    Hi Emmy, in some Nigerian households we fry some onions, garlic and the minced turkey or beef, canned tomatoes for 5mins, add boullion cubes, fresh peppers, the canned corn, and vegetables next . Simmer for a few mins. You can eat it with rice, yam or spaghetti.

      Yeah, I think it’d benefit from a carbohydrate, as well as added flavour from onions (probably fried?) and garlic.

      That sounds great! I have leftover sweet potatoes, fresh bell peppers,canned corn, ground turkey. What kind of seasonings can l use? I don't have tomatoes but l do have a jar of marinara..

    My mum always kept a big butter container in the freezer and any time we had leftovers that weren't enough for another meal, she would dump it in the container. It was mostly vegetables, but she would also put macaroni, rice, or just about anything else that could be used in soup. Once the container was full, she would dump it in a big pot, add some canned tomatoes and browned ground beef and let it simmer for hours. The end result was an incredibly delicious soup that was just a little different every time she made it. She would make a big pan of cornbread and we would happily eat soup and cornbread for several days.

      @@shahranhussain6037 - Cooked leftovers. Whenever she cooked more than we ate, but there wasn't enough left for another meal, she put it in the container in the freezer.

      My mom did as well. Nothing was wasted when we were growing up, and I did the same while raising my three children. They all turned out budget conscious adults themselves, even when they don't have to be.😊

    As starving college students we had several glops that we just numbered. Aka '101 ways to hide hamburger. Glop1 = hamburger plus a box of mac&cheese. Glop2 = goulash. Glop3 = cream of mushroom soup +hamburger over noodles. Etc.

      they actually sell stuff called hamburger helper here which is basically a type of mac and cheese thats made to be cooked with ground beef, love these kinds of recipes though

      @@hairyballbastic8943 I tried Hamburger Helper once. It was so salty I had to throw it in the garbage. I really don't understand why they oversalt things, since you can always add more salt but you can't take it out.

    This is a poultry version of hamburger soup that we make in our family. Lots of water, stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and canned vegetables. Feeds a family of six easily, and its good with cornbread.

    I remember my grandmother making "glop" which for her was never the same recipe as it was a "clean out the fridge" dish, but it was always good. She always served it with cornbread and you are right, it was always better the next day. The funny thing is, I thought she made up the name glop to mess with my aunt. My aunt fancied herself a gourmet, and she would get so mad at my grandmother for calling a dish glop that she usually refused to eat it. I can remember her refusing the glop and eating cornbread in a glass of milk for supper...like that's not a totally southern country thing to eat! Lol...some gourmet supper right there!

      Yes, it's more realistic to have recipes like this to cook up something quickly and easily. I don't consider it "hard times" food, since it tastes pretty good. Hard times would be like those old Depression era photos of kids in raggedy clothes, with their Christmas meal being turnips, maybe with some shot squirrel or a calf's heart. With that, you really have to apply some technique to get that to be appetizing, which is less daunting today as spices are cheaper and readily available.

      The absolute best nutritional value per dollar is beef liver.
      Mix one part ground liver with two parts ground beef and add plenty of seasoning and it isn't too terrible.
      My B12 was low so I am trying to eat some more often.

    I had no idea this was a real thing! My dad always made a soup of random ingredients when I was a kid. Random chicken fat, leftovers from the fridge.. And it made this amazing soup that always tasted good and was unique to whatever leftovers were in the house. We called it glop soup.

      My pops loved salmon stew. Can of salmon, milk, butter, pepper and lots of Zesta saltines. He would eat a whole sleave of crackers.

    I made a recipe up and called it Crap. My kids loved it.
    Jiffy corn muffin mix is the base. Add chopped up ham. Saute onions and green peppers and green onions and cubes of cheddar cheese into the jiffy corn muffin mix. Add an egg and milk according to package directions.
    Bake at 350 till done
    Its a hit at our house.
    Add a salad and
    Crap is served. Lol

    This is the vegetable soup my dad used to make. He lived through the depression so I guess that’s where it came from. He always put a bullion cube in it for flavor. No chili powder.

