personality type that one cannot easily change how one does something or cannot quickly change. She might need some time to assimilate it. One sees different student "pick up" of new input (and in public) in other masterclass videos. G Ire adult student
Speaking to younger viewers/novice musicians in particular here: A lot of philosophy! It is sometimes TOO much for some students, otherwise it is just the right amount for those for the students who can (and like to) think outside the box. Often: the music is not about the instrument at all.... for example, if you play the trumpet and were told you'd never get it back if you threw it away - you can imitate that trumpet sound through singing! That is what Master Vengerov's explaining here! It applies to almost any instrument! He really is a great artist/musician/teacher/philosopher! We need to see more of this and of course this is available to buy on DVD (maybe downloads now, but I bought this DVD back in 2011), and other masters like Yuri Bashmet for viola, and 'Slava Rostropovich can also be seen and learned from via DVD back in this time (circa 10 years ago).
Disagree. It's not about showing off for the teacher. If you're going to 'kill it' in a master class you have to be willing to open yourself up to the teaching, otherwise you're wasting time.
The student, in my opinion, already sounded like a professional violinist. No wonder the art of violin playing is hard to grasp. I think she was at that time one of the brightest students at the Royal Academy of Music so to be given a masterclass by Vengerov.
You can be 'professional' but lacking in musicianship: the difference lies in how well you learn to use your ears. The woman is facing a hard lesson in this master class, but hopefully she will make the most of the insight provided her by a brilliant teacher.
he is asking a lot from the student, I think she was listening and playing very well, from 3:09 you could see that she clearly understood maxim's analogy with the basketball, to wait a little before landing on the second note.
He must have been frustrated. She was a typical know it all young person who was tough to get her to break out of her classical training and playing notes. He was trying to get her to put feeling into her performance instead of playing notes in succession. Just look at his facials and body movements compared to hers. Hes a genius with violin and music and anyone who wanted to better themselves would be soooooo lucky to have him work with them. Utterly inspirational.
In the first part of the session V. uses the basketball metaphor to impart some basic phrasing. It takes her a few tries, but eventually she gets it. (BTW the metaphor is not at all 'out there': a conductor I played under for a number of years used a similar one, though he preferred tennis ball and racket to basketball and hoop!) In the second part V tries to open her up to the singing possibilities in the music but it is a hard lesson for her, because she has done too much rote playing up till now.
so many young Musicians have NO life outside of "classical" music...there is a wonderful biography of Vengerov about his growing up as a playful, little boy, and his TEACHER made sure he was a playful little boy. As an adult musician he calls on his imagination to be a better artist. This is what many young artist lack, true happiness, curiosity, and artistic daring! Vengerov is trying to help this student find her interpretation, her creativity, her way, by offering his ideas to stimulate her musicality.
marshalcraft You can't "tell" that kind of thing from a violinist if they're just making a focused face. She has alot to multitask on, she's not gonna be making clown faces for you.
I want to buy the full length DVD of this masterclass. But for some reason, I can't load the website on my PC. I'm preparing this concerto for audition in a Uni. But I have no teacher to guide me regularly on this. So I am in dire need of this class. Please help. 🙂
i like your point but. if you are someone's main teacher then yes the big points are the biggest focus. At a masterclass you have limited tools, you offer them bits that point to a bigger truth, if only partially. If you understand the inherent potential of a single phrase, then one can approach other phrases and work on them with this knowledge. You don't really need to go through much of the concerto to cover a big picture. great teacher told me gotta pick many things from one bit of info.
I like his older masterclasses but this and a couple of other recent ones I've seen are a bit painful to watch as you get the feeling the students are annoyed with the interuptions
A class or a masterclass is not a performance. Is an exchange of ideas. The student is not to accept the insight of the master, but instead try it. If she had difficulties acquiring the concept that means that she has a difficulty adopting the idea. I don't think she is resisting the idea. She only has difficulties translating his musical language and she shows that difficulty. If you find this hard to watch I think it's because maybe you're not so deep into playing an instrument?? At this level this is it. You can even work a single note or stroke. That's the job of a master. And it's perfectly fine!
As always great teaching, but I say to my students, 2 down bows at the beginning, think your opening up a great bottle of Champagne and play like it‘s an aria. I played basketball but I was really too small.
@SuperViolinplayer He wouldn't have a lot to say to Heifetz. I think it would end up as a discussion on different ideas and ways of interpreting the peice.
So why is she coming to his master class? If she wants to play it in her own way, there was no need for her to come to the masterclass. In a masterclass one has to be surrender to the master opinions, open minded, and be able to try what the master says. Later on, you should weigh which ideas from the master agree with your way of playing and incorporate them, and disregard those that you think don't contribute to much to your technique or style. Or was she trying to show him how well she plays?
'Every composer has a different colour' yeah, and so is every violinist and their violins and the various strings they use. The girl in my opinion has her own. Having said that tho, a master will always have something to say regardless.
vengerov is a great singer
Daniel Deiparine his mom was a choir master and singer
Yes, as a baritone!
😅😅😅😅😅
Whatever his vocal capabilities, he knows that singing lies at the heart of playing violin!

He explains the emotions quite perfectly, i understand how he became recognised as one of the best violinist and musician currently alive!
When Vengerov plays the world just lights up

Hi Evangeline Elias, pleased you enjoyed the clip! We'll have more Vengerov videos up soon
The Masterclass Media Foundation Yay! Anymore classes from Chumachenko and Isserlis too?!
Evangeline Elias. Yes, there will be soon.
This girl is so determined to keep her own interpretation of this piece that she almost completely dismisses his advice.
I find nothing wrong with that. Music is art and its interpretation is subjective.
@@mtv565 Well the problem is that she is there for a Vengerov Masterclass.
No, I think she was just frustrated that she was struggling to follow up the lesson.
Two different souls cannot find a mutual feeling. I want to attend normal class. I would never go to a master class.
