  • Sky News Aviation Expert Captain Byron Bailey says the London to Singapore flight which was hit by severe turbulence possibly experienced “inadvertent thunderstorm penetration”.
“I’ve flown a [Boeing] 777 hundreds of times across this very route, the area that they were passing through the Bay of Bengal is the most intense cyclogenetic area in the world with the most active thunderstorms,” he told Sky News Australia.
“When you’re travelling from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere you’ve always got to pass through the intertropical convergent zone - that line of thunderstorms, very active.”

So good for an experienced Pilot to give a version of event, I am 100% sure the Captain would have asked everyone to be seated in a brace with seat belts firmly fastened

Some journalists are now blaming Climate Change for this accident.
    Oh brother. Here we go.
How about I refuse to pay my ludicrous income, gst and land tax bills and blame it on Climate Change.
Listen the only severe turbulence I experienced is flatulence coming from the seat of my pants.

Often times the thunderstorm can be building rapidly, but is below the tilt of the very narrow RADAR beam. As the thunderstorm builds it may stay below the beam until the storm and the jet get to the same place at the same time. Lightning should have given a hint, but I wasn't there. We used to teach our pilots , especially crossing the ITCZ, to periodically tilt the RADAR down to find these errant storms.

It's advised to keep your seatbelt on all the time. Ex-hostie here, it used to amaze the number of people that rarely did what was requested.

I here you. Airline mechanic here. Seen to many banged up interiors over the years to not heed the warnings. It pisses me off how many people ignore the pax briefing before departure when I’m looking down the aisle to the flight attendants (even in the same planes that I know n work on). I even count the seat rows to the next exits in both directions when travelling. What the public don’t realise is that flying is extremely safe form of transport only because of the extreme levels of discipline in regulations that it has grown since the Wright brothers hit the air.
There is nothing safe about travelling at 38000 ft at 900 kph in air pressure that would render you unconscious in seconds and dead in a few minutes. Good aircraft design, good pilots, good mechanics, good flight attendants, good air traffic controllers and good regulation make it so safe that the oblivious public find it annoying when anything goes slightly awry.

i mean you rarely see turbulence like this, and planes are very rarely dangerous. So its pretty rare, and since its a boeing plane which have been having issues, looking into this may be important for the safety of other flyers.
