I remember always being amazed at how godly you were at geoguesser, but nowadays there's so many people that can identify any place in just a couple seconds. You might not be the best geoguesser player anymore, but you're still the best geoguesser content creator in my books. There's something so chill about watching your content and I love how you still play the game as it was intended to be played, rather than just studying all the meta.
True, I tried watching those pros but they are not fun to watch. They move too fast and go around (what appears to me) haphazardly. Gives me a headache.
P.S. I don't know enough about the Italian language to know whether 'Snoopy' is also used as a colloquial term there to refer to dogs in general, or whether this business is purely riffing on the comic character part alone.
03:04: "Tot ziens" ("goodbye" or "untill next time") is a message on the back of municipality signs. You are greeted farewell on leaving town. So take a few steps more, turn around and read the place name on the other side of the sign.
That Erlenau/Münsingen round was unfortunate since it didnt let you go under the under pass, because (as you correctly stated) you would have got a blue sign indicsting the town when leaving pretty soon if you went right after it. If you went left you would have found the train station. Either way, it would have saved you time I presume. Kind of crazy seeing the town my grandma lives in on a GeoWizard vid :D
while he was trying to get through the underpass I kept thinking "that's a train line! find the station!" so I'm glad to know if I was doing this one myself I wouldn't have been completely crazy
In the US and Canada, always look at the sides of the yellow school busses. They'll almost always have the name of the county or city on them. Both your New York and Alberta rounds had school busses that you missed.
And I know that there are 63 provinces, territories, and states in Canada and USA so there are a lot of license plates, but in Canada only Alberta and Quebec don't have a front plate. As soon as I saw no front plates, I knew we were in Alberta because Quebec is French.
You scrolling past the Canada post box at 20:02 and then saying "Minnesota, maybe" and "looking for clues" had me rolling! I live about an hour from Ponoka and spotted it right away - i was deffo the guy yelling at my screen as you scrolled past it on the map...good round tho
Yesterday I played maybe 7 or 8 quick rounds in the world map, and got middle of nowhere Brazil and middle of nowhere Russia just as often as I did 4 years ago. So in my experience the impossible rounds haven't become more sparse, but the recently added locations come up more often.
I'm always impressed with how quickly Tom is able to correlate a place he sees in street view to something on the map. I don't know if there's something wrong with me but I lose track of where I am on the map SO FAST... and there's no way I would be able to find a place on the map, teleport back to start, and be somehow able to figure out that location on the map as quickly as Tom does. It would take me like 10 minutes of going back and forth and trying to remember where I went and which road is which.
One good trick to use that Tom doesnt use is to orient your compass due north, then pan your camera straight down at the road, that way the road angle on your screen will line up perfectly with the map.
I'm not Canadian, but I saw that "Wild West" show with all the campers and Canadian flags out front, and I thought to myself, "That's gotta be Alberta." lol
Thought the same, again and again! Thankfully here he pointed out a few clues on how he gets this vibe. But I think we underestimate how many hours and hours and days after days he had played it without recording to get some of his Highscores. His subconscious memory is excellent too and he's learned that he can trust his instinct. Great stuff!
We're fine with having to wait for the "How not to travel" series and always happy to see the classics like this one! Just seeing you play Geoguessr is an awesome treat - even unedited! Feel free to just record yourself playing.
30:59 Can we just talk about how insane that Italy guess was. I can't believe he found the exact park out of all the hundreds of regional/national parks scattered throughout Italy.
i feel like geowizard is the best geoguessr player that doesn’t use any meta shit, like the best at feeling the vibe of a country and knowing what it is without knowing all the signposts off by heart and shit
13:00 Oriental comes from Latin and just means "where the sun rises". So it just means East. Only in America did it develop a racist connotation. Many Asians, at least in Thailand from what I know, would refer to themselves as oriental. And the whole country of Japan is also basically named after the same concept. Japan in Japanese = Nihon, meaning "origin of the sun". The name developed from a Chinese perspective, where Japan lies directly to the East. Don't let Americans educate you about racism. They have a lot of issue over there. The word is fine to use anywhere else in the world.
When you said "Gwened" almost sounds Welsh. My history/etymology/georgraphy bits of my brain did a little tingle as you zoomed in on Brittany. Loved it.