    You can add so many other things to this as well. Personally, I'd go with a bag of macaroni. Cheap, filling, and will extend it out more if you're feeding more people. Good recipe.

    This looks very similar of what I used to make when I was living with my dad during my teenage years. Instead of using canned tomatoes I used spaghetti sauce instead. The family absolutely LOVED it every time I made it for dinner. Much like this it made a large portion but it didn't last very long because it was so good 😂

    I sometimes make a low-cost stew with spam and white beans as the base. It can also have greens and other veggies. At the end I'll drop dumplings in. It's delicious.

    Put leftover turkey, stuffing, and gravy in a pot and heat till hot. Quick and easy way to have leftover thanksgiving dinner

    I was an elementary school teacher, so I usually didn't have time for complicated dishes that took a long time to cook.
    So I LOVE dump meals!
    Quick and easy to make, and usually very tasty.
    If you were to cut up a zucchini and add it before the other veggies, then let it simmer a bit before adding the other veggies, that might work in place of the canned Italian zucchini. Especially if you add a bit of Italian seasonings to the mix, just in case the seasonings in the tomatoes aren't quite enough.

    When we went camping with Girl Scouts everybody would bring a can of soup or vegetables and we throw it all in a pot with some hamburger and macaroni and everybody would eat from it. I think it was called campers stew, it was surprisingly good.

    I probably would substitute the canned veggies with frozen mixed vegetables. Where I live, canned vegetables are expensive. And just add some bread for dipping and cleaning the bowl.

    I would make basically the same thing in college. Usually would add some tomato paste in right after meat was cooked. Also usually served with rice, but I made rice every single day.

    I make a dish similar to this except I add my Latina flavors to it like sazon, adobo and sofrito. My recipe is a cross between goulash and a Picadillo. I serve it over white rice with a side of avocado. So yummy!!!🍛🥑😋

    Wow, this is similar to something I made randomly one day years ago and became obsessed with. I use ground beef or pork, canned corn, canned tomatoes, and ketchup. No liquid is added. It's delicious!

    Its fun to read everyone's version of this recipe. Ours was called slop which was hamburger, pinto beans or baked beans, i think catsup,mustard ,brown sugar and canned tomatoes. Sometimes rice to extend the servings😃

    Looks good, Emmy. If you want some variation, you can add a box of beef broth and about 8 oz of dry pasta, and simmer covered for about 12 min, to make a nice beefy casserole.

    Mom made some thing very similar, but with hamburger meat, not ground turkey. She would use either canned or frozen vegetables, whichever she had. I think she called it something else, but we kids did sometimes call it “glop.” We thought we invented that name, but apparently not.
    I’d say use the liquid from the canned foods instead of adding water to your stew. Since most canned vegetables have some added salt, you probably won’t need to add any salt if you use the canning liquid.

    My variation would be is add a cup of elbo macaroni and let it slow simmer in the mixture, add some garlic powder too. At the end, stir in parmesan cheese, just a little. I would use the shaker kind. Maybe 1/4-1/2 cup. It wouldn't be as brothy. So many variations and I love them all.

    oh heck yeah that is a classic glop, my family loves beef so we use ground beef of course, and there is another glop that we love to make it came from my dad (i don't know where he got it from) but basically very similar yet different, We use ground beef - fresh onion -canned tomatoes- fresh bell peppers -fresh zucchini -Fresh mushrooms and really any other veg that might need to get used up and some boxes of mac n cheese, so we Saute the onions and mushrooms and then we brown up the ground beef after that we add in all the other vegetables that have been diced up with the canned tomatoes that are seasoned and let it stew up(and add salt garlic powder and ground pepper) then make your mac n cheese once that is done mix them both together and you have Hamburger Glop, super simple so fast to make and absolutely delicious (my favorite glop to make and eat ahah).

