Matthew Bain is definitely a “Go To Guy” for IMPORTANT watches. You can absolutely trust him. Happily, I speak from personal experience. Many thanks for posting this great conversation !
I‘m so delighted by this interview. As a junior watch-dealer from Austria in the Nineties I went to the IWJG shows many times. Matt was one of my role models then and he still is. It is always a pleasure to meet him now and then, as he is such a great guy.
Superlative interview! Congratulations to both of you on one of the best interviews in the watch community, I couldn’t watch or listen to you guys for hours! Thank you !
To me the best episode for far, I had such a great time while learning a lot. M. Bain is so nice and humble I wish I could offer him a drink and have a chat, he totally deserves to have fans following him 😂😅
Matthew Bain... certainly one of the best! And the Top Hat story, love love top hat! Collectability should add a Top Hat collectability merchant hat! ♥
Great interview John and Matt. Even though I have known Matt for decades, it was great to learn so much from his account of his origins and highlights of his magnificent career as a collector and dealer.
nkuwan You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much
A few years ago, me being a big guy but I love smaller watches, I swore I would laugh at everyone and get the 5026 Patek series in 34mm, I never had enough money to get any. Those watches were between 8-10,000USD and now, they are sitting at the older retail prices for previous gen calatrava. Money aside, they are just so beautiful and still well valued relative to new Patek prices as well as the state of the market in general.
Hey guys, I just want to say something because of what Matthew said; The dealer culture today that has now been transparent on youtube where you see the conventions, it has put me off dealing with most people. I do not see any passion, just guys handling these items like they are commodities, which in some sense they are but they were made with thought, intent and skill. I am very disappointed with the modern dealers and their hustler approach to the whole thing, I hope one day to bring something different to the table.
@@TheDryDown I am not a pretentious guy or at least I try not to be. So, I have no issues buying watches from a trade show, what I do not like is the way some of the watches are handled, like they do not mean anything and to be honest, it's just a hustle for many and this is the aspect I hate.

Hats off to you John for the great interview! Matthew, you're an incredible source of knowledge and resource for the community. All the best!
Always a top notch visit with those who know watches. I drop what I am doing when a new podcast is announced.
Genuinely enjoyed this show and happy to put a face to the legend. Great conversation as always...Thank you!

Quite honestly, I cannot sit through 1 hour podcasts…no such issues with this one. Very interesting all the way through!!!

Oh man, when he said he’s a watch buyer but hates selling, that hit me to the core. Same, Matthew. Same.
Fantastic insight...thankyou
Stellar one John. Big fan of both of you so this was a real treat. Keep these coming!!!

It used to be a secret world, they opened the curtain for clicks and ruined any mystique the watch world had.

The Yiddish word being referred to and pronounced mazell is probably mazel tov which translates as congratulations.
Thought that was Archie!