Some fun Italy tidbits: "Puzzola" means "someone/thing that farts/stinks"! At the regional park sign, if you looked in the top left it says Emilia-Romagna, although it is blurry. That is one of the 20 regions of Italy, and could have immediately limited your search to a much smaller area, although you found it fast enough anyway! What slightly confused me was the clover on the top right, as that is Lombardia's symbol, although I'm guessing this one is slightly different and is specific to some small town I've never heard of.
that was fun to watch, really love your content, how chill you are, and of course all tte puns. I have learned so much watching your videos. Been playing geoguessr for 2-3 weeks, I managed to get 24,844 on World in 20m13s this is my best score yet and I'm very very happy with it.

You should come to do a straight line across Latvia. From Rīga bay to Lithuanian border is about 60 km (45 or so miles). Mostly pleasant forests and farmland, I should think. But a few rivers, too.
I think this video works brilliantly independently of your old scores on a 'harder' map. This is the current game and we all want to see you play it and this is that! Great video
Hey. I've recently been put onto your content. Loving it, thanks. As an expat living in BC, Canada (originally from Wolverhampton and I literally got my Canadian citizenship today), I might be able to offer a little tip for the future. Odd thing about license plates in Alberta is that they don't have them on the front of the cars. Not sure if that's don't or can't but you definitely don't seem to see any cars with 'berta plates running one on the front. Also, if you can spot it through the blurry square, the letters on the license plate are red.
Tom, you are a genius. You say you will go back to one thing but your channel is going to blow up. I love the adventures. You would be welcome in my neck of the woods.
But how does the road bend in your neck of the woods? Ok, there's a river going through the woods slightly to the south, and a house a bit to the west... Ok, great. 5000 points!
Calling people oriental is generally frowned upon, however there are many business that still use it as a descriptor: primarily for furniture (rugs) and food (usually cheap-ish take out restaurants)
Always interesting when you recognize something like a gas station you've frequented and know exactly where you are; got that Ossining one immediately. If you ever get back to NY for a How Not to Travel, definitely recommend venturing up or down the Hudson Valley. You can use every method of transport you can think of: bike, car, bus, train, boat, ferry, kayak, jetski, plane, or hike. Lots to do and see along the way!
that 3rd round with Ponoka, i was laughing the whole time as i first saw that you were in Alberta because we do not have plates on the front of our vehicles, then realizing I live less than 100km away
Just adding to this from the dictionary definition: The adjective oriental, which carries strong associations with colonialism and with language that others and exoticizes, is usually considered offensive when used by non-Asian people to describe people of various Asian identities. Its use to describe elements of Asian culture sometimes has a dated feel, but is not usually regarded as offensive. I think adapting your language to be more inclusive and less offensive can feel a bit hostile coming from the demands in comments of a YT video, but I hope Tom can realize that it's not just appeasing the social justice warriors. It's also just a great way to help people feel comfortable and safe. And I do hope that Tom can make further strides to do that for the audience. I gotta say, pointing out a sign and saying "see it's not racist" is a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the people trying to get a rise out of him. He's responding to them and not the people that it will actually impact!
hey Tom, at 19:38, you could've already known it was Canada based on the speed sign, as Canada uses "Maximum" while the US uses "Speed limit". additionally, at 22:32, the bollards on the right are specific to Alberta. in hindsight, this is useless information but helpful for the future :)
I did manage a 27 minute game yesterday. But that's not at all typical for me. None of the five rounds were in rural Russia or Patagonia or Japan or... and the one round that could have taken ages had a dead giveaway sign showing the town and province (in Italy) right near the starting point.
Absolutely love the videos Tom! I've got one request tho, I don't know how others feel about this, but I find that the big Timer on the screen is a bit irritating and I don't wanna say "annoying".. but you know what I mean. If you could just size that one a bit down I think it would just be more pleasing to the Eye. Keep up the great work! I love playing along with you. Greetings from Austria!
TIP! Gaming speedrunners use "live split" to keep track of how long it takes to complete a run. You can also keep track of individual rounds while ur playing. It compares your current times against your best times. It's free and there's youtube videos on how to use if needed.
That Ossining round looked familiar right from the start, even with the weird snow coverage there, looked very N. Westchester 'Hudson Valley' is a broad regional term for all along the Hudson River so only so helpful.
just a information, the map didn't get "easier", it's just that there's a LOT of covered terrain on Google Street View while back 5/6 years ago it was obviously mostly USA, Australia, etc. as time passes a lot of countries that have coverage have a lot more streets and cities covered which results in a more diverse "World" map.