    I make my veggie beef soup like this, but regular chopped tomatoes. I also use V8 for the soup part. No hot sauce or spicy seasonings. I also chop up an onion, use garlic powder, salt, pepper, onion powder. Done

    When I was growing up (I'm in my 60's) my grandmother would make something similar to this called Cowboy's stew. It started with ground meat of your choice and chopped onion, then add, canned corn, canned beans, canned tomatoes, canned green beans and a couple of cut up potatoes. She said you added whatever spices or herbs you could find, if you had a cup of rice you could add that in instead of the potato. The veggies could also be exchanged by what was available, canned peas, okra, just whatever you could put together. It was easy to grow potatoes, zucchini, onions, tomatoes and beans, so they were all almost always added.

    I make a recipe I call "Stuff" browned ground meat, frozen mixed veggies, canned cream of mushrooms soup and half soup can milk. Season as desired. Then mix in diced boiled potatoes. Feeds a crowd cheaply and tastes good.

    I have always called this goulash. Not sure why but that is what my family called it. I now use ground beef (or pork) and ground breakfast sausage. I also like to add elbow pasta. Top it with parm. Its the best!

    Growing up in the 1970s and 80s in the San Francisco East Bay, this is very similar to what we saw at potlucks for school, but it was called "Wednesday Skillets". The main differences? Frozen mixed vegetables rather than canned and very often egg noodles were added and 2 cups of chicken stock added to before simmering to cook the noodles. Seasoning was always russian roulette because everyone did something different.
    A tip when cooking with ground turkey? After browning, add a couple of tablespoons or an entire small can of tomato paste and cook for about 5-10 minutes. It helps give the turkey a lot of depth of flavor.

      It's not the same, I cook one of those rolls of ground sausage, sometimes hot. Then add chopped cabbage, a can of "Rotel with cilantro and lime", splash of Worcestershire sauce.

    I make something similar, but I add cooked rice. You can change what veggies, meat, & seasoning that you use. You can also add a can of cream of veggie soup, or make a roux. I always add cheese too. It's cheap, filling, & can be changed to always make it new. It's good to put up in the freezer, or fridge for meal prep.

    Long ago when I lived in a house full of people, used to make something we called Pot Mess. 1lb minced beef, browned in some oil with a finely chopped large onion and a couple of cloves of garlic, then added a tin of sweetcorn, 2 or 3 hand fulls of frozen peas, a tin of chopped tomatoes then fill the tin with water to rinse out the tin, then crumble a couple of stock cubes in, usually 1 beef and 1 vegetable, once it comes up to the boil, cover a simmer for 20-30min, then depending on what we had either add a larger or 2 medium peeled cubed potatoes or a mug of washed rice not forgetting salt, pepper and a good shake of dried mixed herbs, then leave for another 30 minutes, what ever was left we would reheat the next day maybe add some curry powder to change the taste.

      After going this far my family would put the GLOP in a baking dish and top it with mashed potatoes and bake it for a bit. It would be a quick and easy shepherds pie.

    Our family was poor but our mother never made us feel it. Watching this video brought back memories of my mother making this GLOP with a side of either white rice or soap de arroz. This fed all of us and a lot of leftovers for days when my uncles didn’t drop by. ❤❤

    I make a somewhat similar recipe I learned from some friends in college. Taco soup: 1 lb ground beef, 1 onion (chopped), 2 cans of diced tomatoes, 1 can kidney beans (drained and rinsed), 1 can of corn (drained), 1 can of black olives (drained), and 1-2 packets taco seasoning to taste. Cook beef til browned, then drain the fat off. Then add the onion to the beef and cook til the onion is translucent. Then dump the rest of the ingredients in, stir, and continue cooking for ~10 minutes. You can serve it with cheese, sour cream, tortilla chips, Doritos, or anything else you like. I've also made this vegan with textured vegetable protein or another can of beans instead of the ground beef.