On the very first cross road, even before you checked your compass, there's a 'paddestoel' (Dutch for mushroom) on your left, which shows you the direction and (biking) distance to the nearest towns and cities. There's a lot of those in The Netherlands, especially around biking paths and in rural areas. No road numbers, though. I don't know if the resolution of Google Maps is good enough to read what they say, but if it is, they might help you in other Netherlands rounds.
What you can do for next time is look completely down at the ground and point your compass straight north. Then you get the orientation of the road you're on! So it's easier to line up the road on the map!
This is indeed how the game is supposed to be played. These videos are far superior to the meta ones. "Short antenna, red car, triangular shape pole with 5 holes, this is clearly [insert country]" Sure, the pros may be faster but they are not geography wizards at all
19:58 as soon as I spotted those signs I knew this was canada. Property guys is a pretty significant realty company here and their signs are everywhere
I don't know if World Map is any easier now than it was, but even if they have taken out some of the more impossible locations, there's so many new countries now, from India to Qatar to Rwanda... so actually, when you look at it *that* way, it's harder because there's so many more countries it could be!
The house his game starts on happens to be my fiance's late grandmother's house. They renamed that street after her to Barbara Klapkowski's Way. I guarantee my fiance was the fastest at recognizing the location than anyone here 😅
Hope you enjoy this relaxed, nostalgic video.

All this time and you finally got dropped on a road where I grew up. That feeling was so wild.
which one?
TIP! Gaming speedrunners use "live split" to keep track of how long it takes to complete a run. You can also keep track of individual rounds while ur playing. It compares your current times against your best times. It's free and there's youtube videos on how to use if needed.
For future reference, Alberta is the only Canadian province that doesn't require forward facing license plates.
Correct me if im wrong but 31:11 these arrows in the middle of the street i‘ve only seen in France so if u see them u r in France :)
That Ossining round looked familiar right from the start, even with the weird snow coverage there, looked very N. Westchester
'Hudson Valley' is a broad regional term for all along the Hudson River so only so helpful.
I saw Ossining straight away and was in agony when Tom just kept going farther north 😆
Yes! Love these old school vids. Btw on the 2nd round, yellow signs will tell you you’re in Johor
Played 4 or 5 games of the World map and got like 80% of rounds middle of nowhere. You definitely got lucky!
Perfect Friday night vid. Cheers Tom
just a information, the map didn't get "easier", it's just that there's a LOT of covered terrain on Google Street View while back 5/6 years ago it was obviously mostly USA, Australia, etc. as time passes a lot of countries that have coverage have a lot more streets and cities covered which results in a more diverse "World" map.
This is just not true. The European countries also had full coverage back then, as did many others. The parameters got tweaked.
Ossining is embedded in my brain as the suburb Don Draper lived in in Mad Men.
Love this content keep it coming!
Goodness, you had the same infuriating loading issues I had while playing. ...You made me feel better.
"We're back in civilization, oh no, USA"
11:54 Perfection
Tom with some Goat content as always
This is indeed how the game is supposed to be played. These videos are far superior to the meta ones. "Short antenna, red car, triangular shape pole with 5 holes, this is clearly [insert country]" Sure, the pros may be faster but they are not geography wizards at all
Also, can't wait for the new mission video!
Thank you for being an absolute legend
"Puzzola-ing me." Priceless
15:27 I literally was in Ossining for Christmas so cool seeing someplace you’ve been in a video
The house his game starts on happens to be my fiance's late grandmother's house. They renamed that street after her to Barbara Klapkowski's Way. I guarantee my fiance was the fastest at recognizing the location than anyone here 😅
"ooh thats a juicy sign look at that behind"
mental health and brain injury center
"shit"
Canadians gonna be mad that Thomas is still referring to Canadian provinces as states 😅😂
"I really can chill out here"
**immediately stresses about if he's recording or not**
I love these videos. Tom's comments on the side are so funny 😂😂🤣🤣
U should get married to Tom
@@nickandjessica sorry, already taken. But hey the 3rd grade called and wants it's insult back.
He's a funny guy, and you need to grow up.