    We called it hamburger soup and got the recipe from carneys that came thru town with the travelling fair. My brother worked for them for a couple summers and came back with the recipe. Basically any ground meat they all chipped in to buy, then each person would buy a can of vegetables or fresh as well as pasta. Once the meat and pasta was cooked everything was dumped into the pot, including the juice from the can's of vegetables and water from the pasta, and left to simmer for a bit, fed about 30 people.

    I make something like this with hamburger, frozen 3 bell peppers and onion and taco seasoning . can add a little rice.

    Looks more like a goulash. YUM! My mom used to make chili goulash and it was so delicious! She called it "Chili Hot Dish" made with noodles, chili hot beans, chili powder, S&P, garlic, onions, hamburger, whole tomatoes (squished by your own hands) and tomato sauce. It almost was like a hamburger chili. But whatever you called it, it was SO GOOD!

    We had something pretty much the same that we called, "Stuff." (We weren't very creative.) It was ground beef & onions plus any veggies we had in the pantry and, if we were really living it up, cheese. The seasoning was probably nothing more than black pepper and garlic salt. I doubt I'd love it today, but it was a hearty cold weather meal for a struggling family of 6 in the 70s.

    I think you'd probably like corned beef hash, if you can get canned corned beef there. Whenever I've seen a US corned beef, it's looked more like pastrami, but in the UK we have a canned version that's very soft. I can't eat it anymore because swine flu messed up my taste buds, but I used to love it. Cans of corned beef, new potatoes, chopped tomatoes, baked beans, and whatever other veg you want to add, plus chopped onion.

    This is sp very similar to how my mother in law and my family as well makes our vegetable beef soup. My family usually makes it with more liquid and fresh veggies too but when times were tough or not having much time this is how they would make it. My mother in law likes using veg-all but my family would usually do individual cans of each vegetable which is my favorite way too. Pair it with a nice pone of cornbread and youve got a delicious hearty "make you feel hughed from the inside" kind of meal.

    I do this all the time. I use hamburger meat, canned corn, canned red kidney beans and mixed veggies. Depending on what's on sale or just cheaper at the time I mix it up.
    I make a basic cornbread or rice to stretch it. I season well. Then iced tea.
    I feed about 10 people daily on a pretty tight budget so this works well for me.

    I made something similar to this the other night. It was ground beef,.mixed veggies, mild Rotel tomatoes and macaroni noodles. Also cooked the beef with some chopped onion. Was really good and filling.

    I suppose my mum's version is a frozen bag of mixed veggies (corn, peas, carrots) and some kind of minced meat. Salt, pep, sugar to taste. Any carb can go with it but rice is usually the go-to to absorb the juices. Could mix the rice in directly to the pot. If you have onion or garlic, browning it first makes a big difference

    I make something similar. Sauté onions, garlic, peppers (green, red, yellow or orange). Brown the ground turkey or beef. Add peas, tomato paste or sauce , raisins, cut up hot dogs or Vienna sausage. I season with fish sauce but salt is ok too. I serve over white rice!

    Interesting. Back in Brazil my mother would sometimes make the same (with onions and everything else you used) and a can of tuna instead of turkey (and the tuna is added at the end, of course, since it's already cooked). Then we'd eat it with rice. We used fresh tomatoes instead of canned, though, since they're more affordable and just regular in Brazil. I don't think we ever bought canned tomatoes there.

Turkey used to be "party meat" in Brazil (Christmas, New Years etc) but in my family we'd rather roast a pork's leg (technically ham, but I didn't want to mix it up with the already seasoned sandwich meat as we'd just buy the raw unseasoned leg with its bone) for several hours in the oven with red wine, lots of chopped onion and spices, then add raw potatoes when it was almost done, broil the entire thing and serve for Christmas. Rice and salad are pretty common side dishes with it. Not sure if you ever tried anything like it. 🤔

    When cooking with ground turkey, I add like a half capful of "Kitchen Bouquet" browning seasoning per pound. It gives a nicer brown color than the gray color of cooked turkey, and it's got a little savory salty flavor. A little goes a long way, it's only the color we want. Dark Soy Sauce is good for this, too, but taste before you season with salt when you already have soy sauce in the dish.
    By the way, a little rice or noodles, and broth and I bet this would make an awesome hearty soup!

    *Emmy, I have a similar can opener. The next time you use it, can you check to see if turning the spinner the opposite way will pop off the lid?* Mine has the little puller too, but if I detach by just a quick reverse spin, I can lift the top right off. Lol.

    Oh my gosh, my mom used to make something so similar! But instead of Italian tomatoes, she just used the regular ones or sometimes just tomato sauce. She would crush garlic, salt, and comino seeds with a bit of water in the molcajete and add it along with some chili powder. That and some fresh flour tortillas kept everyone's tummy full and happy!

      We added beans and okra, kept the liquid from the veggies because we used tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, ground beef (if we could afford it), maybe add pasta or serve with cornbread. We called it succotash.

    Never had a recipe or a name, but I've made things similar to this for many years as a quick, relatively cheap meal. Frequently served with rice or other cooked grains to get some extra calories and bulk in for cheap.

    My grandmother who grew up in New Jersey during the depression made something similar when I was a child. Lots of tomatoes, tomato juice, and macaroni, beef, and onions. She would add cheddar cheese at the end. The only cans she used were tomato products, fresh onion, it was amazing, she called it Glop.

    growing up my mom made something she called 'mexican meatloaf' though there is nothing mexican or meatloaf-y about it. a pound of ground beef, a tin of corn, a tin of diced tomatoes, and a tin of pork n beans, a packet of taco seasoning, some tony's, and spoon that all over a handful of fritos with sour creme and tabasco. it's like frito pie but leveled up. it was a struggle meal in the past but became a comfort dish that's quick to slap together and makes a ton of leftovers. my spouse and i still eat it today; in fact i had leftovers for lunch yesterday. and it tastes a lot better than it sounds, i promise :p

    Ate that almost every day grown up. It was made with chicken, ground beef or pork. It was switched up with rice or potatoes mixed in. Mom cooked in a large pot before leaving for evening job. We’d get home from school and serve to our younger siblings and ourselves. We refilled our bowls as often as needed until satisfied.

    Oooooh it's almost like the turkey version of our pork giniling recipe - just that instead of diced tomatoes, we use tomato sauce (and paste), no corn (though that sounds delectable), different veggies; diced carrots, diced bell peppers, peas and potatoes, and no chili but meat is sauteed in garlic and onion. It can be brothy, but we usually have it more saucy though.
    Great with rice and fried saba banana planks, and the leftovers are sooo good when reheated the next day (or kept frozen for about 2 weeks and reheated, but it is nice enough that it won't last long lol).

    My grandma always made this. She used Campbell's Alphabet Soup and called it Garbage. One of my favorites!

    Yummy, had this growing up over rice. Sometimes made with ground beef, pork or dear meat. We used caned mix vegetables, onions, bell pepper and okra/tomatoes.

    One option for making anything with mincemeat (beef, pork, whatever is cheapest) is to use roughly 250g of meat and a 400g can of beans (or chickpeas or whatever, canned beans or legumes). You could use 125g of mincemeat to 1 can of beans too, but then it’ll really feel like you’re stretching the meat as far as it’ll go. You’ll also need a can of tomatoes, a couple stock cubes, salt and pepper and whatever other spices you’ve got. If you’ve got an onion and some garlic they’ll be good, too. Serve with potatoes, pasta, rice, whatever you have. This is a dish I grew up eating as a kid in Sweden.
